The absolute best Onsen I have ever been to. I highly recommend a stay here. The hot springs are so soothing, and there is a variety of baths to choose from. The food can’t be beat, I truly enjoyed the multi course traditional meals. The staff goes above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. A big thanks to Shoya! He made my stay extra fun. Wanted to see some proper snow after being deprived of it for a couple years in Tokyo, and certainly got my fix here. Town and countryside were a magical white on arrival, and had some steady snow falls during my 1-week stay. Also easy access to the local ski-fields at nearby Shiga Kogen and Ryuo. Hotel is a 10 min walk uphill from station, which is terminus for a convenient connecting express train from Nagano bullet train. Friendly, professional hotel staff. Nice town/mountain views from lobby/lounge. Delicious kaiseki-style breakfast. Two types of baths - large public bath downstairs, and open air private bath on the roof (great for watching the sunset), and they even have gaijin-sized yukata owns! Nice town/mountain views from lobby/lounge. Good base for exploring nearby shrines/temples around Yudanaka and historic Shibu Onsen. Of course the visit to the snow monkeys is a highlight, not to mention the amazing hill-side hike to get there! Great late-winter escape.

We stayed here 2 nights to see the snow monkeys and visit Obuse. It was our first Japanese Ryokan so it was quite an experience. After struggling up from the station through the snow with our luggage we were told that we were too early to check in, so had to leave our bags and wander off for some lunch. When we returned we were greeted with green tea and then taken up to our room. There was a step inside the room where you need to take your shoes off, but unfortunately my friend didn't see this, tripped over it and fell headlong. The little lady showing us in seemed more concerned about the need to take shoes off than checking that my friend was actually OK. Inside it was a classic Japanese room with tatami mats, a low table with chairs without legs, a little balcony type area with chairs with legs and a bathroom where the toilet and bath/shower were separated off with their own doors. While we were at dinner the table and chairs were moved aside for futons to be set up on the floor. The ladies on reception were very helpful. They provided us with a map of the hotel showing the location of the restaurant and the baths and they booked us a taxi for the morning so that we could make an early start for the monkey park. When we arrived at the restaurant for dinner we were shown to our own little room with a table and chairs (with legs) with sliding doors where the staff would arrive with all the different courses for dinner. The were aware that I didn't eat meat, so tailored food arrived for me. They really made an effort to explain the courses to us and in some cases to explain how long we needed to leave things on a burner. It was all quite an experience and breakfast was similar, which we hadn't really been prepared for and meant we headed off to find some English tea and coffee afterwards. However, we felt it was a worthwhile experience.

The snow filled landscape was so beautiful facing the river. Was glad to be able to travel before all the covid lock down. Private onsen on balcony was very relaxing and private dining was fun and delicious. Dressing in a Yukata for dinner and breakfast was different, most of the Japanese people also wore them. Roof top bar at night in a plastic igloo covered in snow was unique. They also shuttle you too and from the station and up to the snow monkey park. All staff were excellent and the lady owner came to speak to us several times.

Offering a free-use reservable hot-spring bath, shared indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, and traditional multi-course dinners with Shinshu beef, Shibu Hotel is 8 minutes from Yudanaka Train Station on the free shuttle. The traditional rooms have Japanese-style futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor. Yukata robes, green tea and floor-cushion seating allow you to experience Japan's unique culture. More universal facilities include air conditioning, a mini-fridge and a TV. Each room has a private toilet, and guests bathe at the hot-spring baths. Snow Monkey Park is a 25-minute trip (10-minute drive + 15-minute walk) from the hotel, and the Nakayama Shinpei Memorial Museum is a 20-minute drive. Zenkoji Temple is a 1-hour drive. On-site parking is free. When not luxuriating in the hot-spring baths, you can check out the gift shop. Free Wi-Fi is provided at the lobby. The set-menu Japanese breakfast and dinner are served at the dining room. You must check in by 18:00 to eat dinner at the property. Guests who check in after this time may not be served dinner, and no refund will be given.
Spent 8 days here recently, skiing at nearby Shiga Kogen. Simply the best hotel we've stayed at in our many trips to this wonderful country. Not because its facilities are super luxurious - they're not but they are very comfortable - but rather because of the delightful, ever accommodating, ever helpful owners and staff. I recommend this hotel, without reservation.

The rooms were very clean and our expectations concerning a traditional ryokan were fulfilled. The staff was very welcoming and friendly even though COVID 19 rules are a challenge to everyone these days. The staff was professional at all time and we would stay there again if we manage to come again... The breakfast we booked was traditional Japanese style and we enjoyed it. If you want to see the Snow Monkeys or the vicinity stay at Tawaraya!

1st. floor ---- reception, robby , table tennis, free wi-fi, natural hot springs 2nd. and 3rd. floor ---- guests rooms free car parking
Hotel staff picked us up from the train station, a very convenient service. Free kitchen for use, spotlessly clean with most utensils you would need. Self service laundry also available. There was a nice restaurant cum lounge area for guests to mingle, with games, tv and free coffee!! A Small Onsen was nice and quiet. Rooms were Ryokan style, very clean, very comfortable. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Breakfast was a simple set meal as well. Everything was lovely. Hotel Kiyomizu Bozansou was an amazing and memorable stay for me particularly due to a combination of their exceptional staff service (very helpful and friendly people!) coupled with the coziness and spaciousness of the entire place. Very personalised service as well since there weren’t many people around. Would 10000% stay again.
