Great Location!

I'd been to Fukui City before and this time, I wanted something a bit more scenic and central. We got a Superior Double Room with a river view. It was furnished wonderfully and was very comfortable. Breakfast service was a great addition and delicious. Front staff were helpful and welcoming. My only complaint is the walls are a bit thin and we were able to hear the room next to us have conversations and people down the hall's noisy children which killed the mood.

A Totally Japanese Experience

Reviewed By Aeroboffin

We arrived by train at Awara-Onsen station. From there we took a taxi to the hotel which took about 15 minutes. There is also a hotel shuttle bus which runs a scheduled service. Apparently it is also possible to call and arrange a pick-up, but as we did not speak Japanese, we took a taxi. We arrived at the hotel about 1pm but it was not possible to check-in until 3pm. So we left our bags and took a taxi to Tojinbo on the coast. The taxi to Tojinbo took about 20 minutes and cost 4,200 Yen. The sightseeing boat to view the cliffs cost 1,400 Yen each. A boat departed every few minutes. Very worthwhile. The cliffs are not massive but interesting to see. There is also a tower on the top of the cliffs which provides good views. The cost to ascend the tower was 500 Yen each. One reason that check-in takes place at 3pm is that the staff greet the visitors. A lady dressed in kimono took us to our room, made us a cup of tea and explained the features of the room. There was good AC, good Wi-Fi and a TV (which we did not turn on), The room was quiet and large. Our room also had a kitchen area, bath/shower room and separate lavatory. Of course the onson is the main reason that most people go to the hotel/resort. On the weekend that we stayed, it was a holiday weekend and there were many groups of people who went to the onson together. So it was busy and lively at times. The onson is divided into male and female sections. If there are facilities for couples to share an onson, we did not find that. It would be worthwhile when selecting a hotel for a couples weekend, to make sure that private onsons were available. Some hotels have them in each bedroom. On the second day we took the hotel shuttle bus to Awara-Onsen railway station and from there took a bus to Maruoka Castle. We bought a daily bus pass which cost 1,000 Yen each. There was also a festival taking place in the town. The stairs to the castle are steep, and to climb to the upper levels of the castle the staircase is more like a ladder. (Not for people who are not so steady on their feet)!! We ate in 2 different restaurants in the hotel as we stayed 2 nights. The food and service in both was excellent. The staff explained to us what each dish was and we tried everything. They could not have been more attentive and helpful. An evening entertainment was provided at extra cost. It was a kind of Las Vegas show. The gentlemen (sorry ladies) put on a great show. This was enhanced by members of the audience who had possibly drunk a little more alcohol than was good for them, spontaneously joining in with the performance. We also had a 60 minute in-room massage. This cost 6,000 Yen each. Also note that Kanazawa is less than 1 hour away by train. An interesting city with a fantastic castle and gardens. Well worth spending a day there!! In summary, we loved our 2 nights at Matsuya Sensen. The staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. I think that we were the only western people staying there and not too familiar with the Japanese way of doing things. The staff were very patient with us. When we left, several staff came to wave-off the bus with their handkerchiefs. Thank you staff of Matsuya Sensen, If we are ever in the region again, we hope to see you again!!

A economic chain hotel that owns its parking place. Clean room and bed, but room space is as small as average. The payment is made by the kiosk, and its English interface needs a little more improvement (in translation). The breakfast is mostly Japanese cuisine, but the western cuisine is just bread, jam, and coffee.

2 day, 2 night stay at Harvest Hotel ( Ski Jam Katsuyama)

Reviewed By Nn3388

We did a big detour from our roadtrip in Osaka / Kyoto and spend 2 days and 2 nights at the Harvest Hotel in early March, 2014. A big thanks to Kuroda-san at the reception to help us book the hotel package as this hotel doesn't really let you book at discount websites, travel agents. Even when we went on the hotel's own website, there was hardly any information or hotel rooms bookable in English. Some Pros (1) the hotel is truly ski-in ski-out (2) we paid under $1300 per head per night, this includes 1 day ski pass, buffet breakfast, and awesome buffet dinner, which isn't a huge steal but is still pretty cheap compared to say Niseko or Hakuba (3) the rooms unlike typical Japan hotels are HUGE and most actually can fit 4 with 2 single beds and 2 sofa beds (4) the crab hotpot special dinner, which you can order for dinner at a premium is realy really good and value for money (5) the ski resport reception, rest area, lockers, restaurants, ski hire, ski school are al in adjacent building (6) during the 48 hours we were there we saw only TWO foreigners the whole time, to me this is a great plus, feeling a true "get away". Some Cons (2) it is primarily a family resort ie LOTS of kids (2) don't expect the staff to speak very good english, its all very trial and error (3) there is 1300 yen toll road charge if you drive like we did (4) they are super strict with checkin/out times forget about asking for 1 hr delay (5) you have to share the onsen with pay-per-visit non hotel guests (6) the hotel was around 3-4 drive from Osaka, not exactly close (7) the snow conditions is still not as good as the traditional areas in Nagano or Hokkaido.

