Where Onsen Heaven meets Hell Valley, Takimotokan extends a warm Hokkaido welcome. At Takimotokan you step into the very special world of the Japanese onsen ryokan. A world of hospitality that extends a warm welcome, steeped in over 160 years of history. Where active volcanoes feed healing onsen waters, beautiful natural vistas signal the changing seasons, and refined Japanese cuisine is made from the freshest Hokkaido produce.
This hotel is located just beside the entrance to the Jikokudani and is around 5 mins walk from the bus station crossing the onsen street. As I am travelling solo, thus the room I could get is western room and it looks like recently renovated. My room plan also included Japanese Kaiseki dinner which is good and buffet breakfast in the morning. Note that the hotel offer other room plan too, such as Japanese room with dinner serving in a restaurant or in room. There are also plan for buffet dinner too. Even without meal plan for your room, the hotel does have other restaurants or you could always find something at the onsen street. This hotel has a very big onsen bath overlooking the Jikokudani: Grand Bath with 5 different spring waters and a total of 35 different baths for male and female, indoor and outdoor. There is also a pool for kids under the grand bath. For onsen lover, this is indeed an onsen paradise, which I have spent about 1 hr+ X 2 visits! This is definitely a great hotel for onsen lover!

This is the eighth hot spring hotel I visited. The appearance of the hotel is really beautiful. I really like the food here. It's the Japanese feeling I like. Beds and rooms are also comfortable. The only sad thing is that the hot spring is not isolated and the body temperature drops in an instant, which is uncomfortable. On the contrary, hot springs in Switzerland are much hotter than here.

Given that Takinoya is widely regarded as not only the top luxury ryokan in Noboribetsu but one of the best in all of Hokkaido, and considering what they charge for the privilege of staying there, we went in expecting a sublime overall experience. While we had a good stay, it wasn't a perfect or even a particularly memorable one. Hokkaido is on of the world's top seafood locales (if not the best), and we were looking forward to trying out what Takinoya would cook up - especially since we've been to (and dined at) awesome places in Hokkaido before that were far less expensive. On the food front, Takinoya did not stand out from the pack. It was good... some of it great... but the seafood did not strike us as being out of the ordinary (by Hokkaido standards, mind you.) Some of them were surprisingly mediocre, such as the Buri (Japanese Amberjack), which is a wonderfully flavorful (and fully of umami-laden and healthy fish fat/oil), which almost felt like it came to us previously frozen (and not fresh.) And apart from a few minor novelties (foam soy sauce, which was actually pretty good), the creativity of the cuisine was also lacking. We were sorely disappointed that Uni (Sea Urchin) was nowhere to be found for the two nights we were at Takinoya. Hokkaido is considered THE best place in the world for top-notch Uni, and it was not served to us once. The property itself is located just steps away from Jigokudani (地獄谷 - Hell's Valley), the top destination in the area, along with Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼), Oku no Yu (奥の湯) & Oyunumagawa Natural Foot Bath (大湯沼川天然足湯), which are also close by (and worth the hike to get there on foot if you have the time and energy - the hiking is very nice. While Takinoya's property grounds are not as expansive as some other world-class ryokans in Japan, what's there is pretty nice.... There's just not enough of it to occupy more than 10-15 minutes of one's time in the garden. We stayed in a "Japanese Suite DW"-type room, which is a hybrid Western & Japanese suite that features both a dining room with table and chairs, a Japanese style room, as well as a bedroom with real Western beds. It was reasonably spacious by Suite standards at 92m². Curiously, Takinoya does not have a Presidential Suite (or equivalent) type of room for those that want the ultimate bling factor. Either way, the DW-type Suite should satisfy even the most demanding luxury traveller, unless they're sharing the room with a ton of family members or friends. One highlight of Takinoya (and Noboribetsu in general) has to do with the quality of the onsen (hot springs water.) It smells like onsen - as soon as you're in the vicinity of Noboribetsu, you really can smell the sulfur of the hot springs. This is also true of the natural onsen water that was fed directly into our in-room open-air onsen bath. I'm not sure of its health benefits, but either way, you definitely won't feel cheated like at some ryokans in other places that mix the onsen water with normal water (or include additives to the onsen water.) Service overall was a mixed bag. At such a highly rated and expensive establishment at Takinoya, you kind of expect the vaunted "Omotenashi" hospitality that Japan is known for, especially in top ryokans. Sadly, at Takinoya this wasn't the case. Meals were served in our own room (which we really like), but our butleress(?), while not rude in any way, was robotic and formulaic in her approach. She said most of the right things, but did it in a way that displayed experience rather than genuine warmth. She fell down in two ways... 1) When she came into our dining area to set up the table for dinner, I asked her to set it up in the Japanese area (we like sitting on the floor when having kaiseki cuisine), to which she stoically said "that is not possible." Umm, okay. Later in the meal, while I was setting up the dishes in a way that would make for a great meal photo, she commented that a particular dish should not be placed where it is. The dish in question was quite large and tall, and given where the tripod was set up, the dish would have blocked the view of the smaller dishes behind it. Even after telling her that, she said that it's not how it's done in Japan. Maybe she felt more comfortable in telling me that because I am of Japanese descent and am fluent in the language. Either way.... to me, it was really snide and petty of her to behave in that manner. The second "Omotenashi" shortcoming had to do with our desire to visit the museum in the newly-opened Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park (ウポポイ民族共生象徴空間.) It's a large, beautiful and amazingly appropriate place to preserve and demonstrate the Ainu culture and history, but we were unaware of it since it was new and I generally research things on English sites (even then, not many Japanese knew about it.) What made things worse was the limit they were placing on the number of visitors to the museum due to COVID-19 - it was advance online reservation only. I asked the staff at the front desk whether there was anything they could do to help us get a reservation over the next two days, and they immediately said "no, you'll have to look it up and reserve on your own." Now, it might be asking too much for staff members at a small ryokan to pull some strings, but at least they could've shown a bit more interest in our time in Noboribetsu, and maybe do some research on their side? It turned out okay for us at the end (no thanks to Takinoya) - while we were unable to tour the museum, many of the other attractions Upopoy were open to the public, and we were able to see two performances, see a re-creation of a traditional Ainu village and see some demonstrations of the old Ainu way of life. Overall, we had a great time in Noboribetsu. And we had a comfortable stay at Takinoya. However, I wouldn't say that Takinoya itself was a notable highlight, especially given our sky-high expectations.

