There is something really special about this area. We had been once before, and years later took our two young boys, 3 and 5. We spent days just enjoying the surroundings. Collected rocks in Eagle River along Superior, had ice cream on the porch of the little store there, explored rock piles and forests. Learned about copper mining in Calumet and poked around at the old equipment. Everything was just so peaceful. The sky seems so expansive and the clouds so big. Next summer we have another list of things to see in the area, but I am mainly looking forward to just being there.

Located in the historic Union Building, the Calumet Visitor Center serves as the free visitor center for the Keweenaw National Historic Park and interprets the history of the copper rush of the 1840’s and the resulting boom that ultimately created more than ten times the wealth of the more famous California gold rush. The center offers three floors of interactive exhibits that describe the often-difficult life of the miners and their families from the boom times and till the end, marked by the 1968 closing of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company, an interesting park film, bookstore, and an information desk with helpful rangers that can provide information on the many sites and features dispersed throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Build in 1901 and a National Historic Landmark, we are proud to be the oldest continually operating Carnegie Library in the state of Michigan. The library houses a unique collection of books and newspapers documenting the area's history and works closely with the local genealogical and historical societies to preserve our past by archiving information of historic value.
