Lucerne is an ancient town with strikingly modern sensibilities. One of Europe’s oldest covered bridges serves as its centerpiece, and fresco-adorned historic houses line the streets, but it’s also home to the cutting-edge KKL, a concert hall and art gallery. Take the cableways up the Pilatus, Stanserhorn or Rigi mountains for breathtaking views, or see Lake Lucerne on a steamship cruise.

The evening walking tour provided by Ralf the Nightwatchman is fascinating and a unique way to discover parts of Lucerne that you may not otherwise visit. Ralf conducts the tour in medieval dress and recounts life as it was in medieval times. He has lots of interesting stories and projects images on walls to elaborate his stories. I would highly recommend this unique tour to anyone visiting Lucerne.

Mount Pilatus is a mountain massiv with several peaks, overlooking Lucerne. The top can be reached with the Pilatus Railway, the world's steepest cogwheel railway, from Alpnachstad, operating from May to November (depending on snow conditions) and the whole year with the aerial panorama gondolas and aerial cableways from Kriens. The classical "Golden Round Trip" involves taking the lake boat from Luzern across to Alpnachstad, going up by the coghwheel railway and returning down on the aerial cableways and panorama gondolas to Kriens, from where the bus takes you back to Luzern. Our tourguide accompanies you on this tour from the starting point, shows you the changing landscape and answers your questions about the country and its people. The tour guide knows the way and shows you a few places away from the tourist flow.
Inclusions: all taxes, fees and handling charges, local tourguide operated by Swiss Travel Guide for your party only, all transportation fees for boat, coghwheel railway, gondola and bus
Exclusions: food and drinks, personal expenses during the tour
The boat to cog railway to mountain was fine. A good alternative to the hiking we had been doing, and the mountain is lovely as long as you expect to be in a resort area at the top. You can get away from the crowd by walking a bit, which we did and it was very rewarding. Our guide was decent, nice fellow, and spoke excellent English. He gave us some tidbits on the boat re: mountain and local culture but he also didn’t know the answer to some of our questions and was not much help about where to eat in Lucerne or what else to do.

Visiting Lucerne’s landmark mountain, Mt. Pilatus, is a must-do when you're in the Lake Lucerne region. Start at the valley station in Kriens, and enjoy a 30-minute gondola ride over a pre-Alpine landscape to reach Fräkmüntegg, where you'll transfer to the aerial cableway known as the 'Dragon Ride.' After another five minutes, arrive at 7,000 feet above sea level (2,132 meters). Soak up the panoramic views over the lake and Alps, and then take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down through rock faces, mountain streams, and lush meadows to reach Alpnachstad (from beginning or middle May till November 14th 2021, otherwise the panoramic cable car is operating). This is a no guided tour and it's why that there is no meeting point.
Inclusions: Cable car ride (except during maintenance), Cogwheel train ride (from mid May to November 14th 2021), All taxes, fees, and handling charges
Exclusions: The listed price does not include a CHF 5 parking fee (per day), Food and drinks, Hotel pickup and drop-off
Absolutely stunning scenery and fantastic way to check out Mt Pilatus with a family. The cable car was exciting and view up at the top was breathtaking. We were lucky enough to have some snow, although the train was unfortunately closed on the way down :( Still, we could not fault this experience as the day was sunny and wind-free! Directions were easy to follow and reviews helped us to make the decision and find the bus stop. The company we booked with also returned a portion of the tickets, given the train was closed! How amazing is that!

During a short stay in Zurich we took a two hour city tour with headphone commentary (due to the virus there we no tour guides available). For us, at two hours the tour was just about the right length and the commentary was interesting and informative with a narrative that extended to both the city and national relevance. A word about the driver - he was friendly and just about the best bus/ coach driver I have ever experienced. He navigated the often narrow streets and turnings superbly and was courteous to other drivers and pedestrians. Whilst we thought this was quite an expensive tour, (most things in Zurich are quite expensive), we did very much enjoy it and would certainly recommend it.....
