A great place to stay in Foshan

Reviewed By Sebastien G

The Sofitel in Foshan has a lot of good points: friendly staff, easy check in (despite all of the codes), a great bar on floor 11 and well appointed rooms. Breakfast is good and the Italian restaurant Allegria where I ate twice is very nice. We had a couple of small issues during our stay which is why I am not giving 5 stars. First the AC did not really work for 2 days as the temperature was preset at 25 degrees (could not be changed ) and because of communication issues this problem took more than it should have to get resolved. Some of the movies were not available. Maybe a TV channel in French (it is about living the French way) and one newspaper or magazine in English even China Daily would be a plus for non Chinese speaking guests.

Nice, but showing its age

Reviewed By travelworld1170

Happened to have an expiring IHG certificate, and needed to do a quick overnight in Foshan near the highway….so chose this over the slightly further new Crowne Plaza. Seeing this listed as a ten-plus year old hotel on Ctrip without a listed renovation, I was initially a bit hesitant - that’s getting up there. Upon arrival though it was fine, and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again - though given the price point you do wonder if a newer property like the Marriott just down the street or many other properties not too far away could be more reliable…. Pluses: - Well kept up overall - lobby, restaurant, and the room were of a certain style but in good shape. - Our 36th floor club room (free upgrade) had clearly been renovated in the last few years - bathroom was well-sized, furnishings good, and room didn’t feel especially aged like you will sometimes see of this era of hotel or older. Carpeting in good shape. Not sure how true this is for rooms on the other floors too - honestly if they haven’t been kept up to this similar sort of standard (even if smaller bathrooms or whatever) I wouldn’t be recommending staying here….there would have to be better options…. - Location next to the lake and near malls and highway is convenient - nice view to the park areas and good for an evening walk. Question marks: - Honestly in 2021 not having any sort of outlet next to both sides of the bed (it seemed like they had solved it for only one side) is getting pretty questionable…I’m ok reaching down to an outlet under a bedside table, but didn’t see any sign here. - Not sure the scent / cleaning solution they use on the rooms, but there was a somewhat weird / not entirely desirable / faintly musty scent when we first opened the room…not something you’d notice later, but not - The mattress had clearly seen better days, it was lumpy (even beyond the coverings) and not an especially great sleep. Softer than many in China, but lacking that much structure either. - Their website noted an electric car charging station, but it seemed there was only a Porsche one station unit (almost a sort of advertisement) outside the lobby and the hotel indicated it hadn’t worked for a while. Overall they have a fairly spacious underground garage - would be great to have more units given the number of electric cars in Guangdong these days.

Outstanding service received

While travel has been rather limited during the pandemic, we managed to visit Foshan for a business trip in May. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Anson Yang at the front desk. He helped us with check-in, brief introduction to the hotel (even provided us with a map of delicacies in Foshan), he even went extra miles to show us the room that we stayed in during our trip. He was very kind and helpful. In the executive lounge, we were greeted warmly by Kenton Ye. He was very helpful when we encountered problems with document printing. He assisted us every step of the way to get our things done in a professional manner. He listened attentively to the feedback that we have about our stays. We can see that he has done everything he could within his capacity to make our stay a pleasant one (and exceeds our expectations for sure). We are very happy with our stay here and will definitely come back again in the future :)

Room for improvement

Unfortunately we had a not so pleasant stay at the hotel , on arrival we were given a room and once confirmed they told us there is a some construction so be prepared so we said ok and went to our rooms , the room was nice and clean but the Bathroom was outdated and mouldy, just feels unclean, we decided to suck it up and just let it go until we were woken up with hydraulic drills the next day for hours and this was unacceptable ,once I complained they instantly changed my room with an upgrade which we were delighted with. This then brings me to the buffet breakfast it was lovely but let down by the fact that I picked up 6 butters and 3 of them were used ones that have been placed back into the pile and chilled, unfortunately the 3rd one was so bad it had mould growing out of it and I wasn’t quick enough to take a picture , I complained to 2 members of staff and they just gave me some new butter. ( I hope the hotel learns from this and inspects the butter before serving it to people and stops people / staff from placing butter back into the pile) some other things that was a bit of a let down was that the hotel bar closes at 9:30 which I think is way too early. Good points are that the hotel suites were lovely and clean , staff speak English and are welcoming and the location is great for seeing Foshan sights and room service was lovely too.

Old…Tired…Dark

Reviewed By travelworld1170

If you have a reason to be in this part of Foshan and you’re really a Hilton loyalist….sure, this place is fine enough. But for anyone else - this hotel just feels tired and probably not worth the price. You can tell when a place just isn’t being kept up - coming up from the parking garage the elevator panel is banged up, the floor area chipped, etc. And when you walk in a dramatic lobby and half the lights are off - well, it feels more like a Chinese train station than what should be a nicer than average hotel that you’re paying more to stay at at. HHonors Diamond (courtesy of US credit card; not a real Hilton loyalist) status treatment was good - a suite upgrade and lounge access. Lounge was the busiest part of the hotel I saw - a pretty good sized selection of appetizers and pretty standard lower-shelf alcohol and drinkable white white. Also seemed like a large enough space too. Overall the hotel felt fairly large - that may just have been though our suite at the very end of the dark hallways. The suite itself was a two room two bathroom setup. One of the more unexpected parts was a Little Swan washer in the master bathroom - haven’t seen that before (nor did we try to use it). There was no desk though which was a bit inconvenient as I had to work - just awkward and somewhat old feeling loveseat and chairs in the living room area. As a 7 year old hotel there was also a bit of a power plug shortage - sorry but in 2021 I really don’t want to have to unplug the alarm clock or random lamp in order to plug in my power cord. Carpet also felt tired - just not the most pleasant or cleanish. Breakfast was disappointing, though I was there early. The bread was clearly stale, the lights were only half on, and no effort was made (despite many servers and other setting up the buffet still) to offer me any sort of beverage. There was lots of theming setup from some sort of Malaysian lunch/dinner buffet they must have been doing, but it didn’t help with the breakfast - which in the first place seemed on the smaller side (more than enough, just not as massive) compared to other 2nd/3rd tier city major Western brand hotels. Overall, I wouldn’t come back here. We have stayed at the even older Intercontinental further north in Foshan previously, and even that felt better. I may look to some of the options closer to Lingan Tiandi, or other areas with convent options around. Even the four star sort of options might feel fresher. The Hilton is part of a complex with a CR Vanguard grocery store and some restaurants around, but nothing particularly nice we saw at quick glance. And otherwise - this hotel just feels like it has seen better days.
