My wife and I had a wonderful time visiting this charming couple who are traditional famers living in the hills opposite Lake Biwa. We enjoyed the process of mochi-making - quite energetic wielding the huge wooden hammer to soften the rice! Watching sukiyaki being made was memorable and the results were delicious. Mistako is an excellent guide and we enjoyed the company of the Kosakas through her skilful and sensitive translation. Osaka San likes to shock his guests with the offer of some snake wine after the meal, but if you don't fancy that there are more palatable plum and quince alternatives!

Visit and experience a local village’s lifestyle and food culture where terraced rice fields, continuously cultivated for 1300 years, cascade down the mountains as far as the eye can see. First, take a stroll to visit the local shrine while surrounded by the beautiful views with Lake Biwa glimmering far below. The friendly and good-natured farming couple that hosts the mochi rice cake-making experience will welcome you wholeheartedly. They will demonstrate mochi rice cake making following the traditional method using homegrown rice. Freshly pounded with your own hands, they will taste exceptionally delicious. Also, try our farm-to-table special Sukiyaki made with fresh chicken and lots of homegrown vegetables. The farmer will show you how to make it, so participate and learn. Chicken Sukiyaki is a holiday dish in Western Shiga, especially for local festivals. Many of our guests become big fans of this salty-sweet hotpot.

My wife and I did a day-long tour of a tea farm near Uji with Keiko as our guide. It was a great day! We were able to see the tea leaves being harvested and then, later in the day, we saw them processed through many machines to make green tea leaves for consumption. Afterwards, we went to the house of a local resident and had a wonderful lunch with tea picked and processed that day and roasted by us. It was a magical experience. Everything with this tour company is first class. Keiko was a great guide for the day. We think of Japan and the tea farm every time we brew tea with the tea that we brought back with us that day.

The flexibility to chose locations that suited our wants and abilities was great. Hiro San was very quick to put together an itinerary that accommodated a family with a stroller-baby (no monkey park due to long unpacked walking paths). Taking in the beautiful temples and view of the Kyoto from the west was breath taking and the guide was able to explain many things we as new Japanese learners could not read or know through cultural knowledge. Overall a great experience, a wonderful and lively guide, and some great memories.
