Shah Alam Community Forest

Reviewed By kannan_pasam - Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

I wanted to write this review whilst the experience was still fresh in my mind. My wife Angie and i got up early this morning to explore and climb the hill at Shah Alam Community Forest. People who had visited this place advised that we go before it got too hot in the day as there were areas without tree cover resulting in high temperatures. This forest is relatively unknown and little has been written about it in comparison to its neighbor the Shah Alam Botanical gardens. We were glad we visited the forest. Once past about 250 meters from the entrance, one enters the forest proper. There is then good cover from the blazing sun provided by the trees and the temperature drops to a comfortable 27 - 28 degrees ; a cool breeze was blowing as we walked and this added to our comfort. This was probably the site of an old oil palm estate as we saw many old oil palm trees. The walking tract was narrow and slippery and steep in several places - certainly not a good place to visit if it had rained recently. Angie and I slipped and fell, in spite of taking precautions on our way down ; we found the support of walking sticks very useful. Surprisingly there were no mosquitoes though Angie felt that several were following and buzzing about her neck on our way down. We had taken the precaution of applying mosquito repellent before we started our hike. After about 40 minutes of walking in our senior citizen phase, we reached the summit. Though the sun was high up in the sky it was not too hot and we had beautiful views of the distant mountains and Shah Alam city. Unlike what others have written, I feel you must be physically fit to undertake this hike and it would not be suitable for young children.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife on the nature trails. Then enjoy a bird's-eye-view of the trees by crossing the Canopy Walkway. This unique conservation facility is located 20 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur.

Johnson, our guide, was very knowledgeable and interesting, explaining all about seed dispersal, plant species, rainforest ecology and the local history of the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM). The hike was great (although definitely bring mosquito repellant and wear long clothing and hiking boots for protection) and we learned a lot about the different species of trees and that the FRIM is a completely man-made rejuvenated forest of over 1,500 acres which used to be open-cut tin mines. Our favourite part of the hike was observing the "Crown Shyness" - a beautiful mosaic caused by a mysterious natural phenomenon where the leaves of the canopy layers "shy" away from each other. You need to book a guide in advance if you want this experience. We also did Batu Caves in the morning and then tagged on FRIM in the afternoon which is doable for a whole day trip.

Sungai Tua Recreational Forest

Reviewed By TetLeon - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

looking at past reviews, many mentioned that the place is dirty. this is not the case for me and I've been there a few times in the past few months. I believe the management has been better at keeping the place clean. However, we cannot expect to have very clean toilets in this sort of places, I don't believe I've been to any forest reserve parks where they have nice clean toilets. Don't let a small matter bother you in enjoying a nice day with nature :) I like everything about this place. it's near, it's big enough for every group to have their own space, you can camp, can picnic, the river is clean and beautiful. It's RM1 Per Person to Enter and I believe it's RM10 Per Tent to Camp overnight
