I did not stay at the Saigonese home stay, but they did arrange two treks for me. I am commenting on their excellent service. Both experiences were outstanding. I am an avid and experienced trekker and mountaineer, and part of my reason for visiting Sa Pa was to climb some of the region's notable peaks (e.g., Fansipan, Pu Ta Leng, Bach Moc Luong Tu). I decided to hire a local guide for these treks because I didn't want to hunt around for obscure trailheads, and I wanted to support the local economy during the pandemic-related economic downturn. I ran into two problems with this: 1) Besides Fansipan, there is very little actual mountain hiking in the area. Most of the trekking is centered on villages and rice paddies close to the city center (with the exception of the fantastic trekking tours offered by Ethos). Even on Fansipan, the vast amount of traffic on the mountain is via the cable car. Therefore, it's difficult to find someone to arrange mountain guides for anything besides Fansipan (and even trekking Fansipan is considered something of a specialty these days since the cable car went in). 2) Nearly none of the local tour operators I contacted had any knowledge of mountain peaks besides Fansipan. One of them, VietTrekking, had a very nice website with information about the more obscure mountains. When I contacted them, however, they said they didn't have any guides available to do the treks. Another company told me that they didn't have any English-speaking guides available (even though I told them that was not a requirement) and refused to help further. Saigonese solved both of these problems for me. They were able to arrange a local guide up Fansipan (which is required, no matter what anyone tells you) for a one-day climb. Then, a week later, Saigonese was able to arrange a guide to take me on a three-day push to the peak of Bach Moc Luong Tu. This was also excellent. This was no pampered trek: the trek was challenging, beautiful, and dirty. Exactly what I was looking for. And in both cases, my guides were people from local hill tribes. I was happy to keep my money in these communities that are frequently overlooked. Saigonese did something that other companies in Sa Pa couldn't or wouldn't do: they arranged guides for mountain treks that were inconvenient and out-of-the-way. I will definitely be back to Sa Pa, and I will use Saigonese again. I recommend you use them, too.
