We decided to visit the famous Kumbh Festival at short notice last month. All hotels (including Shantila Inn) and tents in the area were sold out for our dates. However, I happened to call a few of them and Shantila was the only one who accepted our request by accommodating us (we were four) in the Owner's emergency/reserved rooms as a very special case for two nights considering we were coming in from overseas. Special thanks to the Owner, Mr Sameer, for the gesture. The hotel itself is in a busy area of the city centre which poses some traffic problems, but once inside the property it was nice and quiet. Mr Rakesh Sinha, the Manager, checked us in efficiently. The room was spacious and well lit with clean linen & towels, complimentary water bottles, running hot & cold water in toilet, and free wifi. Mr Sinha also got us (upon payment of course) rental car with driver to take us around the city and the Festival. Food was very good - not oily or too spicy with prompt room service. Mr Sameer even got specially for us a local sweet called "Rabri" which was delicious. The hotel appeared new and there was some construction activity going on which of course did not disturb us in any way. We were very happy with our stay and would definitely consider this property if we ever decide to go to Allahabad again in future.

This place price is not expensive but the service is also not good. The amenities are also not good. There is nothing great in this place. Small room, dirty bathroom and lots of other issues. Only good thing is price and central location.

I stayed here for a short time as I was not staying in Allahabad overnight. I took non ac room. Room was very small and dirty. Bed covers and pillow covers were not at all clean and there were red color stains/spots on bed cover. Even though I was feeling sleepy and wanted to take some rest, looking at the bed cover, I avoided to sleep on it. Bathroom/toilet was horrible. Wash basin was dirty. Overall it is not hygienic place. Area outside of the hotel is not that good.

The stay was a mixed bag, really . In most parts of India one cannot beat the location of govt hotels and guest houses and so it is with this one too . The hotel is run by the uttar pradesh govt and is located right on the banks of the yamuna river . From our first floor room we had a super view of the river and of the new bridge over it . The room was ok , the sheets and blankets were clean, but the gadgets and the sofas , and towels were worn out . A plug point in the room did not work . Mercifully , the heater did . The wifi was not working . The bathroom fittings were of standard but need maintainence . The balcony was nice and had been swept .... however there were no chairs that could be used to sit there. A special mention for the food though , it was wonderful , homely and tasty . Razzak at the restaurant was a wonderful server , prompt , not angling for a tip and polite in the to the point sort of way which is really good . Would I return here ? yes , given the chance i would like to . Final tip - call ahead and check about any functions on their venue , they rent out a big lawn and by the looks of it the noise can be shattering ?

The hotel is one of the worst hotel in allahabad, better to say in whole India. Our booking for 3 super delux room was done in advance and when we reached we were told that the previous customer has left with thw room keys and we were told that they can provide 1 room at the time and the rest of the rooms will be available after 4 pm. The entrance is so bad that its impossible for aged people to get into the rooms. The condition of the room were too bad. The hotel is not suitable for family travellers or women.

City Hotel is the right choice for visitors who are searching for a combination of charm, peace and quiet, and a convenient position from which to explore Allahabad. It is a comfortable hotel, situated on the Centre of the City. The managers & staffs offer an attentive, personalized service and are always available to offer any help to guests. The hotel is arranged on three floors, without a lift. On the ground floor, apart from the reception, there is a comfortable lounge where you can sit and drink tea, or just read. There is also a splendid balcony, where, you can relax and immerge yourself from morning onwards in the atmosphere of Allahabadi daily life, The rooms are arranged on the Ground First and second floors.
Stayed here for three nights. The first thing is that the street it's on is not pleasant at all, to such an extent that I didn't feel safe walking out at night. My room itself was small but nicely done out, however the bathroom was a different matter and it was filthy with the sink stained a dark brown. Air con was regularly switch off centrally and I had to get someone to turn on the hot water every time I wanted to bathe. The hotel is also a building site and purdude my room I saw holes in the wall crudely filled in the grey cement, wires hanging down. Several times when coming to my room I had to walked underneath people painting the ceiling. Staff did try to be friendly but they couldn't make up for the experience if being here. As I was paying over 1,200 rupees a night for this room I expected more. Veg restaurant but I didn't feel like taking the risk.

The only positive point of this hotel is it's location.Otherwise, the staff is lousy, food is presented in a horrible way, linen and bed sheet seem dirty and there are power cuts at night.Further, the phone doesn't work;so one has to call the reception via cell phone. The final bill is also a hand written 'kachcha bill'. Don't stay in this hotel.
