The service was great right from the start at the hotel reception. The staff at the dining hall was earnest and attentive as well. The food was good with mostly Japanese fare but sufficient westernised dishes for picky eaters. The onsen with indoor and outdoor pools was pleasant but small and crowded. The decor and furniture were outdated. What creeped me out was the discovery of a used eye drops dispenser and other trash in our hotel room. Quality control in housekeeping was sadly lacking.

Stayed in a Kumamon room, which is delightful for Kumamon fans. Nice rotemburo on the roof with great view of Aso. However the sign to the rotemburo was not very clear. Exit the lift and it’s the door on the left. Went into the indoor bath instead. It wasn’t very big. Only realized where the rotemburo was while waiting for the lift. Food served for dinner and breakfast was just ok.

We stayed the room of Japanese-Western of 4th floor, that we could see Aso volcano via large windows. The dinner was Kaiseki and the local cuisine was very delicious. Due to there are 6 kinds of style of hot spring separate rooms, that I was really satisfied. Just too many Chinese tours stay here, that I felt a little ... (They were too much noisy, but staffs never ask them for quiet.)

Hotel located 1000 - 1200 m from Aso-eki (no shuttle), I enjoyed my western-style room with the view on the volcano. However, the room needs to be refreshed and have better curtains. The onsen is average in quality. The food buffet is large and you can find all you want for dinner but breakfast has less choice.

Well we certainly had a unique experience at this fine Ryokan. Our room was very nice with comfortable double bed (western style) but with a tub / shower outdoors on our private porch. Tub supplied by local hot water (but no too hot). We were prepared delicious and gracious vegetarian meals. (Eating Japanese style). Very welcoming staff and with decent English. Free WIFI in bar. Free parking. Very special.

This hotel is at the north west side of Mt Aso, along the circular ring road. Very convenient if you are driving. We made it our stopover point between Kumamoto city and Yufuin/Beppu. Also has a 24h Lawson beside it. Hotel has 6 private onsens that guests can take turns to use : 2 require bookings and the other 4 do not. Toilets, teeth brushing area are seperate from rooms. Overall a very nice hotel.

instead of staying at Aso, we decided to go to Miyaji, and stay at the Kanpo no Yado, where we had a room (6th floor) with spectacular view on mount Aso. The hotel is comfortable (tatami-rooms), and you can enjoy the onsen until 23h, so no need to rush. If you want to admire mount Aso from the outdoor pool, you should go for a bath in the morning. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast too, but hotel staff don't speak English. However, a mixture of very simple Japanese and (mainly) gestures will do. Make sure you have enough money, the system doesn't always recognise foreign credit cards (my Mastercard didn't work). They have a shuttle service, taking you from and to the station in 5 minutes, and it's another 10 minutes to Aso Station (where you take the bus to go to Aso mountain)

We have booked 3 rooms, for our family holiday. 1. On arriving, my 2 year-old daughter stepped on the indoor floor, I was about to stop her ( we know the rules, not to wear shoes indoor), the male keep just shouted at her. Is that necessary? 2. During our dinner time, the food was good, self serviced Japanese bbq or sometings, but the female keeper just cant be bothered to tell us how to cook and where to start, she just left. Do all people how to know how to cook your Japanese bbq? 3. Each room only has 500ml warm water, not hot. At 10pm, we used up the water in my room. We need some hot water to make some milk for my daughter, I went downstairs, and asked for water. The keeper family was watching TV and showed really bad attitude, showing that I was interrupting their life. I was so sorry to ask for water. 4. On checking out, the female keeper saw us and just passed by. I have no choice to put the three keys at the reception without saying goodbey. Thank you so much. Thanks for giving us this invaluable experience.

We are travelling around Japan with my family and I was looking for some out of the way unique places to stay. This ranch was perfect!!! The ranch provides basic comfortable accommodation.... our package also included a BBQ dinner and breakfast so it was exceptional value. Dinner was a traditional Japanese BBQ that you cook on one of the hotplates. The food provided was delicious and we certainly went to bed with full bellies! Breakfast was also lovely. For meals we could choose set times so the restaurant could prepare hot delicious food for us. As I said the rooms are basic... this is not a posh upmarket hotel, it is a real ranch with an authentic rustic style. We loved it. Our room has a toilet but the bathhouse is a shared facility.... it is a traditional Japanese bathhouse with a common change area, shower room and hot bath. After a great nights sleep we sat on the veranda while our three teenagers headed off for an hours ride. Peter and his staff were exceptional with the kids and very patient with my daughter who was frightened. I can not speak highly enough of the staff and Peter who were very hospitable, making sure we were comfortable and happy. Thanks for a great stay.... only problem was one night was not long enough!

Return visit. This time in a slightly smaller cottage without massage chair. There's a big cypress wood indoor onsen bath and sauna rock bath. Kaiseiki meals painstakingly prepared customised to dietary needs, best of the best among those we went to in Japan. Excellent culinary skills, a bit of fusion for some dishes e.g. Potato gratin. Every item is tasty. Most hotels will just prepare hot pot with plain boiling water to cook the sashimi but not for this one. Very thoughtful. The lady boss even observes what we don't eat during dinner and don't serve them during breakfast. Service from the heart from the family even though spoke very limited English. Highly commendable. I filed this after a horrible experience at satonoyu waraku in kurokawa. Experience is like chalk and cheese in comparison. Best is check in at 2 pm and check out at noon with more time for onsen soak. Will definitely return.
