Lovely stay

Reviewed By Graeme T

Stayed one night for partners birthday, the overall stay was excellent, just one small thing the Sunday lunch was three prices, £8 £12 or £14 we both opted for the £12 which was nice but not a lot, I only got one piece of roast beef, not very big, but my partner got three slices of roast pork, plus cauliflower cheese of which I didn’t get ? but breakfast was nice and overall stay was peaceful and would stay again.

Pricey drinks, mediocore food

Reviewed By jack-mx2

Stopped by for a meal and drinks, a tad on the expensive side at nearly £6 a pint. Food was mediocore, for example the roasted root veg looked like something from the freezer threw in the microwave, margherita pizza was more like tomatoe sauce on a pizza base. May have been as it was a busy saturday afternoon, but paying top prices you would expect better, good atmosphere created by the clientele on this particular day.

Welcoming and helpful

Reviewed By Alick M

Arrived very wet with an equally wet Springer (& small backpacks - I asked & was told notice was ancient and we’d be very welcome inside with whatever pack we had) in search of (a) a taxi recommendation & (b) a pint each. Both Lee & Fran lovely and very helpful as we dripped our way to a table with welcome pints and waited just 15 minutes for a taxi back to Water Yeat (from Bluebird - on time & £20, saving a 4 hour walk)

Lovely pub, great location

Reviewed By sophietravelbug

This was a great pub to stay the night in and to have dinner at. The publicans were lovely and welcoming, the room I stayed in was spacious and clean. It was nice and quiet too to get a good night’s sleep. The breakfast was also very nice and the hotel staff were very accommodating and helpful. The room had a nice bath but there is no fridge in the room. The location is sensational, it is directly across the road from the bus stop which was very handy as I came to Coniston without a car. I recommend staying here and dining in or having a beer outside. Enjoy!

Be aware

Reviewed By stephenburke52

The Sun Inn was the first venue our walking group stayed at when it formed 35 years ago. As this was the last time the group was to visit the Lake District it was the natural choice. We arrived at one, having driven five hours. The plan was to lunch and have hot drinks before walking. Only to be told the establishment had no chef and was not serving lunches or dinners. Why had we not been told this in advance? Breakfast is served in the conservatory which is so hot its unbearable. Take sun glasses. I stayed in room 7. The curtains were hanging off the rail which I had to repair. The curtains are so thin, at 5.30 the room is filled with light and makes it impossible to sleep. On the last night our rooms were not made up. When asked about it I was told there was confusion over if the cleaner was to clean rooms that had not put out the sign " make up my room". Even those who had, did not have a clean room. The management told me I should have notified them that the room had not been cleaned. Difficult when getting back at 8 in the evening and the table for dinner in the pub next door was booked for 7.45. Funny the cleaner ( daughter of the manager) knew she had not cleaned the rooms. On the plus side the staff were amazing, worked very hard even though short handed. The management are happy to maximise the profits and watch the place go into decline.

Bring your earplugs!..

Fantastic location, helpful staff. If you’re booked into a shared room definitely bring some earplugs along with you. I was kept awake most of the night by three prolific snoring guests + a bout of phantom farting thrown in for good measure. Don’t forget your earplugs + Gasmask and you’ll be fine. Set in the heart of the Lake District in the village of Coniston we are a small guest house providing a warm welcome, comfortable rooms and a great breakfast. We also have two great self-catering apartments each of which has two bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathrooms. We are dog friendly (except the small double and one apartment - please check) and love having four-legged visitors. Our on-site car park means that guests don't have to worry about finding a space nearby, and because of our location often don't use their car during their stay. Our guests love watching the variety of birds which flock to our bird feeder.

The lcoation is just outside the village with panoramic views of the fells and the valley, surrounded by rolling fields and woods. To wake up to the glorious views made for a most relaxing and re-energising weekend. I would highly recommend and will most definitely be looking to stay again. ‘All That Glitters’……..

Reviewed By pete b

Firstly to clarify my wife and I enjoyed our break and the cottage was lovely and we did reflect this in the visitors book. However, the cottage is ‘connected’ to the tenant farmers’ accommodation so you can hear them ‘in conversation’ and ‘smell their cooking’ which distracts from your perceived privacy during the stay. Previous feedback has commented on ‘farm noise’ which there was very little of and it was quite pleasant when you could ‘hear’’ the animals. However there are lots of ‘comings and goings’ throughout the day….people calling at the butchers, various ‘seminars’ and ‘experience groups’ visiting throughout the week. An example of this would be on our last evening sitting in the garden with a glass of wine when an amateur theatrical group turn up and start getting dressed in costumes to start filming….so overall hardly secluded and private. I have stayed at ‘holiday inn express hotels’ where there is less ‘going on’ and have been more ‘relaxed’. With this in mind I would preferably pay far less to stay somewhere more ‘commercial’ where you at least understand what you’re ‘paying for’. The cottage is beautiful with very good facilities e.g. bathrooms/showers etc but I think you would be hard pushed to ‘comfortably accommodate’ six people in the lounge or cater for this number with the kitchen. The ‘fly in the ointment’ for us was when we were informed that decking would be removed and replaced in the ‘hot tub’ area at the side of the cottage. You don’t fully grasp the impact this would have until the work starts. The decking had apparently been there for 13 years…so hindsight would suggest this could have been done at an earlier or more convenient time…during one of the many recent lockdowns perhaps? We realised the impact when the ‘joiner’ knocked our door at 10 past 8 in the morning to ‘check that we were up’ so that he could start his chainsaw and start cutting out the old decking…..we opted to go out for a walk returning at half three to find this being ‘loaded’ into a trailer with the consequent ‘backwards and forwards’ around the cottage this entails. On another evening we were ‘put off’ from using the hot tub due to a ‘load of’’…yet to be used decking perched at the side of the building around it. This work ‘stretched’ for 5 days during our weeks stay. Perhaps most disappointing of all, was on our day of leaving we had to be ‘clear’ of the cottage by 10 in the morning….but there was no one there to ‘hand over to….both tenants were out, one presumably working his farm and the other out in her van. Ironically there was (yet) another visitor going about the farm getting ready to go horse riding. If you are considering this cottage as an option it is a beautiful house with in a lovely setting, but is definitely a ‘business’ attempting to generate income from several areas of which you are only one. If you are looking for ‘picture postcard’ this may not be it….it wasn’t for us….we just felt like we were there for the ‘requisite week’ before being ‘turned around’ for the ‘next punter’ which may well be you. Definitely not worth the 2k plus that we paid. Disappointing overall. Heart of The Lakes (who we booked through) got in touch with us regarding our feedback and informed us that they would speak to the farm/tenants regarding compensation. A few days later they reported that this had been declined by the farm/tenants on the basis that we had been made aware that it was a working farm. So I would respectfully suggest that the customer experience isn’t one of the priorities at a farm where building work, chainsaws and trailers being loaded up with waste is part of ‘The Working Farm Experience’……Beware
