Far East Russia is a world apart from the country’s west – almost literally, lying thousands of miles and many time zones away from it. A huge area with rugged mountains and spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline, Far East Russia borders China and North Korea on its south and nearly touches the United States to the northeast. Cities like Vladivostok and Khabarovsk are here, but the glorious natural wonders (like the volcanoes and national parks of the Kamchatka Peninsula) are what draw many.

My wife and i went there with a tour out of Vladivostock and it was really worth going. We were worried that we would see cramped cages, suffering animals etc but instead we saw great scientific facilities, keeping amazing animals in their natural environment, lots of happy animals that were rescued and are now kept in very good conditions. Tigers, black bears, deer, elk, boar, birds! Tour guides Rada and Sergei from Explore Primorye were very knowledgeable and spoke fluent English, we got all the interesting bits and including a very good lunch.

Unique and the only one in the Far East the Zoo of exotic animals. It is permitted to feed the animals in our zoo. The "Sadgorod" Zoo - is the unique and the only one the zoo of exotic animals in Vladivostok city. Non-State Institution the "Sadgorod" Zoo, “The Museum of Wildlife”, has been existing since 2008 and is a cultural and educating institution, which includes animals of the local fauna and exotic animals all over the Earth. The singularity of the private, not financed from the budget of the zoo is that it contains animals that need the help of people. The animals that are staying in our zoo are the orphans, deprived of parental care, retired workers of the circus, wounded by animals and birds. We do not catch the animals and birds in the forest. None of the animals of the zoo were removed from the wild specifically for captivity. But there are others, who cannot survive in the wildlife for some reason, and the zoo for them is a kind of island of salvation.

Well, as sea life places go this was certainly not run-of-the-mill. Extremely modern with use of some interesting technology. A large and very space-age building set on the beautiful Russky Island, this was commissioned by Vladimir Putin himself to be a centre of excellence in marine research, as well as a world-class visitor attraction. I took so many pictures and videos I am struggling to pick a few to put on the review. The creation of the planet at the start of the first tour was amazing. The effects were stunning. There are a large number of tanks charting the evolution of the planet and a long tunnel with aquatic life surrounding you. The divers feeding the rays and fish was hilarious. We also saw the dolphin and sea lion show. There were some impressive acts on show. All together, a thoroughly enjoyable time. Entry fee was about £20 including the dolphinarium. There are 2 cafes in the complex - you get food from one and coffee from the other. A little weird!
