Sapelo Island is truly a one of a kind place and the Visitor's Center put one in the frame of mind to truly enjoy the island if you are fortunate enough to visit it or simply learn about the island's history which is amazing. We Airbnb'd on the Island and used the Visitor's Center to familiarize ourselves with the history of the island and what to expect. Two books will take you back in time to the Island's unique history: "Goin' D'Iland" by Mike Sellers and "God, Dr. Buzzard & the Bolito Man" by Cornelia Walker Bailey are must reads and both available at the Visitor's Center. If you're fortunate enough to go to the Island don't pass up the chance and be prepared to immerse yourself in a time long past.

Excellent first stop on our recent visit to Savannah. Lots of helpful maps and people, a small gift shop and clean restrooms. Convenient parking lot and also near a parking garage if you want to park under cover - also a stop for the CAT free trolley is nearby as well as some other, paid, trolley tours of Savannah. There is a small snack stand also in the building. The building itself is worth a look, beautiful and impressive inside and out!

Whether it's your first time to Georgia's Golden Isles or your fifteenth time, our many information agents are here to assist you at the Golden Isles Welcome Center on St. Simons Island.
This welcome center was our first stop upon arriving at St. Simons. We arrived at 4:15 p.m. and they close at 5 p.m. The lady that was working there was very nice and knowledgeable about the area. Plenty of brochures are available for attractions, historical visits, restaurants and surrounding places such as Jekyll and Sapelo Islands and Savannah. There is a small gift shop area within the welcome center if you wish to purchase merchandise. There are no restrooms in the welcome center. You will need to walk across the street to the brick library building to access restroom facilities. Our visit was during an uptick of Corona virus cases in Glynn County. Many people, including staff, were wearing masks and hand sanitizer was available.

After being cooped up for three months, we were ready to get out of Dodge. We decided on St. Simon's Island because it is a comfortable three-hour drive from Hilton Head Island and because of the many historic sightseeing opportunities. Our first stop was the Golden Isles Welcome Center. I had researched the top attractions on the island; the center was a wonderful resource for brochures and maps on the top attractions we wanted to see. Laurie spent time with us answering questions and suggesting additional places for us to visit. The center has a nice gift shop with souvenirs and books about the area. We are especially interested in Eugenia Price, a St. Simon's historical novelist; her books are available at the center. One of the many attractions we were interested in were the "Tree Spirits," seven faces/images carved into trees. It is a scavenger hunt of sorts; clues lead you to find them on the island. The very first tree spirit is clearly marked in the welcome center parking lot. It is not to be missed. She is dedicated to the loggerhead turtles. The welcome center is strategically located within easy walking distance of the famed SSI Pier, Lighthouse Museum, and public pool. Restrooms are located directly across the street in the Postell Market, home to the SSI library. We scored some free books from a cart just outside of the library.

The helpful staff answered questions we had about the confusing toll to get on to Jekyll. A nice 2-story tower allows a view of the marsh.

See the famous park bench and box of chocolates. Not just a rest area! A great learning/travelling tool. Great displays. Plus the set with Forest Gump (Tom Hanks) complete with the famous park bench and box of chocolates. A great respite for travelers or just a clean pit stop for those in a hurry. This sets the bar high for other states promoting tourism.