The building has seen better days, and to say it’s shabby and outdated is an understatement. It’s gloomy and grim throughout. The only concession to the 21st century is an internet connection. The bed with its sharp springs poking through is one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever had to sleep on. I presume that in the 1960s or 70s it was in the cheap-and-cheerful category, but now it’s neither. The only dinner they have on offer is a 3,000 yen buffet which is worth about 1,000 yen at most. (All restaurants in the town are still closed due to Covid.) I’d booked for two nights, but checked out after one. Noboribetsu Onsen itself is a charmless, concrete place appealing mainly to the Japanese over-70s, but if you do decide to come here, try a different lodging.

This is a must do if you are traveling to Hokkaido; the experience was simply amazing! Plus, hospitality offered to us were top notch though they speak minimal English. We landed at the New Chitose airport, and was adviced by the airport info counter to take a Donan direct bus to Noboribetsu (it’s supposedly the cheaper option ¥1400 per person, and the easiest way to get to our destination). We were stopped at the Noboribetsu bus stop, and the ryokan is approx 15 mins walk. We checked in quite swiftly and were taken to our room. On our way to the room, the lady showed us the public bath area and also gave us an explanation of the place. Room came with a heater, and an open space which was supposedly our dining and also sleeping area. Our room came with another small bedroom with 2 single beds but we opted to sleep at the other room on the tatami. Everything we needed for the “bath” was provided to us in our room. We were served 2 meals (dinner and breakfast), options of timing were given to us and a lady will come knock on our room to bring us our meals. The food was delicious and very traditional! We enjoyed every single element of it. The public bath is open 24 hours, except between 9- 9:30pm whereby it’s closed for cleaning. This ryokan also has an outdoor bath which I strongly urge for anyone to try it. Though the weather was cold but the hot spring just balance out the cold and hot. And sitting outdoor with the fresh air and the greens just give it a different experience all together. Just about 10- 15 mins walk is the Shikotsu-toya National Park.
