Located on the outskirts of the town of Uzès, Hotel Saint Geniès enjoys a privileged location, both in quiet and close to the historic centre of Uzès.
We had booked four nights at this hotel, but we wished we could have staid longer. It was very nice and peaceful, good location (15 minutes walking distance from Uzes), free parking, nice fenced swimming-pool. The room was large, quiet, comfortable, new furniture, excellent bed, with a large, new bathroom. Breakfast was great, a buffet with many cold choices, good bread, and you can ordered eggs. The owners, Marie and Laurent, are very friendly, helpful and made us feel welcome. I hope that we will be able to come back and visit again.

What can I say about this hotel that is of a positive nature ? Nothing, I'm afraid. First advice: do not trust the pictures on their website as they do not make justice to the disaster this hotel really is. We booked based on their website pictures and were fooled by the outrageous price into thinking the quality would be in line. Not to the slightest. (we paid 270 euros including average quality dinner for one with one glass of house wine) We arrived late and had to negotiate a substantial flight of stairs all the way up to reception. Thankfully neither me nor my husband are handicapped (no handicap access to be seen anywhere unless they consider the back access to the swimming pool past the garbage bins as one ...) The decoration is a joke, a mix of a bad version of Cirque du Soleil with a garage sale from my odd auntie. The bedroom ? Well, I don't even know where to start, from the bed headboard that does not match the size of the mattress to the ridiculous furniture all around ... I don't think I have stayed in a worst place in my life. To add insult to injury my husband got Legionnaire's disease and this is actually the only place where he could have got it. When I called, after he got out of hospital where he stayed for 10 days fighting for his life, the manager's reaction was defensive and of complete denial mentioning it was impossible as they comply with the law, etc etc. But out of interest, he never asked for our name, date of stay or any other personal details so he could at the very least isolate the room and call the relevant authorities as an urgent matter as this is a potentially deadly disease. He held onto his guns and that was it. As a side comment, Legionnaire's is a bacteria which may be present in either water pipes or jacuzzis or in unclean AC units. In our case it is in the AC unit because we were so disappointed with the bedroom we did not even take a shower in the morning, instead we left early and went back home. Proof hopefully will be provided in due course as the relevant French Health Department has been directly notified by the hospital where my husband was treated. So. That brings me back to my review's title. Run for your life ! Literally.

La Maison d’Uzès sits perfectly in the centre of the glorious town of Uzes. Behind its emblematic and noble facade, over three centuries of history are revived today in this 12-roomed boutique hotel boasting an intimate and warm atmosphere. After four years of careful renovation, a new chapter in the long and rich history of La Maison d’Uzès begins. Now transformed into a charming and intimate hotel, La Maison d’Uzès has regained all its splendour. Led by Ariel Balmassière, architect at Monuments Historiques and Marie-José Tavares, interior designer, the building works have uncovered ancient features which have added to the historical charm. The twelve bedrooms, laid out around the majestic stairway, are light and airy, spread over two floors each boasting picturesque views over the rooftops and gardens of Uzès.
Each phase of the 6 dish dinner was exceptional. The Roman bath and accompanying massage totally relaxing. Room comfort fine but furnishings need attention. The reception desk staff were courteous and most helpful and there was the highest level of professionalism throughout the establishment.

Very nice place, nothing to say. Only improvement could be to add curtains in the room for privacy and darker room at night. Welcoming staff with very good advices and tips about Uzes. The patio is nicer than on the pictures

Relaxtion and calm will be the keywords for your stay in the heart of this lovely building whit its Provencal charm. After spending the day discovering a region rich in history, come and recharge your batteries in this haven of peace. Le Chamarel offers a cuisine rich in the scents of Provence, and can be discovered in the musical atmosphere created by the cicadas. All the rooms are air conditioned and non-smoking and have an extra wide bed.
We had high expectations from the reviews but the reality was different. The place had a run down feel, a Bt shabby and lots of weeds in the grounds. Shower either scalding hot or freezing Restaurant was closed Breakfast was adequate but poorly organised. The outside tables had evidently been laid the previous evening and everything was wet, napkins, chairs, tables.

Uzes is charming, & the hotel is convenient to the bus into town & to all restaurants or services you may need. However, I don't know what we did to incur the disdain of the host, Eric. I am an experienced world traveler who, sadly, speaks only English, but I endeavor to learn a few words of whatever language is spoken in the countries I visit. I can only assume that my lack of French was a strike against me from day one. When emailing in English for availability to the hotel's site, I received no response, but when I tried again 2 days later using Google translate (which translated my English into French), I received an immediate response (in French) from our host, Eric. All future email exchanges were in French only. That would have been fine except that Eric speaks English very well; he just chooses not to. This was, I think, the key to our poor relationship. He seems to believe that if you don't speak French, you don't deserve his respect and are worthy instead of his outright disdain. His condescending attitude was relentless & palpable. He was unpleasant from start to finish, & I cannot recommend his hotel for this reason alone. We stayed in the annex across the street which was more modern although without working wifi. (You will find many complaints on this site of the useless wifi which works only in the main building's lobby.) If you don't speak French, do yourself a favor, & make both yourself & the management happy: stay elsewhere.

The hotel largely chose us as we were needed a place that would let our little border terrier dog stay, and wasn’t too too expensive. We are very happy we ended up at La Taverne de Sophie. Huge clean room with smart modern decor and a beamed wooden ceiling, a comprehensive buffet spread for breakfast, kind friendly reception and cleaning staff (especially with our dog) and within walking distance of absolutely everything from eateries to the main Uzes square and from the supermarket to the countryside. We would return without hesitation. After six nights it truly felt like home.

This is a joint-owned property, we stayed in one of five bedrooms managed now by new owner Zacharrie who was a charming host that did everything that he could for our stay. The bedrooms are very spacious, and the hotel itself is very rustic and very relaxing although I do think that it could be improved by a general tidy up of the grounds and the swimming pool and maybe updating some of the furniture around the hotel and pool - though some will no doubt say that the old wooden furniture (that has seen better days) adds to the rustic look and feel. The staff are all lovely, and no doubt work very hard, the breakfast here was fine and overall we enjoyed our stay. I just feel it is a little over-priced for what is on offer. A clean up of the grounds and pool would justify the cost.

Saturday evening. Full. Happy to get a table. Service totally uncoordinated, slow and chaotic. Two three course menus at Euro 10 and 15 - excellent value for money. In the end credit cards could not be accepted because of technical problems. Our last visit was much better...we will give them another chance.
