Yunzhong Inn is a family-style boutique hotel with traditional Chinese courtyard buildings and exceptional facilities. It is a quiet stay within walking distance to Datong's must-see atractions including the Huayan Monastery, Nine-dragon wall, Mosque, Chunyang Palace, Drum Tower, Shanhua Temple, Guandi Temple, Wen Temple and other historical sites.
Highly recommended gorgeous boutique hotel tastefully decorated to the little detail. It is built in a traditional Chinese courtyard style. The rooms are spacious and have all amenities that one would expect from a good hotel. The breakfast was a mix of Chinese and Western, and nicely served in the courtyard restaurant. The location of the hotel is excellent, right in the center of Datong old town, and within 5 to 10 minute walking distance to all attractions in the old town. Various good restaurants are just a few meters away. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, always super attentive and quickly assisting us with anything we needed. We really enjoyed our stay at Yunzhong and the only regret was that we had to leave after our two nights there.

For location, this place is right in the Old City, just outside the locked gates of the Mosque. Essentially a quick walk for you anywhere in the Old City. Pros: Owner and staff were very friendly, breakfast was standard Chinese fare, but enough there for foreigners. Place was clean, well laid out, and well decorated. Rooms are basic, but clean and have everything you need, even the mattress was not the normal concrete one you would expect to find. Cons: Windows are not double paned insulated, so expect to hear some noises from the street outside. Non smoking room, but this being China, that is just a suggestion, you can smell smoke in the room from the hallway, and there is a slight smokie smell in the room, not overpowering by any means like some places I’ve been, but this is China in a smaller city, it is perfectly normal. I tried booking through their website, and got an email back saying the price was 498RMB per night, plus 149RMB agency fee. The payment was to be through Alipay, WeChat or PayPal. I didn’t understand why I had to pay 149RMB if I was using WeChat, so I cancelled my booking and had my Chinese friend book and pay for the room for me. Through my friend the room was 468RMB per night, with no agency fee. This is Datong, it is not Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu, and this place does not pretend to be a 5-star International Hotel. It is a solid 3.5-star. I would have no issue going back to this place again, or recommending it to anyone looking to visit the area. Get a Chinese friend to book the room for you, unless you want to pay extra money.

This hotel doesn't welcome foreigners any more. Unfortunately, I was told that when I reached the reception only. It's unclear whether this ban is related to Covid or not. But anyway, although I had as proper reservation, I could not stay there and had to find another place at the last minute. I regret nor the hotel website neither any reservation website mentioned that.

We stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is tired and not in any way charming. The staff were brusque. The room was small for 3 of us , hot and the air conditioner didn’t work. Its not really close to anything ( although we did walk back from dinner- about 30 minutes). Breakfast was so-so. Stay somewhere else.

Friendly english speaking staff welcome to hotel make me feel comfortable at fitsr step in hotel. Room was ordinary , nothing to complaint. It was also properly cleaned . Breakfast was more Chinese style with a bit western food and no fork and knive available. Real coffee was also avaialble (no spoon to stirr sugar on it)

For a one night stay this place was fine. Rooms are more akin to European private hostel rooms than hotel rooms but the bed was comfortable, shower had good water pressure and it was fairly clean. Breakfast was an extra 18rmb and really worth it. For the price there was a surprisingly good selection of Chinese style breakfast foods and fruit and yoghurt if you wanted something more Western.

Location wise, nothing much around it except a minimart just beside it & walk a bit further, there's a bigger supermarket. Opposite the hotel across the road is a local open air market selling mainly vegetables & fruits. After returning from a walk, was startled to find a small packet, containing 2 chrysanthemum flower & a few rock sugar, left on my room's bar counter. Was later advised by other group members (who stayed in their rooms) that it was given by the hotel staff. Apparently, knowing that no-one is in the room, the staff let himself/herself in & left it behind. A nice gesture but I don't think it's appropriate entering the room for any other reasons besides housekeeping. The strange part is my family members didn't receive the packet. Was told aircon is centralized thus unable to set own temperature, can get a bit stuffy at night, Breakfast is local Chinese style. It seems like the hotel has different breakfast area for those with tour groups & those FIT. As I was with tour group, the one I had is local Chinese style, unsure if there's any difference if you're an independent traveller.

Facility is still relatively new with modern comfort you can find, far much better than local Chinese hotel standard. Room was huge and cosy. You have everything you need, a bath tub (if you have time), high pressure shower with cold water and hot water, two mini bottles of water (can be bigger), amenities such as shower bath gel, shampoo, hand lotion, shaver, toothbrush, a comb etc. They also provide laundry service, a shoe horn, safe box, mini bar (on request with price) free tea and coffee bag, water kettle, hugh plasma tv with limited local channel. Breakfast selection was abundance and enough for day starter, most selections with traditional breakfast, also they served coffee and tea with creamer! Location in city center outside the city wall but you can go everywhere easy by didi (chinese grab). Overall good hotel!

Modern and big luxurious hotel. I stayed there for 1 night. Very comfortable beds and very clean bathroom. I had there the buffet for dinner. That was really great. Inclusive drinks : 98 ¥. Also the breakfast was excellent. 2 minor points : the staff is not polite and sometimes rude. Especially the lady at the reception. They also don’t speak or understand English. The WiFi is very bad and almost not working.

I stayed here for two weeks in September. My room faced east, with great views from the 7th floor across rooftops to the mountains. Unfortunately this meant the room also got quite warm in the morning because the air conditioning did not work - it just blew room temperature air right back at me. However, with the window open at night, it was a very pleasant temperature and I slept well. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend earplugs, as the streets are noisy all night (and day). Big, cool foyer, and attached restaurant. People do smoke in one area of the foyer, which is unfortunate, but then people smoke pretty much everywhere in China (I'm not used to this anymore, as smoking is so restricted here in Australia). The restaurant has a wide selection of food for breakfast and dinner. It doesn't change much though, so if you are staying for a while you are likely to get bored. If you are an English speaker you will no doubt find the food labels amusing as the translations are "interesting". I recommend the hotpot for dinner, where you can cook your own fresh ingredients in a little boiling bowl of stock, right at your table. You can ask for fresh meat for this (it's not kept out on the buffet) and also bowls of rice (as there is no rice out either). Beds are very hard, but surprisingly I still slept well. THe bathroom was large and more than adequate. You may find that your room is without a fridge - if this is the case, ask for one at the front desk. I did, and one was brought to my room that day. Same with iron and ironing board. I found that a few claims on their website were not quite true: front desk staff spoke no English; no fridges in rooms; no laundry service. If you need a laundry, turn left out of the hotel door and walk about 2 blocks, there is one on the left. Western prices though. Many small "supermarkets" in the area where you can get snacks and drinks. Local bus to Yungang Grottoes departs from nearby - cost at time of writing was only 3 Yuan. Overall, comfortable stay. Rooms are a bit tatty but large. Ask for one on a high floor for maximum airflow and views.
