Santiago de Leon de Caracas, Venezuela's capital, sits in Cerro Avila Valley, where mountain ranges soar 8000 feet from the Caribbean. Once inhabited by Toromaimo Indians, the city was founded by the Spanish in 1567. Chacao is the see-and-be-seen place to eat, drink and socialize, but restaurant destination Las Mercedes is one of the few places safe to walk around. Iglesia de San Francisco is a beautiful example of colonial architecture. Mountainous Parque Nacional El Avila teems with tempting trails.

Nelson was one of the best people to come in contact with in Caracas. Although I came at one of the worst times yet in terms of the socio-economic situation, he still made a huge effort to help me out and give me good advice. Although I didn't stay at his place, he was one of my main 'guides' or 'hosts' during my time there. He recommended reliable accommodation in Los Palos Grandes. His advice was sound, reliable and ensured safety whilst at the same time helped me get the most out of a visit to a country in such a state. He also put me in contact with other people who helped me get a good picture of the place. Even though everyone will tell you to stay away from Venezuela - and there is a lot of wisdom in that - a lot of people say in ignorance of what is really possible if you go as carefully as possible and take appropriate precautions and carry yourself appropriately. It's a big learning experience and also very humbling in multiple ways. One thing that people often say that I can confirm is that it's all about who you know in Venezuela. If you have some good local contacts such as Nelson a trip to the country is certainly doable.

Galipan its a lovely and peaceful place located in the North Face of the Avila National Park. In this mountain the "Hotel La Hacienda Vieja" is a great place to stay with your significant other or friends. The place is almost 45 mins from Caracas, and is very safe to stay. I was there invited for a wedding party, and they do a remarkable good job organizing the logistics, the wedding including the food was excelent! The rooms are comfortables and prepared for the mountain fresh weather (like 10 Celcius degrees at nights), and are very clean, they had hot water TV, and some of them has wifi access. But, at the morning the reward for the hard road trip, is the amazing sightseeing of the Caribbean sea! Finally, local breakfast are delicious, they had a nice hot sauce there!

The guided tour was absolutely amazing and incredibly worthwhile. I have much to thank our tour guide for being responsible for this memory I will cherish. The amenities and areas visited made me feel like I was living the grand opening of the hotel for the first time. Very well preserved original pieces and a beautiful story surrounding one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. The tour was most enjoyable with a very natural conversational pitch that kept us engaged throughout the visit. The views are one of a kind, and being able to experience sundown on top of the city was an unmatched experience. Much thanks to the hotel personnel for their hospitality and exceptional customer treatment.

We Stayed for over two months and found it good enough for a long term stay. Personnel was kind and eager to help us, sometimes it took some hours to get back to us but in general they were receptive of our needs (we had a toddler). Food was not great, they could add some variety, particularly if you end up eating there almost very day. Breakfasts became boring on the second week. Clean, good location, park for kids next door.

CASA INFINITO, it’s a pleasant and comfortable hotel; it is located in a quiet residential area of Caracas, Alta Florida, near the entrance of the principal highway and the most interesting tourist, commercial and finance area. For everybody want enjoy themselves and live a unique experience, in the heart of a modern and exiting metropolis.

I called the place 3 weeks in advance to learn the details, prices, how to pay, etc. Seven days before the established travel date, I called to make the reservation and request transportation (galipan is on a mountain and you can't reach it by regular car). I also asked for the number of the account to make the deposit. 2 days later I called to confirm I made the deposit and some guy answered the phone confirming the reservation for room number 2. The day we were supposed to go, I called 45 minutes before the agreed time to confirm I was going to meet the transport guy. To my surprise Teresa told me we were not booked for the room I specifically asked for. However she managed to accomodate us in another room. Then the transportation issue started. We waited until 1:30 (agreed time) and i called her. She told me the person who was supposed to pick me up was complicated, but she was sending her son...that of course would not arrive at agreed time. We waited until 2. At 2:10 we called Norma again. And then she told us his son's car broke and she was trying to find us someone else. At 2:40 we finally met the guy who was supposed to take us to the hotel. We had to wait for another family, but I though at least the price would have been split by 5 instead of us 2 (that didn't happen of course) By the time we got to la posada I was already a little upset. We were greeted by Teresa and another man, Octavio, a very nice person. He took us to the room recently assigned. This room had one queen bed, a sofa and a ladder to the upper level where there were only small matresses on the improvised wooden floor (never cleaned before and full of spider webs). The bathroom gave the impression it had never been cleaned before, with holes in the walls and ceiling that clearly indicated any insect could crawl in. Dinner was ok. Only one option for drink and eat, but it tasted good. Sleeping was terrible because right next to the room, there was what I think was Teresa's room. Someone was playing salsa till very late... The next morning we had breakfast and requested the returning transportation at 3:00 pm. Obviously we waited a lot. At 5:40 pm (only 2 hours and a half of delay) the car that was driving us back, finally arrived. Even though Octavio was a very nice gentlemen, I would not recommend this place.
