10 Top-Rated Bed and Breakfast Inns in Nagano, Nagano Prefecture, Koshinetsu, Chubu

May 11, 2023 Alice Mieles

One of the main attractions in Nagano is Zenkō-ji, a colorful 7th-century Buddhist temple with proud architecture and a humbling presence. The compound contains lovely gardens, a treasure house, sacred statues and a massive incense burner. Kids will love the “ancient” appeal of the Chausuyama Dinosaur Park, adjacent to the Nagano Chausuyama Zoo. Test your stealth skills at the Chibikko Ninja Village, then reward your hard work with a tasting tour at the Nishi-no-Mon sake brewery.

Charming historical Ryokan! Exceptional hospitality!

My husband and I stayed one night at the Ryokan with the purpose to visit the a Togakushi Shrine. The location of the Ryokan is the closest to lowest shrine, Hokosha Shrine. Togakushi Kodo is actually a trail with 5 shrines and ponds. But, the most famous one is called ‘Okusha’ which is in the middle of the mountain. If you plan to visit just the Okusha, it is best to overnight around Chusha Shrine. But, for keen walkers, Oshi Ryokan is the best location to start the walk. Unfortunately, when I was there for a day, it had too much snow, and the walking trails were mostly closed. Only the short walk from Chusha to the Zuijinmon Gate was ok to walk. It was quite a distance from Oshi Ryokan. Mr Oshi-san was really kind and offered to drive us to Chusha. And, reminded us to be careful and, not go beyond the gate as the warning sign was in Japanese only. Mr Oshi-san speaks good English, and he told us history of the ryokan. The Ryokan granted is a bit worn, but it’s comfortable, and I slept very well. Food was very good. Booked half board at ¥21,600

Sorry, looks better than it looks

Gotta be honest, the pics are better than what it is. Location wise, i will consider it far from Nagano station and they have no shuttle from the nearest station. Taxi can take 10-15 minutes from Nagano. They could use a little renovation particularly on the reception lobby. The onsen’s nice though. Helps for the shy ones If you choose the one that has the indoor onsen.

Beautiful typical Japanese accommodation

We have just spent two nights at Matsuya Ryokan in Nagano. The location was amazing, just next to the Zenko-ji Temple. The rooms were nice sizes & we were made to feel so very welcome there. No request was too much of a problem for them when we asked for help with tour & taxi reservations. Everywhere was very clean & the food was beautifully prepared & delicious. We had the typical Japanese breakfast each day & also chose to eat dinner there one evening. We very much appreciated them preparing our Japanese beds too each evening & putting them away in the mornings. Highly recommended if you are staying in Nagano.

Friendly owners

We went to Togakushi out of season and it was pretty much deserted. We wanted to do some walks. We were the only people staying at the hostel and the couple that run the place are very helpful and kind. As no restaurants were open a couple of nights we were there, and they weren't cooking the owner let us use a little mobile cooking unit to make some pasta. The first night we were able to eat at the soba noodle restaurant on the corner of the same street. Our room had a heater and was of tradition layout with futons to sleep on. There is a small onsen (bath) which was old, but very nice to have as it was so cold. The walk to the upper shrine was completely sensational, we were lucky enough to have snow that day.

Charming old thatched-roof minshuku

Reviewed By Asterix135

The minshuku is set more or less at the crest of a very switchback-filled road, looking down over a valley. The main building has a thatched roof, and as you walk in the first thing you notice is the smoke coming out of the hearth where they are burning wood - not charcoal. I remember reading some book that said it was important to keep a smoky fire going in houses like this because the smoke keeps bugs from starting to attack the thatch. Our room was in the main (old) building. No entry way, nothing - just 12 mat size, right off the main hall and across from the lobby/dining area. Bathroom is down the hall, definitely old-style. And while the place seems big enough that it could be a ryokan, it’s definitely a minshuku. We had to lay out our futon, there wasn’t much in the way of help or explanation as we arrived, and the place is fairly small - at dinner it seemed like maybe 5 or so other groups were there, and the place was pretty much full. Dinner was a grill your own barbecue, with a couple of other dishes. While good, it was also a bit of work. Pork, chicken, fish, and veggies to grill along with sashimi, chawan-mushi, cold salted tempura, some stewed mountain vegetables and eggplant. All in all quite a good meal, and relatively filling. The local sake we got, though was just mediocre - tasting too much of alcohol and not really that smooth. The bath is also nice, not too hot, which was a good touch considering it’s summer.

Excellent Ryokan

Reviewed By Takafoto

We stayed here on a Friday night at the end of July. The Ryokan seems not very busy at that time; just several families were staying. Our room and all other public spaces looked being kept very clean and tidy. The Onsen wasn’t huge but simple, which is enough for me. The hot water was clear type. I also loved the cleanness here very much. The most impressive part of this Ryokan was the dinner. The town itself is in very deep mountain area though, the dinner was very sophisticated like the one available in Tokyo. One of the best Ryokans I have ever stayed. The breakfast was great too. Breakfast and dinner are inclusive as typical Ryokan.
