I stayed here for one night in November. As a solo traveler in Japan, it can be difficult at times to find an onsen hotel that offers single travelers a room at a good price. However, I had no problem reserving a single room with two meals. The service was wonderful and I definitely will go back. The food was very nice and the dinner offered more than I could possibly eat. I also got to visit a maple leaf nighttime light-up in a park not far from the hotel. This was part of the sightseeing services only offered to hotel guests. I believe they offer stargazing outings in the winter months as well. The manager spoke fluent English and made sure that I had everything I needed. The hotel is not new, but it is well-maintained. I visited the hot spring three times and was able to view some of the mountain scenery from the indoor bath. I was also able to view the famous "sea of clouds" at dawn the next morning. In summary I was very impressed with my stay at Heritage Minoyama. The only thing I wish they had was wifi in the rooms. Currently, it is only available in the hotel lobby. However, this was not a big issue as I had plenty of other things to keep me entertained during my stay. Oh, and the entire property is non-smoking, which was wonderful!

This is an inn located in a rather quiet section of Nagatoro, on the river bank and across from the natural history museum of Saitama. The facilities are old but well-maintained, not modern or state-of-art or extremely clean or refined, but have certain charm that we decided to go back there (and probably will in the future as well). One reason is obviously this inn costs rather moderately... perhaps because of that I saw many elderly people and families there. Has a deck on which you can do BBQ (during summer only, I believe); from the deck or the entrance you can easily talk a walk to the river (Arakawa) where there are 'tiger rocks' (The area in Saitama around Nagatoro is known for its geological wealth, that's why they have a museum as well). They have public baths (inside and outside). It was pleasant to wake up and hear chirps of wild birds. This time we wrongly got off at Nagatoro Station (on Chichibu Railway) but it's closer to Kami-Nagatoro. If you walk between Nagatoro and Kami-Nagatoro it takes only 15 minutes or so. From Nagatoro Station a busy shopping street with souvenirs shops goes down toward the river. Rafting, river water plays, etc. are also available. Yet I like this inn because it's set away from that busy touristy buzz.

We absolutely loved this place! This was our most expensive stay on this trip and it was well worth it. Our room was elegant. The staff was superb in every way, always attentive to our needs. We were the only Westerners there and they went out of their way to help us with our questions. We specifically reserved a second floor room to get a view of the river and to be above the ground floor gardens. The walk on the rocks was very close and easily accessible as was the shopping street with places for a quick snack or lunch. The evening bus to Momiji Park to see the illuminations made for an easy visit there. Everything here was perfect. This was one of our favorite places in all of our visits to Japan. Please see my discussion of the restaurant Choseikan Restaurant Iwazakura as well.

We are here as your second house, only 7 rooms. The 6 rooms have own outside bath. Nagatoro is famouse for nature. The mountain, river and fresh air. You can relax and feel at ease. Just stay and feel cozy with our Japanese traditional and local cuisine and hop spring.
Went here for lunch and ate in the beautiful polished wood dining room. We asked in advance for them to make the meal vegetarian and they did so with great attention to detail down to the replacement of skipjack (katsuo) broth (dashi) with a seaweed-based broth. Lovely kaiseki food and wonderful service.

Simple, standard ryokan in the middle of Chichibu village, very good value. Rooms typical Japanese style, quite nice, view onto a little garden. Very powerful aircon, and good sound isolation. Totally silent, slept like a baby. If you need total quiet suggest you tell them so they don't book you into the room right next to the rotenburo. One little problem was the pillows which were unacceptably soft, so I asked for a harder pillow and they concocted one by packing two small sobagara pillows into one pillow case and tightening it with a knot. Not ideal but did the trick. Suggest you call ahead or bring your own pillow. Food was standard ryokan fare, nothing to rave about but good enough. The rotenburo is small but neat, the indoor bath a bit shabby but again, it does the job. Ensuite toilet and bathroom tiny as is the custom in these lands. Suggest you use communal bath, as, again, is the custom here anyway. Nearby mountains make for good hiking, the valley and stream behind Lake Sakura (cf Urayama Dam) quite lovely for cycling and a dip in the cold stream.
