The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep, and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary. Therefore this route is better suited for more adventurous folks or those with some high altitude, hiking, or backpacking experience. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau. Here, many of Kilimanjaro’s routes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before Summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route. offers Machame as a seven-day group climb or as a six-day private climb. The six-day variation combines days four and five, going from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp without staying at Karanga.

The porters and guides were lovely people who are all amazing at what they do, would highly recommend them! Also did a safari with them and the guides were highly knowledgeable and very kind.

Amazing bucket list vacation with an amazing company. We went on an 6 day safari with guide Chris. Saw every animal, stayed in great accommodations, ate wonderful food and had the time of our lives. Could not recommend Kilisa's safari more. Following our safari, we embarked upon a Kilimanjaro trek along the 7 day Lemosho route with guides Rama and Bacari and crew. Everyone was so FRIENDLY and catered to our every need (lots of needs at 15k+ feet). We successfully summited and don't think we would have without the Kilisa team looking after us. Unforgettable trip that really lifted our spirits after no traveling due to global pandemic. Everyone in Tanzania is kind, warm and welcoming. The team at Kilisa is no exception. Please consider Kilisa and guides Chris, Rama and Bacari on your safari and trek!

Kilimanjaro Machame route is highly recommended for high altitude acclimatization gain. It is the route of choice for many people making it the most popular route because it provides impressive views and a variety of habitats. It is also one of the cheaper routes due to its easy access and shorter itinerary. The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb but it does not require technical skills where first time trekkers use the route as well and do fine, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accomodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while camping and sleeping in tents.

I had the pleasure of flying with Tupo Travel as our tour operator. It was truly spectacular; the Kilimanjaro views were breathtaking. Our pilot was very knowledgeable and gave us details and the formation about the mountain as we went around flying, he gave a good commentary of what we were seeing, and the ride was comfortable. Mary's genuine enthusiasm was contagious, and everyone we met was friendly and was happy to see us. I was nervous about flying in a helicopter, but I had nothing to worry about with my friends around. Our flight over and around Kilimanjaro was one of the highlights of our trip. I could tell that the pilot was very experienced, the take-off and landing was smooth and the flight itself very relaxing. We had a great time. One of the best ways to see Mount Kilimanjaro and the neighboring national parks. I highly recommend this Tupo Travel Audrey and Friends

Safari in Tanzania is one of the things you must do in life. It’s such a mind-blowing experience. Imagine seeing all kind of animals living in harmony, having their own world. Imagine getting so close to a lion and have a face to face moment. I was so lucky to meet Gea and take the decision of going on a safari with his tour. Everything was amazing according to the budget which was half the price everywhere else. The campsite was clean, staff were hospitable and the food was good. The driver was patient and keen to show us everything. I was really impressed with the African show and music at night- was such a surprise. I really recommend Moana tours because the owner is a genuine person who cares about making people happy not rip them off, which is not the case with most of safari tours.

The Chemka Hot Springs are an oasis in the hinterland of the Kilimanjaro region, situated 40 kilometres from Moshi. But also for day-trippers, they are an ideal destination. Whether it’s the old, the young, the quiet or the active, the Chemka Hot Springs invite you to linger, swim and explore. The pond is very deep, in some places up to 10 meters, but the water is so clear that you can see the bottom well all the time.

Excellent service is the only way I can describe the Serengeti Camping Safari team, right from the beginning communication with Anita was far helpful and detailed. She provided me with all the answers I needed without getting tired or complaining, the team made me feel right at home when I arrived at the airport. I did a 5 days safari with the best driver/guide (Lucus) who is so knowledgeable about animals and birds he made me and rest of the group know more about different animals behavior and most of it all he was so funny, and he thought us some Swahili words like 'mambo, poa, vipi musela yangu and many more. My stay in Tanzania was a memorable one, thanks to Serengeti Camping Safari.

I was impressed with Kili Peak from the day I contacted them enquiring about a private safari, they answered all our questions and together we created a great trip schedule. They are very transparent and made us comfortable about paying upfront. The trip with Markarot was an awesome experience, he was patient, caring and most importantly very a very experienced guide. He knew his way around the parks we visited – Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro. We manage to see lions, elephants, gazelles, cheetah, warthog, rhino, giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas and many birds. We had comfort on the road and luxury at stopovers all thanks to Kili Peak.

Nestled on the mountain slopes of Kilimanjaro lies the beautiful coffee village of Materuni. Produce your own cup of coffee from tree to cup. Receive first hand secrets of what makes a good cup of coffee from the local Chagga people. Only a small hike from the village lay the homonymous 80m high Materuni waterfalls. This very impressive Waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal clear glacier water 70m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall is located 2500m above sea level It traverses through valleys and hills covered by tropical rainforest, past coffee, banana and avocado farms. On a clear day great views of Kibo and Moshi town can be seen. The hike to the base of the Waterfall can be demanding and hiking boots are recommended. The tranquility and peace of Lake Chaka seem a thousand lifetimes away from the bustle of Moshi town, but it’s actually only an hour’s drive away, so perfect for a day trip with a difference. Lake Chala is a caldera lake fed by clean, cold underground streams from Kilimanjaro itself, and it’s renowned for its gloriously changing colours; from deepest turquoise to emerald green to azure and all colours in between. It’s a perfect place to relax and unwind and you’ve the choice of hiking the picture-perfect countryside around the lake, swimming in its sparkling waters (don’t forget your cozzie!) or kayaking across the border to Kenya. Or all three! It’s a day full of getting up close and personal to one of the greatest (and quietest) treasures of Tanzania.
