Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an important point between the old and new worlds. The laid-back city owes much of its historical prominence to "white gold," Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures, wine and crafts. Top spots to visit include the open Worker's Market, Blandy's Wine Lodge and the Sacred Art Museum. Friendly locals, walkable streets and cheap taxis make the city easy to get around.

The Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see at the foot of The Cliff Bay which is perched on the top of a natural promontory. The hotel is surrounded by gardens with innumerable secluded corners and centenary palm trees extending to the very edge of the cliff face. The panorama is completed by a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal to the left of the hotel. The most influential restaurant guide in the world, the Michelin Guide, has awarded a star to Il Gallo d'Oro, The Cliff Bay's gourmet restaurant run by Chef Benoît Sinthon. This is Madeira's first and only star
Super hotel, friendly staff, delicious breakfast. The spa facilities were excellent and the whole experience was wonderful. The poolside areas were kept extremely clean and there were plenty of sun beds in different areas to choose from. Would highly recommend.

After 2 years of trying to stay at Savoy due to covid restrictions we were booked to stay luckily during the flower festival week. The room was amazing, the staff were helpful and professional and the grounds and pool were fantastic. This is a beautiful hotel and well worth a visit if you are planning to stay in Funchal. Plenty of good local restaurants and a short walk into town for an even bigger choice.

Porto Santa Maria lies at the water's edge in the very heart of Funchal's old centre. Its close relationship to the sea, the outstanding and exclusive views over the harbour where the cruise ships dock, its picturesque surroundings and the unique flavours of its cuisine result in genuine urban tranquility. A congenial hotel offering 146 rooms, restaurant, bars, direct access to the promenade, outdoor pool, indoor pool, SPA, gym, parking...all in the heart of the city.
From the position of the hotel situated in the old town to the quality of the rooms, the facilities, the food and the staff, I could not fault anything. We stayed at this hotel about 12 years ago and the quality is exactly as we remembered it - wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Thank you to everyone involved in making the quality of the hotel just perfect.

Great location and excellent food. We stayed half board and were able to change to other meal options when we wanted too. This proved to be really good value. The 2 pool side evening meals were really special and the staff couldn't do enough for you.

With its reputation for excellence and discreet service, Belmond Reid's Palace is the ideal place at which to relax and be pampered.
Reid's is so friendly and relaxing, it's position over looking Funchal and the harbour is amazing especially at night with all the street and house lights lighting up the hillside, sitting on the terrace with late night drinks cannot be matched. The staff are so friendly and helpful no request was to much.

Great hotel- loved the views and thought the location was ideal for access to restaurants, taxis, Funchal town. Would recommend. Breakfast can get a little repetitive but the pool was nice and quiet. We were staying on the 10th floor, more than one tiny elevator would be better as there was often long waits to get in and out of the hotel. The rooftop bar was stunning!

The Pestana Royal is an All Inclusive hotel (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and domestic beverages) located in Funchal, Madeira. It sits 2 minutes on foot from Formosa beach, the city's largest beach, with panoramic views of the Cabo Girão hillside, 10 minutes from Funchal’s city centre (by car). During your stay, you can enjoy 2 outdoor swimming pools, an open-air solarium, a SPA with indoor swimming pool, gym and 3 treatment rooms where you can book you Magic SPA treatment/massage. The youngsters can have fun at the Kid's Club, while the adults play pool, mini golf or use the tennis court. The hotel offers 4 restaurants (1 open buffet for all meals and 3 themed restaurants), promenades and 2 bars. All of them have a very relaxed atmosphere, this being one of the main features of this resort. All rooms offer pleasant views, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.
Let's start with the good things: The room was nice (paid for a sea view), the bed was fine and we had no bother getting a sun bed, even when rocking up at 1030. I liked the clientel - mostly French, Portuguese, UK and German. A mix of age groups and not too many kids. Now for the rest..... Firstly, I agree - it is not 5 star standard. I'm always happy with all inclusive as I usually like local wine and beer - the alcohol at this hotel was not at all enjoyable. I did like how bottles of water were freely available however. I also agree that the staff are miserable, particularly at the front desk. There was one lady who was nice, others were rude and sarcastic. For anybody who suggests that the restaurant is suitable for vegeterian and vegan, I would ask how they figured this out? The food is not always labelled, and when it is it says something like "pasta" rather than the ingredients. There are no vegetarian or vegan signs and no idea what the ingredients are. For example "vegetable soup" - made with chicken stock perhaps? Once I went to have the "pasta with tomato" and found the main ingredient to be Tuna! The chickpea curry had shrimp in it too. Special meals can be reserved - we were allowed two. The "Aisan Night" was sold out upon our arrival so didn't get to try that. The pizza night we did book but it was so disappointing - a massive cheese fest which took an hour to arrive, with some weird black sawdust on the base. The dining hall is a nightmare. The tables are so close together and there is one small counter to get hot food, whilst salad and bread are separate. Masks are not required and the hand sanitiser was empty for 5 days of the 8 we stayed. People make their way in through a passage in the middle of the tables and are constantly gawping at what each other are eating whilst coughing. In the end we came only for breakfast (go early) and avoided all other meals. With that and the avoidance of the disgusting alcohol, there was not much point in being all inclusive. I won't be coming back to Madeira based on this one trip to this one hotel. I would advise anybody who's considering coming here to pack a mask for all communal areas, but mainly, if you have dietary requirements.... DON'T BOTHER.
