Once the flourishing trade center of colonial Hokkaido, Otaru is characterized by its canal lined with old western-style warehouses. Today, the canal still bustles, but now it’s travelers as opposed to merchants who frequent the waterway; and the stone buildings that once stored goods now harbor museums, stores, and trendy eateries.

Nice location very easy to find. Staff was friendly and efficient. Craft beer and food were delicious. Besides having four beers on tap they also have a fridge with bottles and cans of craft beer. Food menu had many selections to choose from.

Renovated Japanese style house offer two type of room, dormitory and private room. Enjoy your stay with Japanese style and western style room. Tatami, Japanese mat or Fusuma makes you comfortable. Please just chose accommodation you like. This hostel is managed by students of OUC. restroom and bathroom may be shared with others.
A delightful hostel run by students from the local Otaru University of Commerce. I had originally imagined this place to be a shabby student dig but the property, a newly renovated house once lived by the CEO of a local company, was better equipped and maintained than some of the hotels I stayed in the centre of this town. As I felt tad too old for a dormitory experience (I had enough of that at school) I opted to stay in a single room. Even in the coldest of seasons the room was warm and cozy, and the bed was comfortable and clean. If you are safety-minded you could ask for a room key, though I found this totally unnecessary as there was always someone looking after the house. There is a large kitchen you can use to prepare food, and unless you are looking to indulge in heavy cooking the facility is more than adequate, and in the living room there was a low table and a kotatsu, a Japanese table with the under-the-table heater and a blanket. You can’t experience this in a hotel normally but it is a traditional winter fixture in Japanese homes. An added bonus of staying here was the chance to speak to the students about their life in Otaru. It was a welcome change to the bland experience I had gotten used to staying in a hotel, and a priceless experience spending time with the young local entrepreneurs.

Otaru Guest House "Yarn" a 6-minute walk from Otaru Station. Otaru Canal is also 3 minutes on foot and it is a very convenient accommodation for sightseeing. Room price is 2800 yen (consecutive night is 2500 yen). Single room 3000 yen. Family room 3300 yen. Staying at Otaru Guest House "Thread", slowly walking around the night canal · · · Food village and Sushiya street are also a 5-minute walk from Otaru Guest House "Thread". A delicious trip is recommended.
The guest house was quite a long walk from JR. Its ok if you dont have a lot of luggages but if you do then you'll feel the strain. Upon arrival to the guest house, I find out Reception is closed until 3pm. So if you dont want to waste your time waiting or carrying around luggages, you just leave the bags at a rack outside the Reception desk (the guest house is completely closed and no one will come at the door even if you ring the bell). Btw, this 10am to 3pm is a rule. Meaning even if you stay there for a couple of nights, you need to get out. No sleeping in bec guest house is closed for cleaning and everyone must go. If you arrive at night - the elevator from the 1st floor will be closed as well. There is no elevator inside the guest house so accesibility might be an issue for PWDs or elderly. Elevator is also old so you need to keep pressing open or the floor you want yo go to in order for it to operate. To go to Otaru Canal and the Sakaimachi St will be another long walk. So if you are in for a hearty exercise, good for you. The guest house also does not provide towel, toothbrush or sleepwear so bring your own. Room is pleasant and bed was decent. Bathroom also smelled nice and was clean. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash were provided.

Thank you so much for the care and smiles you've given us :) It was warm and comfortable. And the hosts were the friendliest! We enjoyed chatting and sharing time with them so much. Everything was clean and many informations were given to us. Even during a snowstorm, it is not far from the center, station, and park. The snow resort Tenguyama is 15-20 minutes walk, or 5 minutes by bus. It is possible to eat nearby; the convenience store and post office are really close.

First of all, I did not quite high expect for this rate which I pay. But "Ding" the one, might be owner, who welcome me made everything higher than that. Room is resonable usage even too tiny for someone, really clean, have no air-con but not effect me in September, Shower room and toilet are super clean, nice wooden style, and all available for supporting us. I will not ask more from Otaru, Opopo made it PERFECT already. More than thank you.

The place is about 5min walk from Otaru station. Room is spacious. Gotta climb up a steep and narrow stairway to reach room on third floor. There r two rooms on third floor with shared kitchen, toilet and shower. If you have two families, it will be ideal cos whole floor is yours. In each room, there is a queen size mattress on a platform, and a double deck bed. Total can sleep 4. Toiletries provided r shampoo, conditioner n body soap only. Hair dryer n curler r provided. There is a washing machine but no dryer. Owner is friendly and he will help to carry the luggages up. When checking out, remember to let owner know what time so that he can arrange for the luggage to be carried down.
