Very rude manager and owner who doesn’t care about customers. I had to cancel because of an ill family member. I had booked without a refund, but asked if there was anything we could do, like maybe postpone the visit to another time but there was zero space for coulance. While being in their right it doesn’t make this owner less of an .... Don’t stay here.

We are a hotel with 15 double rooms near the centre of Monschau. The house is 400 years old and the old wine cellar still exists. Now it is a restaurant and we have room for 60 people. We cooperate with other hotels, so that we can offer you rooms for more than 60 people. Of course all the rooms do have standard: shower, toilet, telephone and TV.
We arrived just as the flood had hit the neighbouring areas. Our booking was made long before and the destination chosen for closeness to both Aachen and mountain walks. Very serviceminded staff. The room was on 2nd floor with no elevator, but fine for us. Small family run operation by former ballet stars.

The nice things first: The welcome was nice. The hotel is very clean and hygienic. The breakfast buffet was very good. The town is absolutely pictoresque with a gorgeous church right across the street. Wi-fi was very decent. As for everything else: when we had to ring the hotel to inform them we were running late, we had to call three times before somebody answered the phone. When we arrived the reception was closed and I do mean CLOSED with an iron curtain. We had to go to the bar to get the bartender to man the reception. The rooms are adequeta but no more that that. The beds are narrow, neither the duvet nor the pillows were very good and the mattresses are too soft. The showers are so narrow you need to go through the doors sideways. And the light switches are an absolute mystery - every time you needed to turn on a light, you had no idea which switch would be correct. But by far the worst of all: the hotel is LOUD!! You can hear a mouse fart on a different floor. If somebody talks anywhere in the hotel, you can hear it clearly in my room. When people walked up and down the stairs, it sounded like a stampede. My radiator - although completely turned off - made loud metallic clangs at random (very efficient if you need to stay awake!). Everything outside the rooms is tiled without a hint of carpet, so every single sound is reflected, and all doors have absolutely zero insulation or rubber padding, so all sounds in the entire hotel reach your room without even having to try. I hardly got a minute's sleep the first night. The second night I was wise enough to use powerful ear plugs. When we wanted to check out the last morning there was actually someone at the reception(!) A guy was working on a computer. I said: "Hi, I'd like to check our of room so-and-so." "I need four or five minutes." Oh, do you?!?! Well, then I will just wait until you feel like interrupting what you're doing to deal with a customer, who might be in a hurry to catch a train for all you know! That's just downright rude and it settled my valuation at 2/5. The price was a ridiculous €200 a night. I would say half that amount would be a fair price. I'm definitely not coming back.

Stayed in the two bedroom "apartment" with kids. Clean, great location, and great service. Parking was 500m away in P4 - family inexpensive. View was awesome. Kids were happy. We were also! Will return.

The Michel & Friends Hotel Monschau is a hotel surrounded by hiking and cycling trails in the idyllic Eifel, just 3.1 miles from the Belgian border. Treat yourself to a break and explore the Eifel National Park with its picturesque lakes and forests. The city centre of Monschau is also a little walk away within 5 minutes.
The hotel is very large but almost completely without character. We are used to staying at a German hotel about 2/3 of the price and about four times better and more interesting. This was more of an up-scale hostel. Reception took ages to process our booking and the one before us. Looks like the hotel is designed for coach parties who want something spartan, anonymous and forgettable. Probably also to eat in town. There is a suggested menu in reception, but when I went to the restaurant just after 8pm there was absolutely no one. I went to have a look at the pool/sauna and met two ladies trying fruitlessly to get in by using their room key. We all gave up. Breakfast is OK, but basic. Rather overpriced for what it is. Just on the outside of town but an easy walk into the centre. Michel needs to get together with his friends and make the hotel more characterful. Definitely not four stars. 2.5?

Genießen Sie Ihren Urlaub vom ersten Tag an.
We overnighted in between hikes and - as we didn’t have unrealistically high expectations (it was after all the cheapest hotel available) I can honesty say we found it good value. The location could hardly be better - at the quieter end of the main drag, perfectly at home among the surrounding chocolate box quaintness and within easy walking distance of everything (or less than easy climb up to the hill to the panoramic viewing points) The decor is traditional, if perhaps a tad dated. Our 2nd floor double room was “cosy” but big enough. The shower room & sink area were bit cramped, but adequate. The large central heating radiator was a welcome bonus - especially with temperatures just below zero and hike effected jeans & socks to dry! All in all, nothing fancy, but equally nothing to complain about, other than the less than stable WiFi connection. We knew before that we would be sharing a toilet with 3 or 4 other rooms on our floor, but you pay for what you get (and we got what we paid for). Breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant downstairs was (again) nothing fancy, but more than adequate. Nice to have coffee & tea served to us in our own separate little pots, rather than having to help ourselves. The ladies who served us were efficient & friendly, with the emphasis on the former. One thing prospective guests might want to note is that - unless the restaurant is open for business - there’s effectively NO reception, so don’t expect to be shown to your room or receive handy tourists tips etc. As for Monschau itself ... It’s an extremely picturesque little town, with a river running through it, steep hills & stairways in the outer circles of the town and almost impossibly picture perfect, quaint historical houses scattered all around. In our case, for what it’s worth, we found it just a little bit too touristy for our taste - as if it was trying too hard instead of being its natural self. But perhaps I’m being overly cynical. As town’s go it’s truly DDG! One curious thing you might want to note is that everywhere (this applied to the restaurant currently #1 on Trip Advisor, as well as the baker & both gift shops we went to) they only accept payment in cash.

I am so pleased we found Der Kleine Globetrotter - housed within a traditional town house, complete with winding stairs and original features, we were very well looked after. The proprietor speaks excellent English - having lived for many years in New Zealand - and was extremely helpful. We stayed in the Shanghai Room (each room is fashioned in homage to a world city), which was spacious, clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice. We would highly recommend this place!!!

I want so badly to leave a 4 but it would be misleading to others. We had a great stay! Our expectations were low. We expected to share at bathroom but didn’t! The good: Room was spotless! Super clean! The beds were comfortable. We had a beautiful view. It’s quiet. We had our own toilet in the hall and didn’t have to share. Breakfast was nice. The staff (maybe owners) were kind and spoke English. The location was perfect! Not so great: Our toilet was in the hall but it was private. The parking was a bit of a walk on cobble stone but everyone has to park outside the city. The hotel does need some repairs. The internet never worked for us. We certainly overpaid. Overall we found it to be an excellent choice for a one night stay to see the Christmas markets.

Recommended by local residents. Good prices for large amounts of fabulous food. Steaks were perfectly grilled. Salad bar had good choices. Appetizers were HUGE portions. Decent wine selection. We ordered a whole bottle of a type listed for by the glass purchase. No room for dessert. Can eat inside or outside. Plenty of parking. Hotel area seems to be more than adequate from the outside. Would investigate lodging there for our next visit to the area.
