Located about 1 hour drive from Fukuoka city in Asakusa, Roppokan is one of the better onsen hotel in the area. Lots of parking space by the hotel. The hotel is built along the river, with most of the room facing it. Check in was efficient. We were seated in the lobby lounge to enjoy the green tea and sweets, while the staff explaining the hotel detail. There was a foot bath just outside the lounge, facing the river. Our room was on the third floor, facing river and had a nice view of the area. The room is nicely appointed, with a very comfortable feeling staying in it. There was a small pier in front of the hotel in the river for the boat with which the big birds would catch the fish in the river at night. The room itself is spacious and in good shape and state. Outdoor onsen, which is a very nice rock bath, is on the 3rd floor overlooking the river. Dinner is served in partitioned room in the restaurant. Most items of the dinner, including sashimi, grilled fish and the pork were very good. Breakfast was served in the same restaurant. It was a semi buffet style, with fixed plate served individually and other items on buffet table. Meals at the hotel was outstanding. Though it is a relatively small hotel, we really feel good staying at the hotel.

I stayed 2nights at the single tadami room. And its well organized & cozy. I loved the onsen and the pool. The pool area is pretty clean and peaceful. But the staff couldnt speak english well but its fine. They tried to help me when i asked with every hands.also I used google translater. I cant forget how good the morning buffet was. I will definitely come back next time. Its just a few restaurants around here. Theres famous udon place(i didnt go). Near that restaurant, theres a izakaya(they serve okinawa local food). Its cheap and foods were good. They have korean-written menu. so easily chose the menu for me. But one thing i was feeling ubcomfortable was that a korean staff said Restaurants near the hotel, they dont want korean to come. They dont have korean written menu, and her words seemed like even people in the hotel didnt like korean guests. Because we didnt speak japanese, after she said, everytime i had to ask to the staff, i felt a bit worried. I dont know why she said that. I didnt ask for a korean staff. The other staffs brought her to me, even i spoke english. Ofcourse im korean. I didnt do any wrong but she let me feel a guilty.

As I went to Harazuru Onsen, I took a bath at Enmeikan. One can use their facility without overnighting. The entrance is about $6. For a locker, another $1 is required. Nothing is luxurious, but the quality of water, which contains sulfur, is quite good. The temperature is not high, so you can stay for a long time.

The name of the hotel shows its major strength: Panoramic view of Chikugo Plain from the top of a small hill. Besides, the room rate is friendly: 400 US$/night for a Japanese style room with in-room open-air onsen, in-room kaiseiki dinner & breakfast in a private chamber. Onsen of this district may be less famous than Kurokawa & Beppu, but the price justify the choice. The room is clean and well-maintained. Hay mattress and quilts are all clean, though the open-air onsen pool inside the room may be renovated to have a better appearance. Like other onsen inns, all staff I met are very polite and friendly. As this hotel seems not a favourite of package tour groups, it was quiet and cozy during my stay. Some staff speak English. One free shuttle bus runs between hotel (10:30am) and Hakata Station(1:00pm), try to use it since the location of the hotel is not accessible. If you choose to arrive by driving, the hotel has large car park. But please be reminded that some roads and bridges leading to hotel are quite narrow and therefore be careful of vehicles in opposite direction. On holiday when shuttle bus is not available, ask hotel staff to pick you up from JR Chikugo Yoshii station. Yoshii is a small town with some traditional houses and heritages. Recommend to stay 2 nights to have some time to explore it.
