Quick stop off the highway, recommend this. Short walk of 5 minutes to SPECTACULAR view of falls, gorge and lake. You could picnic here too, but if time is short, you can see the great view in less than 30 minutes.

Welcome to Amethyst Mine Panorama! Amethyst Mine Panorama is located just 60KM East of Thunder Bay Ontario, on the beautiful Lake Superior Circle Route. Handmade amethyst jewellery and souvenirs are available in the Welcome Centre. This is an all ages activity. Walking & self-guided tours are available. Reservations are not required.
We specifically came up to Thunder Bay, Ontario for the Amethyst Mine Panorama. It is a working amethyst mine and with admission, they will take you on a short tour that explains how the mine came to be and the history of it. You then get a pail and digging instrument and off you go to collect amethyst rocks. The area is separate from the mining area so it is safe, even for little ones. There is amethyst of various sizes laying all over the ground, you don’t even have to dig for it (but you can dig if you want????). You find the stones and rocks that you like, put them in the pail and when you’re done, you wash and scrub them with a brush. You decide which ones you want to keep, place them in a bag that’s provided and go back to the office. They weigh them for you and charge by the pound. It is so reasonable and that is part of what makes it so fun! They have heavier pieces already lined up for sale if you don’t want to go out into the field. There is also polished stones and jewelry. It is just north of Thunder Bay in the town of Shuniah, Ontario. It is off the highway, just follow the signs. WELL WORTH IT!
