Traditional over priced fjellhotel, issues with Corona precautions

Reviewed By PamelaN674

We booked Straand Hotell as part of Telemarkskanalen package, we bought the dinner package as an add on. We stood quite a while at reception waiting for someone to check us in, one receptionist was on the phone, another appeared, no welcome just that we could choose dinner at 8pm or 9pm and breakfast 9am or 9.30am. It appears that the hotel prioritises bus groups over individuals. We asked for an earlier breakfast slot because we had to drive to the pickup point for the canal trip for 10am, no, there would be a long queue if we had breakfast earlier. Dinner that evening was a nightmare, the restaurant was packed, 3 bus groups were in and remained in the restaurant the 25mins we were there. I had to ask individuals to hold a metre distance from me, but they laughed in my face and replied they we fully vaccinated....I was not. The 'hot'food was barely warm and the plates were cold pretty standard in Norwegian hotels unfortunately. I felt like we were being offered the leftovers after someone else's party, the buffet was pretty much empty. I was livid, we could have had a 3 course a la carte meal for what we paid for these' leftovers'. I asked at reception if I could give some feedback and related our experience and how shocked I was at the hotels blatant disregard for CV19 precautions. She said she would speak to the tour guides for the bus groups. Next morning we went to breakfast at 8.30am, the restaurant was almost empty and we were able to relax and spend more time over it than dinner the evening before. I dreaded dinner but was pleasantly surprised to find order and system in the restaurant, the woman I spoke to in reception was there and is evidently a manager but never presented herself. The buffet was more filled than the evening before but the hot food was again tepid and the plates cold. I took the opportunity to thank her and she said that the tour guides and groups had been reminded of the current restrictions. The hotel is an old mountain hotel, well maintained but nothing special, staff weren't particularly friendly and when we checked out we weren't asked if we enjoyed our stay.

In general OK - but the hotel needs improvement.

Reviewed By Jonathan F

Depending on where you get a room the hotel is in need of upgrades or maintainance. The location of the hotel is good, Skien is not a "tourist" spot in my opinion but the hotel is nicely situated by the harbour, with restaurants close by. There is some noise from the restaurants if you have the "seaside" view so if you require a silent room ask for one in the rear of the hotel. Breakfast and evening meals were superb and worth the visit.

Dalen Hotel

Dalen Hotel is a fairytale hotel, build in 1894 in grand romantic style with dragonheads, towers and balconys. The paper "Varden" wrote in 1894: "The new elegant furnished Hotel at Dalen, at the top of the Bandak waters, is now ready to recieve guests".After early golden days and later years of decay the hotel was in 1994, after years of restauration finished to welcome its guests again, all restored back to its original beauty. It has the same soul, calmness, peace and atmosphere as the wooden castle that opened for more than 125 years ago.

Pure exellence!

Hotel Dalen is truly an architectural gem in the midst of stunning Norwegian scenery - but there is more! The hotel has an ambience of nostalgia, which transports you instantly back in time - it is as if you are actually back in 1894! The service is effortless, friendly and of a standard not found anywhere else in Norway - other norwegian establishments has a lot to learn from Dalen! We enjoyed both a gourmet dinner, and an impressive afternoon tea on the beautiful terrace - overlooking the fjord, whith the resident family of geese strolling by.. It was simply blissfull! What ever you do - do not miss out on the chance to experience pure exellence! Jan wilhelm schussler

Just what I needed

I stayed at this hotel as part of a weekend yoga retreat for 2 nights. Even though this was the first time the hotel organized such an event -with minor hiccups- the total experience was just wonderful. The hotel itself is amazing, the perfect combination of modern and historic. Kudos to the interior designer who obviously respects the walls from the 1700s but managed to make this a top-comfy environment. The hotel restaurants (one by the water and the other in the back garden surrounded by the various historic buildings) were top notch. The service was professional but friendly at the same time (a find in Norway by the way) - and that food! We had the pleasure to meet and thank the head chef, #DaveCook in person. Triple gin tonic caviar anyone? Just WOW. This is a gem of a place. Just go!

Pleasant hotel - but...

