High in the cool hills, this colonial gem of cobblestone streets and picturesque churches inspires artists with its color, character and light. Baroque, neoclassical and neogothic mix in the city's buildings, notably at the pink stone 18th-century church on the Plaza Principal. Founded in 1542, the city is a mix of Hispanic and Mesoamerican influences.

We had an amazing walking (with one taxi) food tour with Diego! My husband and I love exploring the local food culture and he took us to some great local markets we never would have been able to navigate on our own. We tried tacos, meats, fruits and other treats. At the places he picked he knew the owners. Diego even brought his own plates and silverware for us. He is really knowledgeable about the history of the food culture of San Miguel De Allende. He also went with us to the local craft market. All in all a great day!

Vail, our guide was terrific. We learned a lot about the history of San Miguel, and enjoyed all the restaurants we visited. Highlights were the shrimp and jicama tacos and the churros. I have some mobility problems due to a total knee replacement I had a few months ago, and she changed the itinerary to accommodate me. They even picked us up at our hotel and brought us back! My husband and I were the only ones on the tour, so they went out of their way to customize the experience. One piece of advice: go hungry!

Jacobo is an excellent travel guide and driver who provided impeccable service picking us up from Lyons airport and driving to San Miguel. We ended up hiring him to drive us from San Miguel to Guanajuato, doing some sightseeing on the way. He was very attentive, on time and communicated very well about all the details of the trip. Would highly recommend his services if you’re planning to visit this area.

This trip is an amazing way to get out in nature. The terrain was beautiful, the cowboys were fun and helpful, and the dinner and breakfast were delicious. I watched a beautiful sunset, the full moon rising, and the sun coming over the mountains while my coffee was being prepared in the morning. And there are s'mores around the campfire!!

Walking and discovering San Miguel led by a native guide of the town, with 23 years of experience and with a SECTUR certification, will make your visit a pleasant and informative tour, discovering from reliable sources the history, customs and traditions of this charming city.

We were disappointed in this tour, inasmuch as many of the places that were on the itinerary -- two museums and the national theater -- were closed. And they've been closed for a long time due to Covid. Our tour guide said, "we'll need to cut the tour short"...we suggested we visit a winery on the way back, but this came from us not him. The guide himself was knowledgeable about the history of the location, which is why this isn't a 2-star, but the owner, Jesus, should either have not booked us on the tour at all or at least informed us that after a one-hour+ drive many of the destinations would be unavailable.

It is an experience that mixes tourism and art throughout San Miguel de Allende where we meet artists in their own workshops where they do painting, sculpture, textile art, Mexican folk art and more styles. The artists receive us and tell us about their creative processes (techniques, inspiration, etc.) while we have a glass of wine and eat tapas, the tour can be personalized and private or in a group.
Inclusions: wine and tapas included, Private transportation
Exclusions: Gratuities
This was a great tour I would definitely recommend it if you are an art lover/collector visiting San Miguel de Allende. We were on a short trip over new year to this fabulous place, Arturo agreed to take us out on New Year’s Eve to visit four different artists. He collected us from our hotel and drove us out into several areas of the city to meet 2 painters and 2 sculptors in their homes or studios. Just visiting these different areas which you wouldn’t normally have access to was an experience in it self. Arturo spoke good English and gave us a background history into art in the city and of the artists we were meeting. I own an art gallery based in the UK and was really surprised how strong all four of these artists were. They had all spent years developing their own practice, techniques and it was fascinating hearing each artists talk about what inspired their work. We did purchase a couple of pieces and could easily have bought from any of the artists we visited. We will definitely be visiting some other of Arturo’s artist/galleries when we return to SMA.

Rancho Xotolar is a working ranch that has been in the Morin Ruiz family for over four generations. We are located in the high plateau 18 km from the center of SMA in a rural and pristine environment untouched by modernization. Our land is situated adjoining the newly opened archaeological site of Cañada de la Virgen, a pre-Columbian construction of pyramids and other architectural structures of the central basin of the Laja river that is attributed to tolteca-chichimecas groups of central Mexico. Here our guests can experience the true cultural life that is Mexico. You will enjoy the wide open spaces, not like a tourist, but as a member of the Morín Family. You will ride through spectacular countryside with breathtaking views and stunning landscapes guided by Thomás and Felix Morín who will share their vast knowledge and skills while keeping your safety in mind. After your ride, enjoy an authentic ranch “comida” of delicious, freshly prepared specialties along with a cold “cerveza”.

Alberto Aveleyra has been doing research on the site since 2017, when he presented a paper about the prehispánic routes of access to the site in the 3rd International Congress of Ethnohistory. This year, 2021, an article where he shows his first research results is going to appear in a book about the Royal Road of Guanajuato. His research proposes that this site probably is the sanctuary of Chicomoztoc, a place referred in multiple indigenous historical sources, this discovery drove him to start a PhD in Mesoamerican studies in the National University of Mexico, he is now in the selection process, if he is succesful, he´ll start his degree in August 2021. The last 4 years of fieldwork and codex analysis have been founded through the tours he runs in the site. When you hire his tours you are contributing and supporting his research, creating a new way to do cultural anthropology in Mexico.
