I am giving Plaza Riu a very mixed review because of my experience there - I was there for 5 nights for a conference and I had both good and bad experiences. Let's start with the bad experiences: I met some really incompetent and rude staff, in particular there was Endy the night duty manager who was shockingly rude to me. I tried explaining to him the problem I had and he didn't seem to understand my English, so I switched to Spanish given that I spoke Spanish well and he had the audacity to get insulted at the fact that I switched to Spanish with him - he was like, "sir I speak English perfectly well, you don't need to speak Spanish with me." And I had to tell him, well if you claim to speak English well, you don't seem to understand what I have just explained to you in English and that's why I offered to explain it to you in Spanish. The staff at the hotel seem to be really proud of the fact that they speak English well but really, the standard does vary and whilst I don't expect them to be fluent in English, it was shocking that Endy could take offence at me trying to explain the problem to him in his native language. I was placed in a no win situation - he couldn't understand me in English and got upset with me trying to explain my problem to him in Spanish, which was his mother tongue. Talk about frustrating! Good grief, so few people in Panama speak English well and I usually get grief for not being fluent enough in Spanish in Panama but this was the one time someone gave me grief for trying to speak Spanish in Panama. Aura was another member of staff who was lacking in empathy when things went wrong, there was that look on her face like, "yeah things didn't go as planned, I just work here, see if I care." Then there were members of staff who were super nice like Glory and Marino - ironically, both of them were quite happy to speak to me in a mix of Spanish and English, happily allowing me to switch back and forth between the two. I got along well with the both of them and wondered why other members of staff weren't as brilliant as these two. It is worrying though that you can have some members of staff who are absolutely great when it comes to dealing with guests when things go wrong and others who have that, "see if I care, I know you're upset but I can't be bothered" attitude. There is no quality control when it comes to their staff training, with some staff being very good with guests whilst others being downright rude with that classic "I really can't be bothered to help you, I don't care" attitude. So it's really your luck of the draw which member of staff responds to your query whenever you need something - are you going to get a rude person who can't be bothered or a genuinely nice member of staff who knows the meaning of empathy for their guests? Look, I was there for a conference, I was super busy most of the time - I wasn't there for a holiday. I didn't have time to split hairs with the staff, all I wanted was for someone to respond when things went wrong. As for the rooms, yeah my room was nice but for my first night, I had someone check into the room next door very late and then was very noisy all night long, disturbing my rest. Then I got lucky, that person must have left and the rest of my stay was very peaceful at night. So noise can travel between rooms and whether or not you get a restful night's sleep will depend on what kind of people are in the room(s) adjacent to yours. Breakfast was pretty good though the quality of the coffee was disappointing. The pool area looked nice but alas, as I was on a business trip, I didn't get to spend much time there. But hey, the conference facilities at the hotel were pretty good.

This was the worst resort I have been to. I came here for my 50rh birthday and it was a mistake. This is the cheapest resort I have seen. The staff does not treat people equally, very bias towards certain people. The staff is not friendly, no one speaks English except at the front desk. The food is horrible. We walked into the buffet restaurant exactly when the opened up and the food looked like it had been there for hours. We had to beg the wait staff for service, when they catered to others. The rooms were very boring and the mini bar was half stocked and you have to call everyday to get restocked. I've been to several RIUs and the price to stay here was great, but you get what you pay for. There was one elevator to the whole resort and we had to walk up and down 7 floors everyday to go to the beach or to eat. Please don't waste your money. The app was very useful. I had to call the front desk when we first got there and the phone rang for ten mins and no one ever answered. I had to use the app to get service. The speciality restaurants was always not available. Half the time our only choice was the nasty buffet. I watched certain individuals get turned away then other individuals being lead in the restaurant that supposedly was fully booked. This resort is not right. Don't waste your money. Everything is sub standard.

Still here! I would have left if I could get a refund. 1st time with AMR group & last time. I expect way more. The resort is very tired. The room made my sinuses have issues & feel like crap with the mustiness & mold. Not only my room but my other couple traveling with us too. Food mediocre. Only a few stand out employees. Don’t even get me started about how you have to chase down employees just for a towel or coffee for your room. Best thing about our Panama trip was our personal tour guide Alahendria! Reach out if you want her number.

We stayed for five days as a couple with the intention of discovering Panama and getting some downtime at the hotel. My wife manages several hotels and is known to be very picky and I can tell you the hotel did not only not dissapoint but exceeded our expectations in every way possible. From the moment you make the reservation you can tell the hotel is all about taking care of their guests. Jesus the reservations agent followed up on us several time on the small requests we had and personally ensured that they were taken care of. Kimberly at the reception recognised us every time she saw us and connected us with the concierge Kathering who helped us with all our bookings around town and has a wealth of knowledge on the city. Last but not least we really enjoyed meeting Kerly who has been in charge of guest services for a short time but seems to be everywhere! The hotel itseld has a lot to offer! A fantastic spa where I got one of the best massages in years recommended by Claudia the manager. Great restaurants of which my favorite is The Grill which just opened recently. Funny thing is that I am a vegetarian and I had no problem ordering from the regular menu. Roger and Thayan at breakfast where always there with a smile and ready to jump start our day. The team at the pool is a blast, Nudia and Leonardo give the place this summer resort vibe and remembered what we drank. I understand that aside from this the hotel has a golf course, tenis courts, paddle courts, etc.. which are all available if you stay at the hotel although we did not have the time to use them. We unexpectedly booke our trip to Panama as a trial and will be back to see more of it soon! Thanks to the entire team for a fantastic stay and making us feel like we were the only guests staying!
