Portpatrick Hotel

Portpatrick is a small fishing village set in a peaceful and unspoilt corner of Southern Scotland. The Portpatrick Hotel is the perfect base from which to explore this delightful area. The Portpatrick Hotel is a spectacular property standing on Galloway’s clifftops in nine acres of grounds, overlooking the village and its secluded harbour. The area is a haven for lovers of sports and the outdoors. You’ll also find a variety of wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. From the hotel you can enjoy day trips to nearby Stranraer, magnificent historical sites and gardens, or even a trip by ferry to Northern Ireland.

Location good but below average overall

Stayed for one night - the location is great, perched on a hill/cliff above Portpatrick, with great views to the village and sea, and the building itself looks fairly attractive. On arrival after 3pm our room wasn't ready for 10 minutes which was irksome and the welcome could've been friendlier. The room we were given (Room 2) was in the basement, approached by a not particularly appealing stair way and corridor. The room itself was quite plain and dreary with stains on the carpet. It didn't actually have a window but rather a windowed door out onto a small patio area. This was the room's saving grace - to be able to open the door and look out on the aforementioned view was pleasant (albeit this was directly located underneath the sit-out area near the bar with accompanying noise). The bathroom was pretty tiny - definitely not comfortable for a long stay, with just some handwash provided. The bed was a bit soft for my liking but I did have a good sleep. The room had tea/coffee, kettle and some biscuits but not much else - and tiny TV on the wall. The dining room was fairly grand and nicely decorated and the menu was okay - not massively varied though. The prices were a little on the expensive side and the sea bass dish I had while nice enough, to me, didn't warrant the cost, and I'm not sure the accompanying sides (turnip and brocolli with a sasla verde) was really the ideal choice. The vegetable lasgane was decent enough. The bar service was fine with £6.95 cocktails and the sit out area offers great views but could do with some more seating. You can access coastal walks directly from the grounds and get down to the village via the stepped path down the cliff (perhaps difficult for those with mobility problems). Overall the stay was acceptable for one night, but based on my experience I wouldn't want to stay there for a longer period and wouldn't want the same room again. I don't think it offered good value for money.

Owners very drunk on our arrival

Reviewed By Mmf270

As an experienced and frequent traveller both here in Scotland and abroad, I have to say that my experience at the Blinkbonny was simply bizarre. I have stayed before and knew what to expect. Clean, pleasant, nicely maintained gardens, cheap but cheerful. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared to be confronted by an extremely drunk and aggressive owner. Admittedly, there was confusion of what time we had to check in and we did arrive late (1940 hrs), however one of our party had gone earlier to collect the keys. I personally arrived to be confronted by Robert (owner) who could hardly stand up or string a sentence together. After respectfully listening to him, I apologised for any inconvenience where he settled down. I went into my room to drop off my bag and on exiting my room he confronted me again. The lady owner was so drunk she entered one of out groups room ( for which she apologised when we left). The rest of our stay went smoothly however it was very awkward. Either Robert was ashamed if his behaviour or couldn't remember what he had done. Anyway, it was the platinum jubilee and perhaps the owners were enjoying the festivities a bit too much. I'm genuinely sorry to have to submit a poor review but feel I must inform future patrons as I myself always consult reviews before booking.

Family meal with our dog

Reviewed By CathW143

The staff are so helpful with every request, and happily reserved us an outdoor table so the dog could join us. Food was excellent quality - I had the chicken & mushroom filled crepe with chips. The crepe and sauce were delicious and the crepe kept its texture rather than becoming a soggy mess! My teenage fussy son devoured a huge garlic bread pizza and most of a margarita pizza too! They also willingly made small adjustments to the dishes for each of us both for dietary reasons and also personal preferences. We have been 2 years in a row and will be back again next year ? we can’t recommend this place any more highly!!

Great place to stay

Reviewed By Barbara M

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of May. Comfortable, bright, quiet room with two easy chairs and a great view of the sea (Room South). The hotel also has a good lounge area where they serve tea and shortbread in the afternoon, and drinks before dinner. The food, a set menu, was extremely good. The heritage tomato first course, the beef and the strawberry souffle were outstanding. What we particularly liked was the wide range of half bottles of wine available. This meant we could easily have white wine for the fish course and red for the meat. My only quibble about the food was that I would have liked more vegetables. Service was excellent. Guests were given different tables each day so that everyone got a chance to sit at the window table. It was windy by the hotel, but the beautiful rolling countryside was a treat, and if you are prepared to travel, there's lots to see, the Mull of Galloway being a particular highlight.

Sad to say AVOID

We have visited before and loved the food. The menu has been drastically reduced in size and is very unimaginative. We ordered the soup which was very nice. The main course was fish and chips and it was awful. By the sea , restaurants around serving fresh sea food and this was tasteless, pre battered fish - completely tasteless and very over priced. We had 2 waitresses - first was excellent second looked like she wanted to be anywhere else and by this time so did we! Sorry guys - never write a review like this but it was very very average. You really need to up your game when there are other pubs and restaurants so close who are in a different league. Bitterly disappointed

Wonderful stay!

Reviewed By 1994jennm

I have came to Portpatrick most summers since I was a small child but never stayed the night. It was my boyfriend and dogs first visit so I decided they deserved a wee treat with some dinner and staying over at this lovely hotel. From the price and mixed reviews I was a bit worried but I’m pleased to say my expectations were exceeded! First off, my dog is a rescue and has never been on a “holiday” so I was a bit nervous how he’d be somewhere new, luckily the staff were super friendly and always stopped to make a fuss of Kai which really made the whole trip for me as it put me at ease so much. The staff were great in general nothing was too much bother, good sense of humour and chatty. Really made the stay for us! There was an enclosed garden down from our room which meant after we were done for the day we could take the dog out there if he needed a pee. The room was small but the deal was cheap, besides, I’m a big lass and I managed with me my man and dog perfectly comfortably! The bathroom was clean and spacious enough. Nice hot shower and fluffy towels. Working TV, kettle and tea station, dressing table with nice view of the harbour. We also decided last minute to have dinner and it was great albiet a little pricier than we are used to where we are from. We had mussels and a bacon cheese burger. Chips were lovely, fresh tasting potato. Onion rings also had a lovely crispy batter. My boyfriend was super impressed with his burger, I had the mussels which were great tasting my only gripe if any was that there was a bit much broken shell in the sauce so I couldn’t eat it up like soup at the end. But I did not highlight this as I still enjoyed it and the staff were so lovely we didn’t want to be picky. The dog was allowed in the bar while we ate and again the staff were great with him. Worth noting the drink prices are quite reasonable. Breakfast was nice, we had some people staying below us who were very noisy during the night and we could hear everything so although the bed was comfy this did disturb us slightly though not the hotels fault just worth noting it’s easy to hear other guests. I’m sure they had to put up with me trudging up the stairs. All in all it’s a great hotel for the price and the staff were fantastic and very accommodating. The room we got was small but great views, decent bathroom amenities. We will definitely be back!

We had a very friendly welcome when we arrived for our weekend stay. The room ( 2) was large and well furnished, and had lovely bed linen and fluffy towels also small toiletries. The shower room was very roomy and very clean. The breakfast was great with such a large choice, and nothing was too much trouble. Mary even brought a sausage for our little dog Lucy to eat for her breakfast. We will definitely be visiting again when we come back to the area.
