5 Hiking Trails in Pretoria That You Shouldn't Miss

April 21, 2022 Yuk Petri

Pretoria is a vision of purple, thanks to its plethora of blossoming trees that gave the South African metropolis its nickname: Jacaranda City. Give in to the animal magnetism of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, then get up close and personal with the big, bad kitties of the Cheetah Research and Breeding Centre. The buildings of Pretoria reflect diverse architectural styles and influences, creating a unique urban landscape.

Buffelsdrift MTB Park offers a superb range of MTB rides for all skill levels. Trails are exceptionally well kept and maintained. All the routes prove to be scenic and some of them really challenging should you wish to be taken outside your comfort zone. The cherry on the cake for me is the fact that they went out of their way to cater for everyone. Take your young ones with you and share the fun of riding a bike in nature. Take the challenge and ride their really long trails – how about over 100km? On-site is a welcomed bike shop to rescue one with all those unexpected hiccups to get you back on the trails. A coffee shop that offers a great menu is also enjoyed by everyone. Visit their Facebook page should you need updates on the trails. When it rains for a few days, the trails might be closed. Trail running and hiking are now also open to those who prefer running shoes above riding bikes…

Don’t do the 15km trail if you doubt your fitness. The last 6km (after the split between the 15km and the 10km) is the toughest and requires grit and mental toughness to get through to the end. Very good training with a backpack if one wants to prepare for multi-day backpacking trips.

Great hiking trail. Difficult to get information on whether dogs are allowed - rules at the gate however indicate that “no body may bring domestic or wild animals into the reserve”
