Surprisingly (except to Poles) pronounced VRAHTS-wahv, Wroclaw is Poland’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Viovodship of Lower Silesia. Originally (in medieval times) built across several islands, the city still has many lovely bridges and beautiful architecture. Not far from the German border in the country’s southeast, Wroclaw gets lots of German tourists, who call it Breslau. The Rynek (central square), lined by colorful buildings, is one of the city’s most popular destinations.

As of today, seven systems of shelters and tunnels belonging to the “Komplex Riese” are known to exist in the Owl Mountains. The exact purpose of these facilities remains unclear even today. They are all of a similar design, corresponding to the layout of other of Adolf Hitler's subterranean headquarters.

These beautiful buildings were right by our hotel. We learned that they had been nicknamed Hansel and Grettle - which we thought was lovely! Really gave you a glimpse of what old Wroclaw used to look like!
