The Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy some peace, quiet and natural beauty. Except perhaps in the summer, when the Isle of Wight Festival draws visitors from all over the world. In 1970, the Festival was the largest rock-music event ever held. It was called Britain's Woodstock and featured Jimi Hendrix and The Who. (Not so much peace or quiet that week.) The island is also known for its world-famous sailing and lovely resorts, where people have been vacationing since Victorian times.

Hovertravel provides the fastest Isle of Wight ferry service across the Solent and is the world's longest running and only commercial hovercraft operator in Europe. Our passenger ferry service takes you directly to the shore at Southsea or Ryde in just 10 minutes. Easy onward travel connections are available with our Hoverbus to Portsmouth, bus and train connections at Ryde.
Brilliant hover service and only a 10 minute journey to the island . The crossing was a bit choppy but we got there safe and sound , the return journey was smoother due to better weather conditions.

During a few days break as foot passengers the bus service was excellent. The Rover ticket for 48 hours enabled two of us to travel the Island all day with access to all bus routes!! Good value and reliable.

You have got to travel this line ASAP, it’s due to close soon. Even if you aren’t a transport enthusiast you’ll be fascinated by this miniature British Rail line. Traveling for just over 8 miles from Ryde to Shanklin in 1938 former London underground trains its cheaper and better than the roller coaster at a theme park. The main service is 2 trains an hour but check the times before you travel, it may be off on weekend for engineering work.

We were staying in a Guest House in West Cowes and found this essential and easy for our intended trip to Osborne House in East Cowes.

The iconic Island Line is the fastest way to get between Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin and uses the oldest trains on the national rail network, 1938 ex London Underground ones. The current ones have only a few months left - the last run will be very early in January 2021 so visit and take a trip very soon! The ride is indeed a bit of a rollercoaster, especially around Brading and Sandown. Here's a tip - it's less bumpy if you're in the back coach. If you're in the front of the front coach, hold on. The trains and the line are a real experience - the line goes through some lovely countryside and the trip on Ryde Pier itself is like nothing else on Britain's railways. The line also connects with the brilliant Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Smallbrook Junction and is just five minutes walk from the also brilliant Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum (get out at Ryde St John's Road station) From April next year, newer ex London Underground trains will enter service. Much trackwork is being done (including adding a new passing loop at Brading station) and it'll be interesting to see how much smoother the ride is then.
