First of all I must say, the location/onsen itself is amazing. Quite possibly one of the best in Japan, breathtaking views and also tattoo friendly. The food that was served to us on the other hand was a different story. Dinner was presented to us as a kaiseki meal, but instead of having everything coursed out like a normal kaiseki meal, it was all just strewn out on the table. Most of the food was clearly just frozen food thawed out and presented to us. Sashimi clearly smelled fouled, completely cold grilled fish, and duck meat that was chewy and tough like old boots. We decided to leave before the “Gohan” course of the meal which was the only thing coursed to us at the end of the meal. Our server asked us why we were leaving so soon as to which we told her that the meal was basically inedible. She responded with “I’m sorry” instead of trying to elevate the situation and give us something a bit more satisfactory, almost as if this is a commonality for her. With my 20+ years in the hospitality business I would be the first to tell you that you never apologize for anything because it’s clearly admitting that your food/service is sub pay at best. Later in the evening I spoke to some Thai tourists (I lived in Thailand for 2 years) asking them what they though of the food, and without any sort of hesitation told me they thought it was terrible. My wife, who is Japanese also spoke to some Japanese tourists that also said similar things but were a bit more reserved due to the culture nuances of Japanese people in general. The following day we made a complaint to the manager at the front desk about our experience and basically told us the same thing that our server the previous night told us “I’m sorry” and even went as far as telling us that other people have complained in the past and that “he would inform the kitchen of this matter. No comps for anything, no “we’ll make a better experience for you the next time on us” just “sorry” and basically shrugged his shoulders. Despite the amazing location or not, my wife and I spent lots of money and our valuable time to visit this place expecting an incredible experience. Needless to say it’s highly doubtful we would ever come back unless it’s complimentary on the house. Bring your own food, or go to another onsen

Surrounded by wild nature yet only 90 minutes from Tokyo and Niigata, this traditional ryokan inn has been operating in this hot spring valley for over 90 years since its establishment in 1927. The Emperor of Japan and the Imperial Family once stayed at this ryokan, earning it a reputation as the leading hotel in the Minakami Onsen area. Fifteen different baths await exploration, like delightful outdoor rotenburo and recently renovated (2014) tatami mat baths and private family baths available 24 hours. The sounds and sights of the legendary Mount Tanigawadake, the gentle babble of the Tone River and the gorgeous valley views from the guest rooms will immerse you in a uniquely soothing restfulness. Free WiFi available in lobby
This hotel was so great, valet parking, great location for walking into town, Covid restrictions were monitored, onsens that are private for those that have tattoos, or want more privacy. The private onsens face the river. Public baths are separated by gender. It is outdoor and lovely. The bathrooms are stocked with so many amenities. Such as high quality face cream, hair liquid, and hair tonic, not sure what they are, but the availability is great. The room was large we had a eastern style room and you could add more mattresses to the floor for more comfort. Extra mattresses were in the closet. There was a living room area with 4 chairs and a dining table in Eastern style. TV, and slippers in the bathroom, house shoes to transit to and from the onsens. Very good experience. a short drive to Canyons, a rafting, canyoneering company nearby.

This onsen hotel was great! Some of the riverside baths have views to die for! We were so lucky that it snowed the days we were there which added to the ambiance. The food was also good but not the focal point of our visit. They have wifi available in the lobby but my AU cellphone had no signal there. SoftBank has 3G coverage throughout the property. We will definitely return to this hotel!

Room: We had the room with a private onsen, And it's quite big we didnt even bother going to the public bath. The room is also big and the view was nice. Staffs: They are very hospitable and friendly. Our only "very minor" complain was they didnt (or forgot to) serve us tea upon arriving in our room which is usually normal in other Ryokans. They just gave us a brief explanation. They dont speak english much which is really okay coz they tried their best to serve all their guest. Food: Dinner was good but not excellent. We had Japanese breakfast and it was a hearty meal. Transportation: We arrived at Minakami Station. There are a few buses in minakami but we didnt catch that everytime and the schedule was a bit difficult to follow. The following day we were planning to go back to Tokyo via Jomo-Kogen Station but the bus already left, it's either we had to wait for a long time or take a cab which cost around ¥5000. In the end we decided to take the train in minakami which take around 3-4 hrs to reach Ueno with a few interchange. Wifi: There is one in the lounge but difficult to access. I'll rate this 4.5 / 5

