As you would expect, The Mountain State displays rustic charm with dramatic river gorges, large limestone caverns and spectacular mountain views. West Virginia hosts outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers looking for fresh-air activities and serene mountain atmosphere. If stimulating city holidays are your preference, Charleston combines warm hospitality with a lovely riverside location. A family-friendly destination, you’ll discover children’s theatre, river park recreation and popular Bridge Road for shopping and dining. Smaller towns blend outdoor adventure with quaint village atmospheres. Set between the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers, Hinton is an historic rail town filled with turn-of-the-century architecture and a host of water activities at its doorstep – rafting, fishing, kayaking and more. In the heart of West Virginia, Summersville is a “Mountain Water Playground.” Its lakeside location encourages outdoor recreation from swimming and boating to scuba diving and rafting. And history buffs can trace Civil War battles throughout the states historic sites and state parks. Hiking or horseback riding along trails through deep hardwood forests is another family favorite, especially when you stop for a picnic along a clear mountain stream.

Located on Blackwater Canyon’s south rim, the lodge at Blackwater Falls State Park offers 54 comfortable rooms with sweeping views of the densely forested gorge below. Built in the 1950s, this lodge predates its sister lodge at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, about 20 minutes away, and has a smaller, quieter atmosphere. All lodge rooms have been extensively renovated, but the mid-century architecture conveys a sense of history and blends in with the natural surroundings. The view of the Blackwater Canyon from the back patio is almost as breathtaking as the park’s famous waterfalls.
We spent two nights here over Memorial Day weekend. We were curious how the remodeled rooms would look given that the place was closed for reconstruction for a long time. When we checked in we learned that we had two rooms booked instead of one. Not sure how it happened but part of the problem was that we never received a confirmation for our bookings. They said that other people had complained about that issue, too. They were able to cancel the 2nd room for us so it worked out ok. I recommend calling for a reservation instead of using their website, however. The remodeled guest rooms were a pretty significant improvement over the old ones. We had a large flatscreen tv with a lot of channels. Everything looked new except for one wood paneled wall and the sliding bathroom door. The door was odd, especially for a remodeled room, because it didn’t fit the doorway. It was off by a few inches. The bathroom was nicely done but the water pressure was poor, both in the shower and sink. The room was clean when we arrived but, like a lot of places, they no longer clean the rooms during your stay. We had the breakfast buffet at the lodge one day. It wasn’t very good. The food was much better during our last stay a few years ago. We didn’t use the pool or fitness center. I did notice that the Game Room was being used as a storage room, though. That was sort of sad. Overall, we liked staying here. Hopefully, the restaurant will improve, though.

Capon Springs is an all--inclusive WV mountain resort where you can completely relax - less than 2 hours from DC. While you are here, explore 4,700 acres of breathtaking scenery, feast on our farm fresh eggs and delicious baked goods prepared daily; or rejuvenate with our healing spring water throughout the resort. Especially in the summer, families, couples and individuals return the same week year after year, to reconnect, feast on country comfort food and participate in camp-like activities
I read several other reviews of Capon before I went so I knew what I was getting myself into. This is not a luxury resort; there is no WiFi, no TV, no cell service, and no 5 star amenities. However, there is great food, exceptionally friendly service, and a lot of activities for all ages. After spending the weekend at Capon, I would highly recommend for anybody looking for a low-key, unplugged getaway. I went to Capon for a girls' weekend with my sister. We felt a bit out of place as first timers, whereas everybody else seemed to be in large family groups, but we were quickly welcomed by Jonathan (one of the owners/family members) who made us feel part of the community. Jonathan made several appearances throughout the weekend, leading a campfire sing along and a tour of the historic spring house. Our room was in Poe with two full beds. It was simple, but clean and well kept. All of the buildings are historic and somethings seemed a bit quirky (two sinks?). The bathroom was simple, perhaps a bit dated, but suited our needs. The doors now have locks and keys, a change due to COVID. Everything is included except for golfing or the spa. There were several activities everyday and you can borrow board games and sports equipment from the main building. There is also a lovely library with a great collection about the history of the property. Highly recommend checking out the historical stuff! The food was delicious, just be prepared to eat what is served. There is no menu and no ordering. Everybody gets the same entree and sides. Meals are also served at set times (8:30 am, 1 pm, 6 pm). COVID Updates: I was very impressed with Capon's COVID measures. Masks were required inside and they frequently reminded people to be aware of their pods and distance outside. The staff were definitely sanitizing and keeping things clean. They added a to go dining option for those who feel uncomfortable eating inside. Overall, I had a great time and enjoyed Capon Springs. Just make sure to read up about the place before you go so you know what to expect.

If you are looking for a secluded place to get away and reconnect with your family and friends, our lodging options at Four Fillies Lodge are the perfect place for your visit. Our estate features 7 uniquely designed cabins varying in price, size, and amenities. Our cabins are spread throughout the property to give your party the privacy it needs for a remote getaway.
We just spent a weekend in the Cowboy Cabin. The cabin was absolutely beautiful, with so many thoughtful details. We loved being next to the rambling creek, walking the trails and the property, and the entire setting. Absolutely wonderful! We can’t wait to return.

