We chose Holiday Inn Express Chiayi for our excursion to southern Taiwan because it's a new property and we generally have great experience at IHG properties, but we were thoroughly disappointed by the management and staff. At check-in, we were told that the hotel was fully booked and the on-site parking might be full when we come back later, but the hotel has an off-site contract parking at a restaurant. When we came back after dinner, there were a couple cars lined up in front of the hotel, and the entrance to parking was blocked. There was no sign and nobody was directing cars. We waited a couple minutes before realizing that parking might be full. Since there was no direction to the contract parking lot, we had to navigate and ask around to get to the parking lot. It turned out that the contract parking was also full. We had to park our car in the drive way, left my phone number in the car, and walked 5 minutes back to the hotel. I told front desk about the situation, especially that there were still cars waiting in front of the hotel parking, and the staff asked me to be considerate as they were fully booked and asked our room number. I also asked that if we can move the car to the blocked off parking area in front of the hotel lobby, and she said no. I thought perhaps the night time manager would contact us and offer an explanation if not an apology. Nothing happened. At check-out, I told the front desk staff about the situation. The staff, along with someone who I assumed was the front desk manager, listened and replied that they were fully booked, and the manager said that he "understands that we were inconvenienced." We received no apology during our entire stay. The hotel was also apparently not meeting the hygiene requirements during the pandemic. Nobody entering the hotel was checked for temperature, and the restaurant staff didn't even wipe the table between guests during breakfast. Location-wise, the hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the rear entrance of Chiayi Station. The hotel is in a somewhat shady neighborhood, surrounded by karaoke restaurants and pachinko parlors. There were limited amenities and restaurants within walking distance, and as mentioned above, the hotel offered extremely limited parking (around 30 for 127 rooms). The Holiday Inn Express brand certainly wasn't renowned for great service, but it is beyond me how a property can be so bad, yet feel entitled (both their attitude and that they had no problem charging a 10% service fee). If you are planning to spend $100+/night in Chiayi, I would recommend perhaps the Evergreen Hotel, or literally anything but Holiday Inn Express Chiayi.

The Wenhua Chiayi location sits in Chiayi’s most popular area in Wenhua Road. The hotel contains floors for business travelers and youth hostels, giving it the quality of business hotels and the vibrancy of youth hostels. The 45-ping Orange Social boasts a spacious and comfortable living room and an open balcony where guests can freely interact. The holy grounds of Chiayi democracy, “Fountain Roundabout” is a brisk 1 to 2-minute walk while it’s a short 5-minutes by car to the delicious foods of Wenhua Night Market, Chiayi Station, or Beimen Station. This is the best location where you can explore Chiayi, experience the hospitality of Southern Taiwan, or depart to Alishan
Days before checking in, I have contacted the front desk for inquiries about parking and breakfast, two receptionists I have spoken with were both polite and courteous, and were eager to assist me in every way with enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. On the date of our arrival, the same courteous attitude was still shown from the one we met during check-in, she also explained everything we need to know during our stay in detail. We would also like to appreciate her for her arrangement of upgrading our room to a windowed one. The parking space at B2 was limited and could only fit about ten vehicles or so, and one should be careful as the entry/exit was machine-operated. However, the hotel did offer compensation if you have to park at a designated parking space instead of the one inside the hotel. The room was extremely clean in every corner, including but not limited to, carpet, sofa, bed linings, bathroom, toilet, shower room, sink, which was always our priority when choosing accommodations. The room itself is spacious enough and quite comfy for both of us. We have made a request for more pillows, and the lady just delivered them within five minutes, quite swift. We indeed had a wonderful sleep. The breakfast was served between 7 to 10 am, and there were varieties of food to choose from, including local delicacy. One thing I would suggest to the hotel is to bring the food much hotter instead of just maintaining them at a warm temperature. Overall, it's an amazing hotel with affordable prices and excellent service and cleanliness in Chiayi downtown, and we will definitely stay here again in the future.

We stay one night and this is our first time to visi this hotel. Good location in 文化路 and easy to eat and go shopping in night market. Breakfast is also good and provide Chiayi famous chicken rice for guests to taste. Only one thing needs to improve is that hotel is very closed to main street and noisy even stay in high floor (10th Floor)

Pros: 1. Nice and big room with high ceiling. 2. Cleaned and neat room. 3. Welcoming gifts for guest in the room. 4. Free water bottles. 5. Hotel staff are helpful. 6. Good location easy to find. Cons: 1. Gas station next to it, some people may care about it but I’m ok. 2. They have smoking room. My room has smoke burned carpet, I’m ok with it but the hotel needs to get rid of it before next guest. 3. Wifi speed was just ok.

Located next to night market, conveniently located. Room is quite spacious with amenities equipped. Free breakfast provided but the food was not fantastic. Room ceiling was pretty low, not suitable for tall people.

Located right by Chiayi train station, Chiayi King Hotel is a wonderful choice for international travellers. Being in the epicenter of Chiayi city, there are shops, restaurants, and night markets nearby.
Because it was close to the train station we holed up here for a night. Nice place, front desk spoke no English, but we managed. They were pretty strict about restaurant hours. We walked to all of the main sights in Chiayi and then the next morning hopped on the Alishan train.

Location is fantastic, is minutes from the main train/bus station, and 3 of the famous chicken rice places. Hotel staff is friendly and knowledgable, and very kid friendly. Room is clean and bright, with a small balcony. Bathroom is a bit on the small size, but manageable. Buffett breakfast is just alright, is a great location to stay but I would skip the hotel breakfast and explore other food options nearby.

The service is pretty good! However it is remodeled based on an old hotel. The carpet is dirty and the view from the room I stayed is not good. In the morning, down the hallway I smell like someone might be smoking in their room. The hotel should do better on this part.

I stayed here one night. Bathroom was clean. Hotel offered many basic stuff like soap, toothpaste and toothbrush. Bedsheets were clean. There was enough walking space in the room to open my suitcase. In general, the place was quiet enough for me to sleep. The only thing I didn't like was having a large mirror wall right next to my bed.

The worst hotel I have ever stayed in! The walls are so thin you can hear everything happening in the rooms next to you from the toilet flushing to the hair dryer being used, switches being flicked etc. The housekeeping staff have radios that they use and these are so loud you hear they wake you up in the morning. The room is small, the facilities are lacking, the cleanliness isn't the best but for the price I'm okay with that... But! What I'm not okay with is the rude ignorant and obnoxious staff/management. Not 1 person acknowledge us on arrival or at any other time during our 3 days here, at any point walking in or out of reception or at breakfast. They insisted on prepayment at check-in which I've never experienced at any hotel in the world. They insisted we go the reception each day to let them know if we want the room serviced even though there is a dnd/service room button in the room. For the price you can imagine the quality of guest that stay here so they will happily stand outside you room at 7am having a conversation with other guest laughing and carrying on and when you ask them to be quite they don't care. This happened all 3 days at multiple times through our stay with different guests. Breakfast is terrible, no cold milk for cereal, just hot milk from the coffee machine, the only western food is cereal so if you are not comfortable with Asian food definitely do not stay here, the hotel does not cater to foreigners in anyway, no English speaking people at reception, luckily my wife is Taiwanese so we were okay but if you don't speak it look for another hotel. Have stayed in other hotels in Chai-yi before and loved it but this one is horrible...... Avoid at all cost