Because there is no way to use bus to reach this hotel, they sent a car to pick us up. The driver was very kind when asked us what if we want to stop somewhere on the road to take pictures, because the view was very beautiful. The way is quite far, it cost about 30 minutes by car. When we came to the hotel, I was surprised because the staffs were wating us at the entrance, bowed us, prepared the in-house sandals with a very polite style. The room is a Japan traditional style room, with a balcony to view outside, there are also futon and yukata like other Japan-style hotels. The onsen-bathroom was great! Nice view, good temperature, and wide space. It was one of the best onsen I have experenced at Japan. The last thing, also the best thing about this hotel is the lake right beside the hotel! You go out the door, and the great view of the lake is right before your eyes!

Building public baths bath separate building is located in the land of Yamato and the scenic open-air bath overlooking the Akayako Tanigawadake, south to north, look down to below the shed over Akayako source. Products and tofu are made at the factory in the hotel Tofu kaiseki dinner and demonstration corner of made-up in the skill of seasonal ingredients chefs savor the season of fun breakfast "Buffet of tofu shop." I have done the narration of folklore handed down in this area and the first floor of the hotel with a rice cake with "built-miso" at eight pm every night. Please listen to the memories of the trip.
As others have said, the hotel looks like a leftover from "The Bubble Era"- a Gorgeous Landscaped Entrance but weeds on the way to the baths, a large Lobby with a Coffee Lounge (but no service). The baths were huge with several types & the Outdoor Hot Springs were really great (2 different temperatures) with open skies & trees (& no people). The Lake View from the 6th Floor-room was Stunning! The menu is Healthy Kaiseki based on soy- the Smoked Tofu was outstanding-ending with tofu ice cream. We had 2 beds and futons, and even though it was a mattress the bed was so hard it was very unpleasant. Sleeping on the tatami might have been softer! We went on a weekday so maybe these are just part of their Covid Measures. I was sad there was No Storytelling, & the shop closed early and nothing was open in the area. But we had a decent price for our stay... Funniest Moment: My 40-year old daughter didn't know how to call the front desk on a ROTARY phone!

What a beautiful property! We went during winter and it snowed a little. We made a round trip shuttle reservation through the website and it was prompt from the bus station. The hospitality was great and the room was beautiful. The dinner was amazing. We booked the separate mansionette with personal onsen and it was perfect. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for some R&R!

This "onsen" was one of my bucket list long time. There is located in the deep of the mountains, near the prefectural border of Gunma and Niigata. I drove a car from Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata pref. After passing the border, you will find a junction which is connected with the destination. 10 minutes later, I could see an anciant ryokan, "Choju-kan" in the end of the road. The "Choju-kan" has been established in Meiji-era, more than 100 years ago. The famous Literary giants were staying there for their writeing work. There are 3 onsen in the "Choju-kan". Oldest one is an old fashion, "konyoku", mixed bathing style. These onsen are also served to the "one day guest" but the timing is only limited the mixed style. However for the staying guest is able to use for limited time for 2 hours female only timing in the night time. Another onsen are switching between male and female depends on the timing. Some of room is not equiped the private rest room however all the guest can enjoy and feel the anciant atmosphie of Japan. I strongly recommend this "Choju-kan"!

The mid-sized inn is moderately priced and good value. Nice hot spring onsen with an indoor and outdoor bath. It was snowing and a long dip in the outside bath was a special treat. Dinner and breakfast were served at the dining area in a private room. The dinner was a fabulous kaiseki style course with much of the menu from local vegetables, mushrooms and fresh water fish. There was a small museum just behind the ryokan with modern art and Korean antique porcelain, and an eclectic collection of several other paintings. The museum's owner is from the small mountain village and the owner of the famous 'Tenichi' tempura chain. A enjoyable museum worth the visit while going on a walk. The service was very good and appears the two main managers were husband/wife ensuring you feel welcomed and looked after. As we were getting ready to check out a gentleman from the ryokan was already out in the cold and snow, removing snow from our car windows.
