Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten. The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore.

Maja and I met at 9am, and I was the only person booked for the day. I’m normally terrified of having to talk to someone for excessively long periods of time but literally I could not soak up enough information; she knew everything (it seemed!) about the history of Croatia, the Pltivice lakes and surrounding areas, about coffee and food and the best museums and why the travertine grew and why the lakes were a UNESCO site and what a UNESCO site is anyway. At one point I asked her why the trees on the highway were cut the way they were AND SHE KNEW THAT TOO. The visit was gorgeous and one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had in real life; I do believe this is the best Croatia can offer because I think it’s the best any country could hope to offer. I said wow over a hundred times. I cannot recommend this company, or Maja, enough, truly.

Budget Transfer provided a personalized, throughly planned, well thought-out six day trip. They are far more than just a "transfer" company. Dražen (as driver) and Rafaella (as guide) were with me every step of the way, answering questions and being great travel companions. :) Rafaella was knowledgeable on so many subjects: Croatian history, current life in Croatia, and she was truly a pleasant and educational personality throughout all situations. My desires were fully taken into account, and I never felt led to do what the company might benefit from (as is often the case with guided tours) - everything was fully customized to what I wished to do & see. And where I chose to leave the details up to them, they were completely handled, with ease. I requested a tour covering a lot of ground and wanted to see many cities, and that we did! We kept moving and I saw so much more than I ever could have on my own. All the tickets, ferries, and timing was perfectly planned. From my very first emails with Biljana, I was impressed with the organization and thoroughness of Budget Transfer's planning. They went above and beyond to answer all my questions. I highly recommend Budget Transfer Croatia, for any length or type of trip. They can provide just what you're looking for, whatever that may be. And, with a friendly smile and a personal touch!

A simple warm meal between breakfast and lunch is called - 'Gablec' in continental Croatia or 'Marenda' in costal Croatia, in rest of the world it's - Brunch. 'Gablec' and 'Marenda' culture is still there! So, let's taste traditional dalmatian and continental Croatian brunch together, but before that, we should mingle around and see all fresh seasonal ingredients and products at the Zagreb farmer's market (Dolac). After the brunch, we're moving forward to the boutique winery for Croatian wines sampling. So, it's all-in-one: Farmer's market visit - Tasty brunches - Boutique winery visit (wine-tasting & snacks).
Inclusions: English-speaking, food expert guide, Tour includes visit to the 'Dolac' farmer's market, 2 typical brunch dishes, Boutique winery visit / wine expert / wine-tasting & snacks, Snacks, Alcoholic Beverages
Exclusions: Gratuities, Hotel pickup, Hotel drop-off
Karmela’s tour was above and beyond just a typical food tour. She constructed the tour as if it was a menu with each stop being a new course (i.e. bakery to taste bread, meat and cheese in the market, coffee break, strukli..etc). In between each food stop there is ample time and walking to enjoy seeing major sights and historical areas of Zagreb. The breaks in between each stop also give you enough time to digest the previous food so you're hungry by the next stop! If you only have 1 day in Zagreb this is the perfect way to spend a full day tasting local cuisine and learning about the history of the city. We opted for the bonus location meeting in the bakery which started at 8 am and all in the tour lasted about 6 hours. We tasted many of the famous continental Croatian foods and wines and had great conversations with many of the local vendors we met along the way. A highlight for us was the strukli and the wine visit to Bornstein. All around it was a great day and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning about the culture of Croatia and Zagreb through food.
