Named by American soldiers during the post-World War II occupation years, the Romantic Road is a 200-mile-plus section of one of Germany's most picturesque highways, stretching from Würzburg in Bavaria's north to Füssen near the Austrian border. Along the route are many favorite tourist towns and attractions, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Augsburg, and Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles. Bike tours along the route are quite popular, and bus tours are also available.

Set in the center of the historical town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the residence of the famous mayor Heinrich Toppler the "Goldene Greifen" - Golden Griffin - has always been a meeting point for societal life. Our house is listed and protected as a landmark - because of this none of our guest rooms are the same, but each one has its own unique charme.
We stayed here with our extended family. We occupied 2 rooms. One bigger room for a family of 4, and another room for a couple. The bigger room was huge! Both rooms were clean. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was satisfying.

Very welcoming host who gave loads of recommendations, and he even moved his own car, so we could park on his spot instead of in the street. The room was clean and well equipped, and although the bathroom was a little small is was very functional and had a nice shower.

For the price this was a very good place to stay in charming Rothenburg and I was happy that we had chosen a place inside the city gates instead of a hotel at the train station. The breakfast service at Pension Elke was great and the host went out of his way to make sure that we got all what we wanted and at the same time made sure to avoid the spread of virus by serving everything from the extensive buffet himself instead of letting guests get close and help themselves.

If you want to stay in the heart of old town, this is the place. Our room overlooked the main street. It was nice and had a great view. We spent one night here as we made our way from the Black Forest to Munich. The room - It was a very modern, average size room. Very clean. The hotel - Very clean. I am not sure when it was remolded, but it has very nice marble floors and stairs. The entrance was not directly on the street, but it was easy to find. The parking lot is a different story. I was not used to driving on the cobblestone streets and the parking lot is behind the hotel. It appears that you need to drive down a street that is pedestrian only. I ended up parking the car and walking to finally find the parking lot. Once I found the lot, it was pretty easy from there. If you have a car, I would highly recommend reserving a spot. If you don't, parking could be a big challenge. Everyone at the front desk was very nice. They all spoke English so that was a big help. They were friendly and was willing to provide advise and direction. One thing to note, they are not there overnight. So make sure you iron out any problems before they leave. We had no issues so this was not a big deal for us. Breakfast was included, and it was very good. Nice area with a lot of food provided. There was a gentlemen there cleaning up the dishes along with other constantly surveying the buffet and adding additional food. The location - As mentioned it is in the heart of the old city. You can walk everywhere - shops, restaurants and bars. This was the way to go for us. It was close to the castles but you would need some kind of transportation there. This was a very nice hotel....highly recommended.

The one night we spent at the Goldenes Lamm was memorable. We opted for a "premium" room that was spacious and had a very comfortable, Stressless-type easy chair. The room was very clean and warm, and centrally located near the center of old-Dinkelsbühl. Sustainability is achieved in many little ways, like the ordering of breakfast the night before on erasable menus that can be reused and live plants in the room. The Goldenes Lamm will be our go-to lodging choice when we return to this beautiful corner of Bavaria.