The only drawback is that the hotel car park is located in mins walk from hotel, and was full. Anyway, there are other car parks around the hotel which roughly charge the same fee.

This place is perfect for the trip that you would like to have time to stop by and take some break. We went there from Nagoya , but you can actually go there from Kyoto, Osaka or Tokyo. The most impressive for me is not just a place but the service from the staff. They tried so hard to serve what we requested and asked for. If you pay with dinner, please prepare your stomach because there are 9 courses with good quality of food. The place was nice as clean. it's walkable from Awara station. you can get the bus from Awara station to Tojinbo within 20 mins.

Great stay! Twin room recommended.

Reviewed By MunichEricJ

The hotel is a short 100m from the train station, you walk along but don’t even have to cross the small road leading to the hotel. The friendly staff checked me in to Room 713, a nice twin room on the top floor with views south and overlooking the station. There are warm wood tones and the feeling is pleasant. The bedding was very comfortable and the room was quiet. There was minimal noise from the station, even with the window opened. The work desk was large and there were lots of places to hang towels, shirts to air out, etc. The onsen was excellent. The bathroom is a standard biz hotel affair with one- piece counter / sink, compact tub / shower. Breakfast was very good, mostly Japanese style, well- prepared and tasty. The staff were great throughout, very helpful and eager to please. There are a lot of restaurants in the area, mostly Japanese – fish, yakitori, and so on. About a ten minute walk away are two Italian restaurants which looked really good, but they were booked up. A few days later I checked back in and got Room 603, a single. It was a lot smaller than the twin. IMO, the twin is worth the extra charge.

Lovely Hotel and Staff

We stayed for two nights in this Hotel, the staff were lovely, attentive and kind. The Hotel is very clean and modern. The Onsen is a very nice place to relax. Our room had a lovely view towards the sea. You can rent bikes from the hotel and ride to Sunset beach, I swam in the sea (Oct) and it was still warm. It's a surf beach and I think you can rent boards locally....maybe next time! Upon departure the manager presented us with a gift which was very thoughtful. Breakfast is a Japanese style buffet which was nice. The Hotel provides a minibus service to the local train station which is very useful. All in all, 10/10. If we come back I would defiantly stay here again.

Oedo Onsen Monogatari Awara

An interesting experience

Reviewed By Barbara M

We stayed one night at Oedo Onsen to participate in the onsen experience. We were a group of six, five of whom were Japanese nationals familiar with bathing in an onsen. As a shy westerner, having to be naked in front of others, friends and strangers, was a challenge and I recommend that travellers acquaint themselves with onsen procedures prior to your visit. We arrived mid-afternoon and after check-in could select a yukata to wear to and from the onsen and also at dinner. Guests leave the yukata in the room before they check out. The three males of the group were given a triple western style room with beds, shower and toilet. We females were allocated a traditional tatami room with three futons on the floor, a basin and toilet but no shower facilities. The onsen procedure: enter the spa area (separate for males and females), remove all of your clothes and put them in one of the baskets supplied. Make sure you bring your towel and face washer from your room. Enter the wet area only with your face cloth. You will not be allowed to wear bathers. Sitting on one of the little stools, wash yourself and your hair thoroughly. Only when clean should you enter the hot water of the spa. Relax. If you have the time, aim to spend a good hour in the water, perhaps changing from the inside bath to the one outside. When you are ready, you can rinse yourself off or just go straight back into the dressing room, retrieve your towel, dry yourself and get dressed. This spa has a wall of mirrors, hairdryers, brushes and creams for your use. According to my Japanese friends, the sign of a good spa is how smooth your skin feels afterwards. In this case, there was no difference, hence the average rating. Oedo Onsen has package deals which include a smorgasbord dinner and breakfast which is what we took. Dinner (90 minute limit) offered a wide choice of fish, sashimi and cooked, and a variety of other foods including salad, fruit and green tea ice cream. Drinks were alcoholic and non alcoholic. Breakfast catered to the Japanese palate but also offered western food. We booked a table tennis table for after dinner but when we arrived ready to play, found that our booking had been mishandled so we missed out. We did receive a call from reception later in the evening offering us a table, but by then it was too late for us. Oedo is a chain of onsen hotels. This review is only for the hotel in Awara. Your experience in another hotel in the chain might be different. If you have never been in an onsen, it's definitely worth trying. You will sleep very well afterwards.