We stayed there last September, 2021. I would say wait until October if you want to see the leaves changing. Made this a must stop on our East Coast trip as my husband and I love riding steam-engine railways. Bear Creek Lodge was a rustic, but fantastic place to stay. Just what you could imagine a log cabin lodge to be. Right price, nothing fancy. The little store/restaurant downstairs was priced just right for a small budget compared to the restaurant at the railway. And the food was good, nothing fancy, just right. The people working in the little store were very kind and always asking if we needed anything. I highly recommend going to ride the train and stay at the lodge.

The cabins might be lovely but we wouldn't know. We rented a cabin in May for an early August stay. We spoke to someone at the lodge by phone and booked at that time. We received our confirmation from the lodge and all the information was correct. In the morning, before leaving the house for our four hour drive, we let them know we were on the way. When we got there we were told that they double booked, oops, and they were expecting a different party. It was clear that it was their mistake. We had booked first AND we arrived first. (We had booked for four nights and the other party had booked for three, and they had now double booked the fourth night, too.) They were so sorry! Cindi, the owner, asked if we would stay in her deceased mother's house nearby instead. We had no choice since they would not let us into the cabin and there were no other places available in the area. The house was adequate but not prepared for renters. The drawers were full of someone else's things and the closets were jammed full so that there was no place for us to hang anything. The worst of it, though, is that the front room where you enter the house is a game room. Don't think Monopoly or pool table. There are taxidermized animal heads mounted on every wall, a whole lion standing in a "savannah", and zebra rug taking up the center of the room. Our grandkid was so freaked out she couldn't sleep the first night. The reason I gave two stars instead of one is that they admitted fault and came up with a solution, though certainly not one we would have chosen had we had any choice.

This lodge is outdated. One elevator was out of order, so people were standing in line with their luggage om carts. The curtains in the room were dark and the seams had dry-rotted & were coming apart. THE BED WAS AMAZINGLY COMFORTABLE, and the pillows, too. The balcony seemed old & I wondered if it was safe to stand on the boards. The chairs had broken slats, which were plastic. No refrigerator or microwave in the room. WHAT ??? This is 2020 !!!!!!!!! The elevator was slow. The woman in the gift shop dimmed the lights & said she was closing & that if I needed anything to ask the front desk people. I left !!!!!

Only one hour from the Washington, DC and Baltimore Metro regions, waterfront camping on the Potomac River in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia where Maryland and Virginia meet. Pontoon boats, fishing boats, water skiing, wake boarding and jet skis are welcome. With primitive sites, you can pitch your tent and tie your boat up out front. Bring your RV as well as we've added electrical hook-ups for 2013 and are working on water and sewer. It is a beautiful unique location.
My husband and I recently took the jump to buy an RV and embark on our retirement journey. We love the outdoors and my husband Dave considers himself a camping aficionado. Never have I stayed at such a gorgeous campground, West Virginia is truly wild and wonderful. The service here was impeccable as well, one of the employees helped us back in our RV to the spot and later, we were delivered firewood right to our spot! Dave and I are out and about these days but if I ever come back to West Virginia, I FOR SURE know where I'm staying.

We used our GPS and it took us up and down back unpaved mud road. A truck, dirt bike, or 4-wheeler is equipped for the back road, but for us it was not. We got on the website for another direction and wound out that we should have not used our GPS. So if you plan on going to this place, go onto website and get the directions. On the second day we attempted again following the direction given. Their needs to be bigger bolder signs we passed our round 2x and had to u-turn. Do your research first, on this religion Krishna (Hindu). It's a tours attraction for Hindus in rural West Virginia. To Tour the temple the coast went up to $10.00 you must where slips for your feet or in your socks. Very beautiful inside marble, real gold, and glass window. The building structure is deteriorating from the outside, but if you go to see the amazing view. It's breath taking. It would be a beautiful place for an outside wedding.

We had a great time camping under a massive oak with electric hook up. We were steps from the bathrooms/shower room at the end of the lodge and a very short walk up a small incline to the pond. The pond is large and there are 2 canoes for your use. There are 2 beautiful and primitive camping sites, one at end side of the pond. They are large sites and private and short walk to bathrooms. The hosts are very kind with quick responses. The drive up the mountain was windy but very pretty views and animals like deer, chipmunks, fox and more. The closest real grocery is around 45 minutes away so prepare well. Gas is closer. There are 2 state parks close by, 2 large caverns and many historical signs. You're near the top of the mountain so your view are the treetops of other mountains. Very peaceful. Ask questions of the caretakers as they are very quick to respond. Go ahead and book this place, you will love it!

Located on Greenbriar River in the heart of Marlinton, WV, the Greenbrier Lodge has five rooms with private baths and features cable TV, ceiling fan, central heat and air conditioning, phone with computer hookups.
This place is a great place to get a good meal. The eggs are cooked the way I order them, the pancakes nice and fluffy, and the biscuits and gravy are tasty. The service is fast and efficient, and the girls are great. Always clean, and right on the river.
