The Angel Hotel

This Georgian ivy clad 4 star boutique hotel and restaurant in Suffolk surprises with a twist of urban chic. Our Suffolk hotel is right in the heart of Bury St Edmunds town centre and everything is just a step from here. Explore winding, cobbled, shop filled streets and a plethora of ancient architecture on the doorstep. Once inside, The Angel Hotel is a curious contrast of comfy contemporary design with touches of exotic grandeur. Warm leather sofas vie for your company in the lounge, which is filled with curiosities, pop art, eccentric oddities and cool vintage furniture. It is a hotel of many different aspects all artfully blended together into an exciting package and the bedrooms are no exception. The Angel Eaterie has a great reputation and dining here is a culinary treat.

Wonderful night away.

We stayed in the ivy suite with copper bath. Huge room which was absolutely spotless. Every member of staff we met were friendly and helpful. We didn’t eat in the evening at the hotel but did have the cooked breakfast which was delicious. Great cocktail in the bar too.

Central location, great room, good breakfast ? value for money

We couldn’t have got better for the money, the hotel is situated in the heart of Bury St Edmunds within a 2 min walk of the cathedral and the gardens. The room was a decent size, clean and well equipped. We had breakfast at the hotel and the first morning wasn’t as good as the 2nd. Would stay here again happily.

Very good small local hotel

Reviewed By Martin C

Stayed here for 3 nights. Small comfortable friendly hotel. My room was well equipped and bed and pillows comfortable. My room overlooked the road and there was a fair amount of traffic noise. Didn’t bother me but if you are sensitive to noise ask for room overlooking car park. Excellent breakfast all served at table. Excellent location within easy walk of main attractions and (very handy) has own car park. Would certainly stay again.

The Ickworth Hotel

The East Wing at Ickworth was home to the Hervey family before it passed to the National Trust. The surroundings are as grand as ever but the idea that “children should be seen but not heard” has gone right out of the hundred or more windows. Where else can you go that offers luxurious surroundings, outstanding facilities, exquisite cuisine and family friendly activities? The Ickworth is unique. It's also one of the finest luxury family hotels in the UK.

Great hotel for families with room for improvements

Reviewed By johnrB785SF

Overall we had a great time and would recommend the hotel and we would love to go back again one day. It's a fantastic location with stunning grounds, the staff were lovely and the room was big. You can put the kids to bed and go down to the restaurant and lounge for the evening as their monitor service means you can keep an eye on the kids (and it's only a short walk to the rooms should they wake up). This is a really amazing perk for this hotel. You can grab some bikes and explore the huge grounds, order a picnic and go sit by the lake, have a drink and let the kids go watch the films they put on at night if your kids are older. As a parent, you can actually have a holiday and a break at this hotel, amazing! But there were a few disappointments that they could work on and are good to be aware of. The food was hit and miss, the burger, skate wing and chicken wings were excellent. But other dishes were quite poor, like the fried mushrooms, Tofu laksa curry & trout all had next to no flavour, The menu also doesn't during the week. The whole point of staying at the hotel is that you can eat dinner together while the children sleep upstairs (due to their baby monitor service), which means you are going to eat at the hotel restaurant each night. If we 'd stayed for longer than 3 nights we would have been very bored of the menu. At times the service was very slow. We waited 20 minutes one night to get asked for our drink order in the lounge - even though the staff knew we were there. Two out of the three breakfasts, we saw families getting cross that they'd waited 45 minutes for their food and missed their nursery slots! We waited 20 minutes one morning to be asked for our breakfast drink orders. That's a lot in just three days. I was disappointed with the child facilities in general, especially given the focus for this on their website. It's worth saying they're a LOT better than the nothing most hotels have, but this is a luxury hotel aimed at families, especially those with smaller children so I think it's fair to have high expectations for this. The Four Den nursery in particular was hugely disappointing. I was expecting a large, light area which had outdoor space, not a small room that looked the same as my son's nursery (and therefore he reacted very badly on seeing it...though was fine the next few sessions). It's disappointing given some of the lovely creches and nurseries out there to find one smaller and less enticing that our day to day nursery. I really think this needs to be seen as a treat BY children, for that it needs to wow them and look like a fun play area, not a nursery room. The 'fairy garden' was perhaps the low point and a bit of an embarrassment. One old, fading plastic baby climbing space and one very small climbing frame. No swings, no sand pit, no roundabout. Your average council park playground has 5x more equipment in it. I really would expect a lovely playground, with bark floor, slides, swings, zip lines etc. An area kids can go play for hours at a time. The kids play equipment was also very disappointing. A box full of old, half broken and incomplete bits and bobs. Two wickets out of a cricket set. Two 'chariot' push bikes which looked 20 years old and one of them had a pin missing in the wheels so the back wheel came off, a broken rocket which meant it didn't work, two broken frisbees. Again, given the selling point I'd expect all sorts of high quality play equipment for all ages and for it to be in perfect working order.

Great place to stay when visiting Bury St Edmunds area

Location of the hotel was very good; just off the centre. Staff were very pleasant and very helpful, and organised an early breakfast for us. No other meals available, but we were given a map showing all of the many eateries on offer in Bury. Room was lovely and clean. All in all a great place to stay when visiting Bury.

Comfortable and friendly

Reviewed By danceswithdaffodils

A great pub with very friendly staff and excellent food. We stayed here for one night. The bedroom was spacious, spotlessly clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable and warm. We had dinner in the bar. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but it was hot when it did arrive. The only thing that spoiled the ambience was the ‘pop’ music coming through the speakers. It felt out of place and where we were sitting sounded very tinny. It was even louder in the courtyard outside, which was a shame, as it is so very well decked out and a lovely area to sit. If you are lucky enough to get a parking space, be aware that it is all permit parking, or a yellow line after 6pm. Although it is walking distance into town, you won’t be able to leave your car at the pub because of the permit parking, unless of course you go into town in the evening. Breakfast was good, with a good continental selection as well as the choice of a fried breakfast. Once again, the ‘pop’ music playing through the speakers in the morning did spoil a good breakfast. It wasn’t particularly loud, just a bit annoying. An enjoyable stay nonetheless, though I won’t be rushing back.

Birthday Weekend

We booked here for a couple of days over the Bank Holiday. The Inn is stunning, set in beautiful gardens surrounded by farmland in the pretty village of Bardwell. The accommodation is converted stables in the grounds. The rooms were lovely, comfortable, clean, good comfy bed and quality linen, with a nice en-suite. The usual tea, coffee, toiletries and towels were provided. Outside the rooms was a lovely seating area to enjoy the sunshine and a drink. Breakfast was good, a nice full English with tea, coffee, toast etc, cooked well with quality ingredients. We dined in the Inn on one night, the wait was quite long, but was worth it, food was yummy and service was good. Will definitely be back as the whole place was so chilled and relaxing. Definitely recommend.

Worst Premier Inn I have Stayed In

Reviewed By 569gerrym

I have reported all these items to Premier Inn so I am not telling tales out of school. Numerous defects in the room (door lock inoperative , noisy AC, leaking shower etc.). Cooked breakfast items were cold due to ineffective heat lamps over the buffet dishes. This is a new addition to the Premier Inn family I believe but lloks like it was rushed into service.
