5 Classes & Workshops in Pembroke That You Shouldn't Miss

March 31, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

Situated near the south-west coast of Wales, the town of Pembroke is an excellent center for a holiday. A large part of the ancient town wall still exists in Pembroke, and when you walk down the main street you will see many Georgian and Tudor houses. There is a good choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs among the local shops. If Pembroke Castle inspires you, Manorbier and Carew Castles are also within easy reach. When you have had enough of history, you can relax on the superb South Pembrokeshire beaches or take a trip along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Wildlife lovers will not want to miss the picturesque Haven Waterway on the edge of Pembrokeshire National Park.

East Gate Gallery

Nestled within the walls of the historic town of Pembroke, East Gate Gallery combines a gallery, shop and pottery workshop space. Whether you’re shopping for a unique gift, looking to add to your art collection or hoping to try your hand at pottery, our little studio gallery in Pembroke is for you. It’s the culmination of more than ten years of creative experimentation by ceramicist Mena Williams.

I have thoroughly enjoyed a series of pottery workshops here myself, never having worked with ceramics before. But this time I took the leap to encourage my nine-year-old, all-action son to have a go. I didn't hold out much hope that he and his 2 equally active friends would last more than an hour in the 3 hour session, but they did! They all sat still and focused, under the patient and calm guidance of Mena who runs the workshops, for the duration (with an all-important lunch break). They each made something totally different from each other and they are so proud of what they created. Would really recommend having a go, or encouraging someone else to have a go, even if you think it may not be for you/them - you might be surprised like I was! The actual gallery/shop is lovely too, there is different stuff in there every time I go in.
