A self-guided walking tour is the best way to appreciate the stunning architecture of Viana do Castelo. The buildings date from several different centuries so styles vary: highlights include the early 20th-century Basilica of Santa Luzia; the 16th-century fountain and former city hall building at the Praça da República; the gothic Cathedral on the Largo da Matriz; and the Monument to Caramuru and Paraguaçu, built just a few years ago in 2009.

The Dona Emília Guesthouse is located in the square in the centre of Viana do Castelo, Praça da República. The century-old building has three storeys and three fronts, giving on to Praça da República, the Costume Museum and Santa Luzia Church. The rooms in the house are ample with high ceilings. The house has plenty of natural light shining in through its many windows and balconies. There is a staircase in the centre of the house, which goes through the entire building up to a large skylight. The ground floor has an gift shop&art gallery a storage room for luggage and / or bicycles and a reception. The first floor has a fully equipped kitchen, a lounge, three large bedrooms sharing two shower rooms, one for men and another for women with several showers. The second floor has three suites, a library and a private art gallery.
Stayed here completely by random and what a surprise. One of the best places I’ve stayed in a while. The owner is as friendly and nice as they come. The decor of the place is amazing, the views from common area as well. Next time I’m in Viana I’m staying here for sure.

Not just a hotel accommodation but a refuge from the outside world. A well located, modern and cosy hotel, the perfect combination with the peaceful environment that surrounds it. Located near Melgac's Spa and surrounded by beautiful Alvarinho farms, between the river we Minho and the national park Peneda Gerês as well as the Galician mountain ranges. The hotel offers free wifi throughout the premises, as well as a car park and outdoor pools. It also offers air conditioning or central heating in all rooms and public areas of the hotel. All rooms have a balcony with panoramic views. Hotel Boavista has a restaurant which presents you with the flavours of an authentic traditional Portuguese cuisine.
Rooms are spacious, clean and well appointed. Hotel has lots of amenities and activities and is very well located to enjoy local area. Whole place is very tired although that does not detract from the comfort and enjoyment. Well priced, this hotel is functional rather than a boutique or resort.

This is a decent accomodation for the rate they charge. If you're looking to be waited on, this is not the place for you. We stayed here for two nights and honestly, I don't think we could have done better. I was a bit worried when we first arrived, but I needn't have: Bernardino materialized seemingly from nowhere, opened the door for us once he realized we were his guests and then handed over the keys after helping us up the stairs with our luggage. This is a former townhouse that has been converted into a guesthouse for tourists. Our room faced the front and was quite large and could easily accomodate four people (one double, a twin, and collapsible sofa bed). Decor is very basic. Bathroom is all up to date. It is not handicapped accessible, and there are a lot of stairs. It is very quiet and clean. The street it is located on is pedestrian only, so you do not need to worry about car noise. There is a communal refrigerator and microwave for your use, but the room it is in was locked up after a certain time. So I do wish that there were some basic dishes and flatware we could have used--or even that the room was accessible around the clock. It is centrally located--minutes of a walk to the local bus/train station, down the street from the main square, a block or less away from the funicular to Santa Luzia. There's a supermarket about three blocks away and several restaurants. Note regarding the underground parking lot--there are three or four pedestrian access points and at least two vehicle entrances/exits. You can very definitely score a parking spot for €5. As soon as you have parked, you need to take your ticket to the manned "blue" booth. If you wait longer than fifteen minutes, then you will be charged by their hourly rates. But have it validated quickly and you are set at €5 for 24 hours. I would definitely stay here again.

House of the nineteenth century, restored maintaining the moth, located within the Historic Center of Viana do Castelo, with 6 suites, overlooking the sea, river and mountain.
A beautifully restored mini-palace with 6 rooms owned and managed in a quiet way where the absolutely over-riding concern of the small team is that you have the happiest possible, relaxing stay. Nothing is too much trouble for them. At the rear of the hotel is a surprisingly large peaceful garden which the breakfast terrace overlooks. We have since moved on to Porto - and to what is (laughingly) supposed to be one of the leading hotels in the world: had we not pre-paid (a vast amount) we would have simply gone back to the Casa - which is in a league far ahead of where we are now. We have already recommended a visit to the Casa to friends - so in that spirit, feel entirely happy to pass on the wider recommendation.

Rooms were spacious with good amenities such as a fridge in the room. Lovely sea view and balconies to sit and relax. We ate in the hotel restaurant and thought the food was really good and great value. The only annoyance was the noise from the bar below of chAirs scraping the floor when trying to sleep. Was a good Camino stop and breakfast on the morning was a good choice.

This hotell is well located in the historical center within walking distance to shops, buss & train station, sea side walk etc. The rooms was larger than in many other design hotels we visited and the cleaning was quick and well performed. The breakfast was buffet style with many choices including both warm & cold food, cakes, fruit, cheese, fresh juice etc - very rich and good! The staff was friendly and the owner Dona Rosa Maria was very helpfull and sugested us walking trails, good communications etc. The only drawbacks one can mention with the hotel is that some fresh paint and new carpets could improve the experience further and that some English language news channel (CNN, BBC ...) would be a nice addition to the Portugese ones.

We stayed at Dias Cada de Campo on the Camino Portuguese to Santiago. It was a delightful stay and the hosts were wonderful. They do not speak much English but their son does. We were able to communicate in a mix of Spanish and Portuguese. The room was very comfortable and well decorated. The property is also gorgeous with grape vines. They make their own wine. Cost of the stay and extras like a bottle of wine were quite reasonable. They generously made breakfast early for us and it was a fantastic meal with fruit, fresh bread, cold cuts, cheese and fresh pastries. Easily one of the best breakfasts we have had in Portugal.
