Reviewed By srk60We visited The Umstead several years ago, pre pandemic and have spoken highly of our time there. This time we flew here to eat at Herons and experience Chef Steven Greene’s art tour tasting menu. The food is absolute perfection. The artistry and preparation of every course was outstanding. The restaurant was renovated recently and is beautiful. A work station was put directly in front of the kitchen’s window, so they removed the tables that were there when we ate here the last time. Too bad really because those seats were so special. The waitstaff was fantastic. Scott and Nathan were wonderful and helped make the two nights we dined memorable. There is only a tasting menu currently being offered. No longer an a la carte menu. We had the 4 course menu the first night and the art tour menu the second night. Know before you go: Reservations at Herons is absolutely necessary. Dinner, lunch and brunch. For those people who enjoy being spontaneous please know; that is not an option here. Also the outdoor tables are perfection for brunch and lunch. We also ate at the bar when we arrived on Thursday for a late lunch. The service was slow but friendly. The food was delicious We were sorry we didn’t book a suite like we did the last time. We were upgraded to a lake view room but the window was odd and so small that the room was dark. Avoid the rooms ending in 04 (we stayed in 604). A room facing the front of the hotel would have been better with a larger window. The size of the room was great. The bathroom was beautiful. Everything is clean and updated. The hotel gym is beautiful. You can get water, Gatorade and apples which was nice to see The pool is beautiful. The staff is friendly and very hard working. Lunch is served poolside. The cabanas are absolutely worth the price. The spa is beautiful. You can use the sauna after your treatment. The therapist was very good. The art work throughout the resort is worth a tour. Ask for a printed guide and walk throughout the property. So worth your time. We loved the Chihuly sculpture in the lounge. And Realm II by Karen Jacobs. The pottery throughout the property was breathtaking. Glad we returned to The Umstead. The property and dining experience at Herons was worth the trip.

Each morning our breakfast was cook to perfection and Katrina made sure to make our morning extra special with waffles. She even suggested a few places for us to visit while here. Nice Hotel - Friendly Staff - Easy Check-In - Great Location - Comfortable and Clean
Reviewed By Brian DA very nice hotel with an excellent location. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The breakfast buffet is great and the parking is free. The staff is friendly and helpful, with easy check-in. I love the mobile key and wish I could get that through the app without having to stop by the front desk. Check-out is also available in the app and does not require a stop by the front desk. Everything about the hotel was great and would stay here again. Other than the mobile key still requiring a stop at the front desk, there are no complaints about this fun 3 night stay. Recommend a room at the far end of the hallway by the stairs. Easy to go in and out through the stairs exit and avoid the elevator at the center of the hotel.

New hotel with great rooms, staff, and location
Reviewed By Q2629TOcarolnWe stayed for one night and loved the location - close to so many restaurants (and shopping). The rooms were large, clean, new. Bathrooms were really nice with large walk-in shower; though, water pressure was pretty weak. Staff was delightful and made the stay more pleasant. Of course the cookies were delicious. Only negative - No sustainability efforts whatsoever. Still putting small toiletries in the bathrooms; plastic wrapped coffee cups; and over-air-conditioned in the common spaces. Also, I had trouble getting the a/c to stop running; couldn't shut it off. C'mon Hilton; you need to catch up to everyone else.

Wait for it… there is no valet and no shuttle. They do not disclose this when you book. Buyer be aware. Booked this for my husbands business trip. The omelette for breakfast was as much as the steak dinner. Didn’t seem like a good value overall and won’t be re-booking mostly due to no parking and lack of empathy about it. Ask a lot of questions. Our stay was during a festival where they close the streets so that limited parking very far away from the hotel can’t get your car after 5 AM. Also not disclosed at time of booking. The room and furnishings are lovely. Lots of ambiance. But it’s not NYC or Cambridge MA so parking situation is not acceptable.

This site is a classic Hilton Garden Inn, which footprint we are very familiar with. The check in staff was very friendly and helpful and the room very clean and in good order. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and this site meets or exceeds good Hilton standards. Giving this location an excellent rating was easy with the special attention and friendly treatment and service we received each morning at breakfast. We were served and assisted by Trey, a wonderful person and someone who exceptionally represents the name and quality of Hilton. We strongly recommend this HGI if you are traveling and staying in the area.
