10 Walking Tours in Nuremberg That You Shouldn't Miss

December 11, 2021 Yuk Petri

With half a million people, Nuremberg is Bavaria's second largest city. While its history dates to the 11th century, Nuremberg is most often linked to the 20th century (specifically World War II). It first served as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies, then was nearly leveled by Allied bombing, then was the site of the famous post-war Nuremberg Trials. The city has much to offer today's visitors, including the rebuilt Nuremberg Castle and the world-famous gingerbread at Hauptmarkt. Hansel and Gretel would have loved this place.

On March 22, 1933, a few weeks after Adolf Hitler had been appointed Reich Chancellor, a concentration camp for political prisoners was set up in Dachau. In the twelve years of its existence over 200. 000 persons from all over Europe were imprisoned here and in the numerous subsidary camps. 41. 500 were murdered. Still to this day, in the southeast corner of Nuremberg, the remains of structures located on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds impress visitors with their immense proportions and stand as vivid testimony to the megalomania of the National Socialist regime. Adolf Dassler (known as "Adi") began producing his own sports shoes in the kitchen of his mother's house in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria after his return from World War I. In 1927. During the 1936 Summer Olympics, Adi Dassler headed from Bavaria to the Olympic Village to convince African-American sprinter Jesse Owens to wear his shoes. Owens was the first African American athlete to be sponsored by the Dassler brothers. When the sprinter was awarded four gold medals, success confirmed the reputation of Dassler shoes among the most famous sportsmen in the world, piquing the interest of coaches from various national teams.

My husband and I were spending a day in Munich before flying on to Norway and Iceland in February. We decided to take a tour of Dachau, but our plane would arrive in Munich too late for any of the group tours to the camp. We chose to do an afternoon private tour with Nuremberg Tours. We had flown overnight to Munich and knew we would be up most of the night and the day we were in Munich and having to deal with an early flight out the next morning. We were staying at a hotel close to the airport, but we were to meet our guide at the train station in the city center. This was quite a distance from the city center and the best way to get there was by train. We asked Jason if we could meet our guide back at the train station at the airport because we were unfamiliar with the train system there and would already be very tired. Despite the fact that he had to go well out of his way, Jason, the owner of the tour company, agreed to be our tour guide and meet us at the airport for the afternoon private tour. He was a history major, so knew so much about the city and the concentration camp. He allowed us to take our time, answered our many questions, and gave us a sobering, but memorable visit to pay our homage to all those that suffered there. I highly recommend Jason’s tour company. If you are lucky enough to get him as your guide, I am sure you will walk away from any of the tours he offers feeling like you have a greater insight into the history of the area.
