Not all that far out of Chiang Mai is Lamphun where this magnificent temple is situated. We were particularly lucky as our visit coincided with the Lloy Krathong festival so the grounds of the temple were full of thousands of lanterns. It really was a breath taking display. It was also very busy with people buying and hanging the lanterns and , as most temples, there were many food stalls and stalls selling Buddhist mementos. Away from the various Buddhist festivals, it will be much quieter and also, therefore, much easier to park. We allowed about an hour and a half there which was ample time to see most of the temple buildings and grounds. Well worth visiting.

Wat Chamatewi aka Wat Kukut is a very old temple. The main chedi Suwan Chang Kot dates back to 1150 and seems to be the only remaining example of the architecture of the Hariphunchai kingdom. At the back of the temple compound, there is a small museum dedicated to the monk Kruba Srivichai who oversaw the restoration of the temple in 1935-36.

I hired a driver to take me to lamphun and we stopped here as the first site. According to rough guide this is the only complete example of haripunjaya architecture and there is definitely something magical about it. It also appears quite well preserved with only a bit of damage to several of the Buddha’s located in the niches. Get out of Chiang Mai for a bit and visit this site and Wat Phra That Haripunjaya.

We (7) visited the temple at 5 pm. The temple has a new main hall and an old hall. The new main hall is amazing and beautiful. The temple is midsized and well maintained. The temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand. We donated money to help the temple. We spent about one hour at the temple.
