Atmospheric backstreets paint a very different picture to first impressions of Abu Dhabi. The often slick and modern capital of the U.A.E. presents a fascinating mixture of tradition and progression. Tracing its rich history back to around 3000 B.C., Abu Dhabi maintains a more distinctly Arabian ambiance than glitzy Dubai. Taxis are a safe, reliable way to get around sites such as The Corniche Park, the White Fort, the Heritage Village, which offers glimpses into Bedouin life, and the Women's Craft Centre.

As soon as we decided to visit UAE, I knew that a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi would be at the top of my list. I excitedly booked this tour (unfortunately without giving any consideration to double checking the covid quaratine rules). The next day, Nick reached out to me via iMessage and phone. He explained the quarantine rules (10 days in Dubai if not vaccinated or 5 days in Dubai if vaccinated - regardless of PCR test results) and offered to help me reschedule my tour date to accommodate the guidelines. We unfortunately had to cancel this trip due to these guidelines, but I appreciate Nick's professionalism and courtesy to inform me of the rules and help me find a suitable alternative. I hope to return in the future to go on this tour!

Communication prior to our meeting in the lobby of our hotel was good. Arrangements were clear and Houda was punctual with her brother as our driver. (His driving was cautious and gentle in a very clean and comfortable vehicle.) Houda is very affable and pleasant, talkative and engaging. We arrived a bit too early so we’re given an impromptu tour of Sports City, which pleased us and our teenage children. Once at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, it was clear that Houda and her brother had done this before. They walked ahead and acted as our liaison with all of the Mosque staff, transitioning us quickly and efficiently through security. Houda is knowledgeable about most aspects of the Mosque and was able to answer almost all of our questions completely, always encouraging us and the kids to ask any questions we had. The location itself is breathtaking and I strongly encourage anyone who has an appreciation for art and architecture or who has an interest in learning about different cultures and religious history and backgrounds take this tour. I won’t describe the things we were privileged to see, as a simple internet search will yield plenty of photos, but suffice to say the place is spectacular. The walking tour is mostly indoors in comfortable, air conditioned spaces, but there is a bit of outside time, so if you’re sensitive to heat, go in the morning, take water and sunscreen, or be sure to visit during the more comfortable months of October through March. Though self-guided tours are allowed (we did that last year by ourselves), I highly recommend a guided tour, as staff and security on site are not allowed to answer questions or act as tour guides. It was great during our second visit to have such a pleasant and knowledgeable guide to whom we could speak and direct our questions. I don’t know how many languages she speaks, but Houda’s Arabic-accented English was very easy to understand and she was a delight to be around.

We live very close to Emirates Palace and had been very excited about staying and experiencing for ourselves a stay in ‘one of the best hotels in the world’ we expected luxury and pampering, we were sadly disappointed. On arrival there was no one to greet us or help us out of the car, my husband who had a bad back, had to lift our case out and carry it into the hotel, no one to even open the door for us. Check in was fine, a nice chap showed us to our room, we had a sea view room which was OK but average for good hotels in Abu Dhabi and not as special as some we have stayed in, the carpet was faded and marked. On opening the wardrobes the light blew, we informed reception and expected it to be fixed, it was not. We asked for more shower gel, that did not arrive. After going to the pool which was nice but only the children’s pool is open and that is too shallow to swim in, we got back to find very nice cakes and chocolates in our room which was nice. However we asked for ice and that never arrived. We had a lovely ( if expensive) meal in Hakaasan and a very good breakfast with a real treat of meeting the falcon the next morning. We had a late checkout at 4pm arranged so headed for the pool after asking for fresh towels to be left so we could shower before leaving at 4pm. We returned to our room at 315 to shower and we were APPALLED. Our belongings had been moved, next to our crumpled bed a CHILDS COT had been left-newly made up- we presume ready for the next occupant?????? Baby bath and child’s slippers were in amongst our belongings in the bathroom and wardrobe. These could have been covered in COVID for the next occupants. Our dirty towels were still in a pile and moved to the floor, dry ones had been left in a heap on the bath. We complained to reception when we left, we received no call, email or apology. We called a few days later to complain again and have still received no reply/apology. In these COVID TIMES THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. You are supposed to be a luxury 7* hotel and we were very very disappointed. Your staff were all lovely but have obviously not been trained properly. We would eat again in the restaurants there but would not recommend anyone waste their money to stay there. We wondered if VIP guests are treated this way????
