Still damaged by the civil wars and unrest that have marked its history, Bissau is a city in the midst of reconstruction. The city is home to many monuments and museums, including the Guinea-Bissau National Arts Institute, the newly rebuilt Bissau French Cultural Centre, the Pidjiguiti Memorial, honoring those killed in the 1959 Bissau Dockers' Strike, and the Centro Artistico Juvenil, where local youth artisans create works of art on site. Local beaches provide a relaxing respite from the heat.

I am surprised when I stepped in to the hotel and my room. I was like wow, it is like a 4 star hotel in a large international cities. The room is super clean, the AC is really strong, hot water ! Great ! The food at the restaurant was great but slightly pricey from local standard ! The wifi was a bit unstable, it was on and off, on and off. But still able to do the basic ! Also also, the bed was really comfortable! I had a great night sleep there! Strongly recommend !

Very nice sanctuary in Bissau. Pretty grounds, well maintained. I had a lovely suite; some travel mates in older buildings weren't as satisfied. Internet decent. Lovely pool, well attended to, clean, though oddly open only 10 to 7, making morning swim impossible. We didn't eat here. The bar is thin with no seating: Cristal beer just cfa 2k, but a cocktail (I mixed myself) cost a hefty cfa 5k. Nespresso machine at breakfast broke; no filtered coffee. Staff are super kind and try though. I'd have given five stars, but readers should know this is not in the heart of town, nor in the Che G area. You can walk out and up and down the main drag, but there ain't much to see. Mosquito net; AC; TV with BBC World and multiple sport channels, but only a small LG; in-room hot water heater for sink and shower, love that

Its a good hotel with friendly staff and clean rooms. Choose rooms to the front and above 2nd floor. Avoid the rooms to the side w/o windows. The hotel is very central in Bissau. There is a free airport transfer available.

Clean, spacious rooms with AC; regular breakfast. However a inefficient, indifferent, helpless, almost hostile receptionist(s) where, by contract with the travel agente, they had to organize our transfer(s) in Bissau. They where more interested on the tv program then in the customers needs. The home driver was the helpful one. The same panorama returning to the hotel from the islands. And because it was the 1st January every body was out except the guard in the front door and the helpless receptionist. Customers had to go out for food and drinks and return to the hotel. As a doctor I spent many Christmas and New Eve working dreaming to be outside with family and friends. But I never missed my duties with the patients. "Serviços mínimos" does it mean something to you? Definitely this historic hotel deserves a better management.

The Executive Room is spacious and the hotel is quiet. Not conveniently located, though. The management of this hotel needs to understand the need for regular maintenance of all equipment, facilities and common areas. They charge European prices but offer African service. I must say that staff were exceptionally nice. Great to have free airport shuttle provided, however, their email address does not work (they know it but don’t seem concerned about it), so you will never get a confirmation about your reservation made on their website or about the airport pick up. VERY poor internet, which means that sometimes it was impossible to work, send or receive emails. This is unacceptable. Bathroom: - Tissue box in bathroom empty and continued empty for the entirety of the 2 weeks’ stay - Shower head blocked – it was unblocked after complaint - Dark bathroom, especially shower room. Mirror light doesn’t work. Feels dirty, although it might not be. - Broken bin lid, and remained broken. - One soap/shampoo given at the beginning of my stay, now finished but never replenished. After day 8, I asked and got some more. - Terrible and slimy shower curtain Facilities: - Very poor internet - Gym closed – two terrible machines available outdoors. Awful. - Pool dirty – cannot be used for obvious hygiene reasons, even though when I tried there were loads and loads of locals (not guests) playing loud music and making it most uninviting. - Very poor maintenance overall. Breakfast: - Very poor, few choices, slow service Staff: - Very friendly, incredibly nice Living room: - Fridge cupboard door doesn’t close - Broken chair – never fixed despite complaint - Bad lighting – dark - TV cables hanging down, no remote control, so not possible to use TV Bedroom - Safe didn’t work – fixed after complaint - Wardrobe – wobbly sliding doors - 2 plastic hungers - TV too small to watch. Only 1 channel works. - Uncomfortable pillows - Stained sheets, but comfortable bed. Water - No complimentary water provided

OK the simple fact is that there is not much hotels to choose from in Bissau and which ever you pick it is probably overpriced. The location of Malaika hotel is good and the room is ok (expect mosquitos) but that’s it. They offer airport pick up but I have never been able to get them answer any emails. Don’t even try to email in English, the whole hotel has one staff Abu, who speaks English and he is at house-keeping. At check in nobody speaks English and even hotel manager is unable to communicate in English. If you book your room through hotels.com or Expedia good luck as hotel has no contact with them. I did book and was pretty much thrown on the street. If you arrive at night be prepared to kick the door as its locked and staff sleeps at reception. If you make enough noise you able to wake up the staff or even better save the phone number and call them to wake up. Breakfast is moderate at best and if you go too late you might not find much to eat. Hotels in ground floor have no windows so they quite dark and sometimes you walk faster than the internet works. Some days it is just useless and signal is bad in some rooms. Take your mosquito repellent as you going to find mosquitos in the room. Also take your own shampoo etc as they only provide a soap. Aircon works ok and tv has CNN, however that’s pretty much only English channel. Shower gives you super-hot water. You might get better rate by booking at hotel rather than online travel agent. Remember that they only accept cash, no credit cards. Would recommend to change money outside of the hotel and pay in local currency as the rates they give to EUR/USD are worse than you get next street with money changers. There is no safe, no coffee making facilities in the room and not too many power sockets. As said, there is no much options in Bissau, some other hotels are even worse.

Hallucinant!

The Safety Place it is a functional, simple, not expensive and safe location to explore the African Way of life.. We are located near the airport and not far from Downtown in Bario Ajuda. Welcome to Guinea Bissau
A filthy guesthouse that is difficult to find even for taxi drivers. A long-term guest sits on the porch with his friends and chats into the evening so it is difficult for you to sleep. The caretaker doesn’t speak English. It is the cheapest place on the Internet.
