This compact Scottish city is perfect for exploration by foot — travelers can easily find their way from the lovely River Ness to historic Inverness Castle and St. Andrews Cathedral, and beyond to the events at Eden Court and the busy Victorian Market. It’s also an ideal base for exploring the Highlands, with the mysterious Loch Ness (and famed local resident Nessie), Culloden Battlefield and the Bronze Age Clava Cairns just a quick drive away.

Take a walk with Cath, a local to the area, and an experienced Scottish Tourist Guide Association Green Badge Guide around her beautiful City of Inverness. Each tour is bespoke and planned around the opening times of various venues of historical interest and importance. A Walk Inverness tour contains lots of local history, beautiful scenery, architecture, and romantic (yet sometimes bloody) tales which have over time, shaped Inverness into the thriving city that stands today. In the true spirit of Outlander, find out more about the short but final confrontation of the Jacobite Rising, The Battle of Culloden in 1746, in which the fate of between 1500 Jacobites was sealed by a poor decision and a hostile terrain. Cath will fascinate you with references to Outlander along with life in 18th century Inverness right up to the present day. Sharing stories of clan history, folklore and legends. Step even further back in time to 565 AD and learn about St Columba’s visit to the Highlands.

I’ve been hiking with Citymountaineering for 4 years now and it’s always been a pleasure. I love only having to show up and the rest is already taken care of. This scrambling weekend started with a smooth train journey, then short transport by minibus to the camp site where the tents were already pitched (thank you Stuart!). In glorious weather we scrambled up a gully on Saturday and a ridge on Sunday and did some lovely hiking with great views in addition to that. Stuart made sure we were always safe and we could opt for a rope, even if it was just for peace of mind. A very small and friendly group and always enough time to ask questions about hiking, nature, surroundings or anything else really. Thank you for a brilliant weekend! See you on one the Little Western Islands Expedition trip next.

We had a brilliant time visiting Eilean Donan castle and the Isle of Skye. We were a small party due to Covid 19 and everything was well thought out to ensure social distancing, hand sanitising etc. Chris our driver/guide was friendly and extremely knowledgeable with lots of stories thrown in too. It was a long and thoroughly enjoyable day and we would love to return one day.

Me and a couple of friends choose the Brambling Bus to go around Callander for a day. It was amazing, perfect road trip with a nice playlist. Sara is an amazing driver and Maciek loves history so be ready to know some good facts to bring home with you! They took us to Callander, we had a nice walk by the Bracklinn Falls and then headed back to town to grab some food at a nice local bakery (delicious homemade pies). We also stopped by a couple of their favorites spots (like the huge antique shop). It was an amazing day, I highly recommend traveling with them. They are lovely and enthusiastic people who love sharing their love and knowledge about Scotland. Thanks Maciek and Sara!
Kilts, bagpipes, Gaelic, clans and hot Jacobites (I'm looking at you, Jamie Fraser) - so many of our Scottish stereotypes come from the Highlands. Inverness has always been the capital of the Highlands, the gateway between the Highland and Lowland communities. Yet Inverness has a complicated relationship with its Highland heritage. On this tour, you will delve into that relationship through ancient legends, invented traditions and a battle about a cheese. This audio tour takes you on a 3km walk around the highlights of the town. It takes an hour without stopping but you can pause the tour whenever you choose. The audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smart phone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.
Inclusions: Lifetime access to Inverness: Gateway to the Highlands tour, VoiceMap Application, Offline access to audio, maps, and geodata
Exclusions: Smartphone, Transportation, Food/Drink, Tickets or entrance fees to any museums or other attractions en route
The Highlands is the epitome of Scotland. Big skies, sparkling countryside, great food, friendly people and the Scottish Highlands. A natural playground that begs to be explored, with the finest and most romantic castles. Edinburgh is the inspiring capital of Scotland where hundreds of years of history unite an unforgettable world-class city. The magnificent architecture of the city is shifting from the enclosures of the medieval Old City to the grace of the new Georgian City. Above all, Edinburgh Castle stands with its magnificent splendour. Edinburgh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a compact and lively town but home to the world's largest arts festival. Glasgow is true heaven with excellent food, drinks and unforgettable experiences as well. The lush and beautiful land is full of green areas, evergreen forestry of the Highlands with their sweeping mountains and deep “lochs”, and its compact wildlands, the islands with lots of beautiful beaches and vast views. Oh, what views!
