10 Top-Rated Hotels in Belize

August 11, 2022 Kandra Bartel

According to famed diver Jacques Cousteau, the Great Blue Hole of Belize is one of the most spectacular dive sites on earth. The crystal-clear sapphire waters are home to colorful tropical fish and several species of reef sharks – ideal for brave divers who love to get up close and personal with sea life. On dry ground, diverse rainforests, mangrove swamps, and Mayan ruins are perfect for exploration. The beaches of Belize are sunny and tranquil spots for a day of relaxation.

Rustic charm

Reviewed By 144katrinah

Colinda is full of rustic charm. The cabanas are far from Luxurious but have everything that you need. The owners have tried hard to make the rooms as homely as possible. The area on which they are located isn’t really a beach as such, more a man made patch of sand and gravel next to the sea but the whole of caye caulker looks like this. The cabanas are located at the far end of town, some distance from the split, down a dead end road.Bikes are provided bur we preferred to walk. It takes about 15 mins to reach the split and main bars. We had a nice stay but unfortunately didn’t get any sleep at all on one of the nights as their was a wedding in the hotel next door which went on until 5am and we had to be up at 5.30 to ho on a trip. I do feel we should of been warned that this was going to take place. We would probably of chosen to stay else where. If you are planning to stay here I’d advise to bring a mosquito net as we gotten eaten alive and the room is also full of red ants which bite! Not the owners fault! There are plenty of supermarkets near by where you can buy essential supplies at a much cheaper price than the hosts offer so get your own!

Lots of potential

Reviewed By taliward

Hopkins Bay We arrived to a warm welcome and our names on the blackboard at the front of the hotel welcoming us! We were then asked for a driving licence to check in. We are from the UK and didn't plan on driving in Belize and so mine was at home. Luckily my husband had his. We've never been asked for this ever before at check in and so not sure what would have happened if we didn't have this. ROOM Our room, 1502, was the guest room of the 3 bedroom unit and the smallest bedroom and bathroom but still a good size and very clean. They did open our room up to the kitchen which gave us an extra huge space but we didn't really use this too much. One of the other rooms came off this and there was a large gap in the door. We spent the first day whispering not wanting to disturb them and didn't feel like we could use the space. The couple in this room moved the second day to a beach front villa and we felt a little more relaxed. The third unit is upstairs and the under stairs has a cupboard with padlocked cupboard doors into the guest room we were in.....it's a louvre style door and so lets in every bit of sound. As a result we slept badly as we could hear every sound. Fortunately they seemed to have checked out after this one night and so the other two nights we slept well. The villas are great for families but I just don't think they work at all in their current state for separate couples. Apparently our guide said the hotel does get a lot of comments about a certain kind of nightly activity keeping people awake!! The room itself was lovely. A great size, air conditioning and a ceiling fan and the decor was nice. The bedside lights had to be switched off at the switch by the bathroom and I always prefer a switch by the bed to do this. The bed was very comfortable and there was a safe provided. The bathroom was decorated in bright blue tiles and a really pretty sink. There were large bottles of body wash and conditioner and so bring shampoo (if you prefer separate items) and body lotion. The shower was fine and powerful enough. I didn't have a hairdryer and so asked for this just after check in, it wasn't there before my shower and so I asked again and hopped in the shower. It still wasn't there after getting ready and so I ended up going to reception with a towel on my head still and waiting about 10 minutes for them to find one. It was a good hairdryer in the end but it's a shame it took so long to get when it should have been in the room on arrival. The other odd thing was that we had only two hangers in the room which had robes on. We ended up putting the robes on a top shelf and had just one hanger each which was odd as the wardrobe was pretty big. The hotel is into greener living and so provides all guests with a water bottle which is great as we'd left ours at home. We had a water dispenser in the room which we could refill our bottles with which was excellent. We had an outside deck area which felt pretty private even though it was shared with a another unit as the areas have a little recess. We bought breakfast from Jashlenn's in town (only open Saturdays) and ate this on the deck one morning in the sunshine and it was glorious. However, be careful about the evening.....we got bitten so much in just 5 minutes on our first night by little bugs that make you bleed immediately. The bites didn't itch but left little red circular spots which lasted about two weeks. We didn't seem to get it elsewhere in Hopkins. POOLS/BEACH/WATER SPORTS/ACTIVITIES On arrival they apologised to us about the sargassum but told us there were two beautiful pools and water sports we could still enjoy. One pool was really busy with kids and so we went to the other and it was very green and so we couldn't get in. On our last day one guest was in the pool as we walked by and the guy from the restaurant approached her and we assume advised her to get out as she promptly left. I wouldn't have got in it if you'd paid me but there were no signs up to say not to use it. We did get time to use the other pool the next afternoon and it was pleasant and a really good temperature. The beach was fine despite the sargassum and I can only imagine how lovely it is when it's not there en masse. There were beach chairs to use, hammocks and fixed shades. It was all fine. We didn't try the water sports but others were giving it a go and enjoying them. We loved the bikes we could use to cycle into town. They were a little older but worked fine and were free. No locks but we didn't feel we needed them in Hopkins. We wanted to take a couple of trips out but the hotel has a set schedule and the trips we wanted were not running on the days we wanted. So we went to Get To Know Belize for our excursions to Cockscomb Basin and our chocolate making experience which were both brilliant. FOOD Upon check in we were given a welcome sheet which had a few QR codes and one was for the restaurant. There were a couple of veggie options on there and so decided to try it out for lunch. On arrival at the restaurant we were told that was an old menu and the new one was on the board in front of us. It didn't have a single veggie option so the waiter had to go and ask the chef to make something up. What came was rice and beans, a bit of salad and some plantain. It was fine to fill a gap but not great. The evening menu had a veggie tofu curry and I can't stand tofu and so we ate out in town for every lunch and dinner after this. We tried breakfast one day and it was okay but not great and compared to town, expensive. When we did sit down I scratched my finger on a staple that was sticking out of the table. I felt around the edges of the table and there were sharp staples poking out all over. I think they must have stapled table covers onto the tables the night before and had neglected to removed the sharp staples which was not good. We saw the same waiter pulling these out on our last day. The atmosphere in the restaurant was subdued and it didn't feel like a place we wanted to be. In contrast, Hopkins town was so friendly and we loved being out of the hotel. HOTEL GROUNDS There is a lot of potential here. The buildings look nice, there is some beautiful planting and the pools are pleasant but there are missing details. For instance, the edging of the path is broken in several places. If you have kids they could hurt themselves on this. The lights lining the paths need attention too as some have totally broken shades and others partly broken and it just looks a little unloved. We liked the welcome area with a cute little sink just before reception but the reception area seemed a little dark and sparse and needs a little love. There was building work going on by the pool on one of the bars but it didn't really impact us at all. HOPKINS We loved it! On arrival we were told to go out into town and enjoy the community. Admittedly we were a little nervous but we hopped on the bikes and stopped by Jashlenn's for breakfast the following day, Shadel's Magic Pastry Shop for punch and the supermarket. So many people waved and said hi. And it just got better. At night, we mostly walked into town and back and felt totally safe. One night after a 6km hike and 6mile bike ride we did take the complimentary hotel shuttle into town which ran until round 9pm. We could have asked the restaurant to call the hotel to get a lift back but we didn't mind the walk and we had so many people wish us a lovely evening. Try Ella's, JJs, Driftwood, Swinging Armadillo, Nice Cream and North Side Cool Spot for breakfast (pancakes are the best I've tasted!). We cycled to Jaguar Reef and back which is in the hotel zone. It's definitely more upmarket and holiday-like this end of town but it's missing the magic of central Hopkins! If we stayed at Jaguar Reef we wouldn't have come out here as much and we just had the best time in Hopkins town. OVERALL The hotel has a lot of potential. I think once the little maintenance issues are sorted and the rooms are configured to allow separate couples to stay there comfortably this places has so much to offer. I'd like to see the menu incorporate at least two vegetarian options and I would love to feel a better vibe here as the staff seemed a little more into their phones at times than service (very different feel to the great customer service we had by email before our stay and from the lovely drivers we had on our night shuttle and to take us to the airport). Generally, we felt far happier out of the hotel than in it which is not typical and for me a trip/hotel is all about the way it makes you feel. However, the bones are here to build something great and the location is brilliant.