Reviewed By eoMsraL

Stayed Friday to Sunday in September 2021. Arriving from the road and parking lot, the hotel looks like a grim conference area from the 70s. Luckily, once you get inside you realise that it is much fresher inside the common areas and on the opposite side towards the sea. Our room was quiet inside and outside (but this were out of season). We heard that the hotel as some refurbished rooms. This one, a family room at the far north end, was not. On a positive not, it was large and clean – but everything was pretty worn down. Some roof spotlight didn’t work, the toilet flusher had mood swings, the TV didn’t support casting and the beds were not up to standard for the hotel’s price level. Including the door- and window frames, the hallway outside the room etc. – everything has seen better days. The staff was very friendly, including the reception, restaurant and bar. They managed to make you feel very welcome and taken care of. The food was generally good and with a decent selection, although the buffet price level didn’t match the overall quality/selection. The water park makes it a very convenient hotel when travelling with children, which we did (11 and 12 years), and it seems to be a good place to stay with activities for smaller kids as well. We stayed in September, but it seems to be a better summer spot, due to the proximity to the sea with outdoor areas and activities. Travelling in Norway, you expect to be spending a bit more than you’d like, and here you will unfortunately feel that whatever you do. For the price level of the room/stay, you’d think that admission to the waterpark is free for hotel guests. Think again. If you want to use the air hockey or pool table – 20 kr pr. match. For a hotel with this profile, you’d expect something to be included. Also – the reception doesn’t provide coins, so you have to go to the nearby store to withdraw money. Fair enough – a shuffleboard in another area of the hotel is complimentary. The buffet dinner is varied and well prepared, but also here the price level is too high, especially for the children. The bar may be where you have the most normal prices, but slightly high also here. Even the products bought in the reception area. 45 kr for a small bottle of water. Free parking though, which is nice ? Looking beyond the feeling of “throwing money everywhere”, you’ll have a pleasant stay with presumably happy children at this hotel.

Girls-weekend package deal

Reviewed By Stinemilla81

We were 4 girls staying two nights, we jumped on a 1500 kr per person package deal. The room was modern looking, concrete walls, big windows, huge bathroom, I think they called a suite. But it was basically just a big room. The double bed was too soft for my liking. I could feel my bed-mate move. And the last two girls slept on a sofa bed that made a lot of noise, so not satisfied with that. We did not sleep too well. Other than that we were happy with the stay. The staff was very service minded. The breakfast was decent, a lot of things to choose from. I was not too happy with the coffee - which I am quite picky about. There was a spa-treatment included in the package deal, which was lovely, and we got a bottle of bubbles and fresh fruit to our room. So the price was very good. The location too, very close to everything. The only thing I wasn't that happy with was the quality of the beds.

Travelled with 50+ teenagers on a 3 day trip. The Danish hosts made us feel welcome, served great food and had patience with us (it did get a bit noisy). Rooms were nice and the common areas were new and in simple Nordic design - very pleasant. The view towards Gaustadtoppen is amazing! Wifi, parking, a small kiosk, sauna and you can go for a swim in the lake! I will come back to this place!

Don't get a room in the old part

Reviewed By 785yngves

Must be a new and an old part at this hotel, and I obviously got the old part. This goes for the old part in first floor: Don't go there. I've been to many hotels, and normally stay in the room to work or relax. For the first time I found it so bad I rather go anywhere else than that room. It smelled like the 50s and looked like the 50s. Looking like the 50s I can live with but the smell together with moist (water leakage damage) bathroom was terrible. The new part with resting area was nice and comfortable, and even with a shuffle puck board. Breakfast was good. Tio few parking places with the hotel.

Nice 3-star rooms - older but extremely clean. Remodeled bathroom and nice bedding. The lobby sitting area, bar and restaurant are top class. Included breakfast was great and we also had dinner (very few option within driving distance). Dinner offered a pork, fish and venison option for the main and a couple of starters/deserts. Great food and fair prices. Friendly staff. Beautiful location on a lake with hiking or just relaxing. We only stayed 1 night but would have been fine with 2 or 3 and relaxing. Highly recommended.
