This is a truly strange hotel located miles from anywhere although the countryside was nice (on the rare occasion is stopped raining). The hotel looks like something you might find in the Tyrol but a bit more rustic with an onsen. The rooms are located down covered pathways and are spread out across the resort. Inside our room was very basic and the walls were largely constructed of mismatched wood with little furniture (and what is there is very uncomfortable). It was a bit smelly and there were two unsavoury looking pull down beds which would have allowed 4 people to sleep there. The 'bathroom' was terrible and had an unpleasant sunken shower next to a larger sunken bath, the only way to have a shower was to hand hold the shower head. The decor was similar throughout the main part of the hotel - lots of wooden beams and walls but it did seem fairly cosy in the lounge and restaurant. In contrast the food in the restaurant was outstanding, by far the best we had in Japan. As we were part of a large group we had a set 4 course meal for dinner and each was both delicious and faultless. Drinks were expensive but this is the same at every Japanese hotel. The staff were lovely and made sure we were happy with everything. Strangely after a couple of days the hotel did grow on me and I started to understand why people would choose to stay but I'm afraid the bathroom was so bad I couldn't award more than 3 stars despite the quality of our meals.

Fantastic world with emotional depth. Entrance to romantic atmosphere. Our 30,000㎡site has 30 buildings connected by corridors 300 meters in total length to the main building with thatched roof under which fire wood has been burned years since the opening 24 years ago. They are detached guest rooms, free-flowing hot spring containing high level hydrogen carbonate directly from the source, and restaurants.

This Ryokan (Japanese traditional hotel) has 100 years of history. The town where this ryokan is located is very quiet and relaxing. The ryokan serve dinner and breakfast in a private room. Their bath water is carbonated spring. Although the temperature of the water is relatively lower you will feel very warm after having a bath.

Nice onsen in the highland. Great place to relax and walking in the wood or view the stars. Western breakfast, order sabu sabu dinner but chef not around, didn't try it. Dinner in winter is a problem as nearby no reztaurant or convenient store. Have to drive 25min to town for dinner.

Whilst the carpet in the corridors may have seen better days, we really were pleased with our three day stay. The Japanese style room was excellent. Especially given the price. The whole place was very clean, and staff, while not speaking much English, were extremely helpful. We had breakfast included, which was lovely. We had dinner two nights from the limited a la Carte menu. Very cheap and good value. The diners that had meals included seemed to get nice food. Most meals there was a little burner with a tajine like pot one top. Sometimes with liquid to coock the food, sometimes more like a grill. The Onsen is ok too.

We were only planning to stay one night and ended up staying for a second night. Very comfortable traditional style Japanese house. Plenty of room for our family of 5. Easy bicycle parking and room for all of our gear. Very clean room and spaces, a kitchen to prepare our own food, great hosts/staff, and a comfortable place to hangout. We were invited to join some of the staff and local friends to make Takoyaki. A highlight of our 2.5 month bike trip in Japan. I would recommend for any traveler. Taketa is a fun place to walk around and visit shrines and other places of interest.
