10 Top-Rated Ranches in Tasmania

May 1, 2023 Velvet Champine

Off Australia’s South Coast you’ll find the rugged and beautiful island of Tasmania — a unique destination where you can see Tasmanian devils, walk in the wilderness, take in stunning eco-cruises, taste artisanal cheeses and even explore a controversial art museum. The best way to see it? Take the back roads, but allow plenty of time: A short drive in any direction can lead to wineries, distilleries, marine farms, convict settlements, pristine beaches, fields of lavender and national parks…

Superb stay, the best accommodation for my Tasmania trip

The location was easy to find, instructions were provided clearly in the booking confirmation email. Farm tour was value for money, Jane makes great scones, raspberry jam and Billy was super friendly. Sophie was knowledgeable and shared with us lots of information regarding the farm. Room was superb, heating available which is super essential for this Winter especially. We stayed at Boobook and we could see the sheeps right outside our cabin. One word - Superb!

Very disappointed

We were booked into lavender cottage for two nights however on arrival were given the wattle cottage, very rundown and tired looking with a poorly designed kitchen. The windows were wide open allowing dust and small critters particularly ants, and a spider found it’s way into my clothes that were placed on the shelf which needed wiping down first. The breakfast, for which we paid extra, was only provided after asking for it, and then it was just a very scanty cornflakes, bread and juice, which had to last us the two days. Perhaps COVID-19 was used as an excuse not to provide shampoo and conditioner - and considering COVID-19, I would have thought single serve coffee and sugar sticks should be provided instead of the jars of coffee and sugar, already contaminated by the coffee. A selection of teas would have been nice, along with some small packs of biscuits which even basic motels provide. We were given instructions to disinfect surfaces prior to leaving as well as disposing of our rubbish with the excuse given as a safety measure with COVID-19. I cannot understand why the cleaner is not adequately instructed and provided with gloves and suitable cleaning equipment. It’s quite remarkable that guests are required to clean, particularly after paying such a premium price for a very ordinary product. Our following two nights accommodation was the same price but the comparison is chalk and cheese. The gardens were very nice.

Enjoyable Stay

Reviewed By HKH99

My wife and I stayed for three nights last month at the Maydena Mountain Cabins during a driving trip around Tasmania. The location is excellent in terms of local attractions and walks - the Gordon Dam, Lake Pedder and the numerous walks around Mt Field National Park. We stayed in the Rose King Cabin which was very comfortable and private. Nice rural and mountain views from the cabin. Self catering is the order of the day - we stocked up in Hobart prior to driving to Maydena. Jo and Stevan were great hosts - very personable and helpful. Stevan feeds the Alpacas at 8.30 each morning which is an interesting activity to join in. Thoroughly recommend Maydena Mountain Cabins as a good base to explore this part of south west Tassie.

Neglected, dirty and broken

Reviewed By stackyj86

A review 8 months ago says the spa wasn’t working. It still isn’t. The place has been seriously neglected. The gym equipment and kids bikes look like they have all been taken from someone’s hard garbage pile. Bikes rusted and flat tyres, gym equipment faulty. Even the basketball and soccer balls are worn/flat. The pool table, the cues are worn and there is no chalk. The sauna isn’t working. The cottage we stayed in had broken window and busted hinges on cupboards, the smoke detector isn’t working. The tree house is covered in grime. The washing machine lint filter was blocked with mouldy lint and I had to clean it. There is a DVD box in the games room with a sign which says to put dvds in here if they aren’t working. The box is full and this gives a good indication of how much time and effort the owners put into maintaining the place. The staff member gives you the wifi access and outright acknowledges how bad it is. It’s 2022, if you are going to provide wifi make it work otherwise it just annoys people. You will see their Facebook page does not allow reviews and seldom has any interaction from any clients. The place has been let go and for near on $300 a night, it is seriously over priced for the almost ghetto like facilities. I would come back if the price was about 1/3rd of what it is because despite the condition of the place, I think my naive children enjoyed it. Like others have said, the view is amazing and the staff member is friendly but that’s about as good as it’s going to get. Most people are happy to part with money for good quality and service. If you are one of these people, you are going to be very disappointed. Very unfortunate as the right business owner could turn this place into something very very special, which it appears it once was.