I could stay in the rooms for a month -- good amount of space, full kitchen, tv with netflix, and STRONG AC made it extremely comfortable. We also took the private snorkel tour with John, which is a MUST DO. John was able to point out so many cool wildlife and facts, and was great company for the full-day trip. Just remember to reapply your (reef safe) sunscreen between every dive or you backs and legs are going to regret it :')

We stayed for a few days and had a terrific time. The grounds are very nice and the new cabins were very comfortable. Whoever decided to include bunk beds was inspired and allowed us to avoid the inevitable squabbles among our children when they have to share a bed. The food was very good and had a varied selection. The pool was beautiful and the walk to the beach took about 30 seconds. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this place.

We just returned from a 6 night stay at Ramons. The property is lush with beautiful tropical vegetation and the rooms were very comfortable. The staff works around the clock to rake and haul away the sargassum so the beach is enjoyable. We saw so many other resorts with huge amounts of sargassum piled up on the beach but none at Ramons. The restaurant, Pineapples, is wonderful and we had many breakfasts, lunches, and dinners there. My daughter got her open water PADI certification at the on-site dive center (with Rolando, who is awesome). The crew and our excursions were a highlight...be sure to find Joshua (the manatee whisperer- haha) and Pete for your snorkeling adventures. They are both so knowledgeable about ocean life and made us feel well cared for...they were such fun! The hotel staff is there to take care of your every need, they are organized, responsive and do everything with a smile. Highly recommend Ramons!

A Unique Resort

We were here the last week in May for 5 days. Enjoyed our stay very much. Staff is friendly. Private beach is very nice, but it is about a 20 minute boat ride one way. There is food and alcohol at the beach. Breakfast is delicious, get some fry jack and loganiza sausage, you can thank me later. Couple of minor items: no in room coffee maker, no chair in room (2 on the porch). The pool area was good, look for Bob the crocodile. Go to the Japanese restaurant and Level Up arcade. The arcade was something to do when it was raining, but a slice of nostalgia none the less. Highly recommend you rent a golf cart. Shout out to the concierge staff, they took care of things. Despite a couple days of rain, would recommend the resort.
