One of Japan's most-visited hot springs resorts, the hilly city of Beppu is often blanketed in steam, providing a clue to its enduring appeal. It's unabashedly touristic, but sinking into a steaming thermal pool offers an appealing way to escape the crowds.

We stayed one night in this modern hotel with onsen in the center of Beppu. It’s located five minutes away from the Beppu JR Station. Although its location is in the city center it’s very quiet without any noise from traffic outside. The hotel is beautifully decorated with bamboo theme which is a special product of Beppu. The lobby area looks stunning overlooking a beautiful garden. The whole hotel is floored with bamboo tatami which I think is very special. Footwear is not allowed in the hotel. The moment we entered the front door we were asked to remove our shoes. They even cleaned the wheels of the luggage. We took two rooms for four of us. The room is very spacious with separate toilet and a big bathroom. Amenities included a kettle for coffee and tea making and a capsule coffee machine. The free yuzu drink in the refrigerator tasted delicious. The complimentary traditional steamed buns with yuzu at the lobby with tea and coffee was a nice touch. Guests are given socks and a pair of loose fitting pyjamas outfit instead of traditional yukata. The onsen area is bright and modern. There’s an indoor and outdoor baths. The dinner and breakfast were great and plentiful. Most of the staff can converse in English. The reason I did not give a five star rating is because our room on second floor has an unpleasant sewage smell which I didn’t detect when we check-in. The odour was pretty bad at night. It could be due to second floor is next to the in-house restaurant. Overall we did enjoy our stay. I would recommend this hotel.

Nearby landmarks such as Geothermal Tourism Lab Enma (1.4 mi) and Jigokumushikobo Kannawa (1.5 mi) make Gahama Terrace a great place to stay when visiting Beppu. Rooms at Gahama Terrace provide a flat screen TV, air conditioning, and a refrigerator, and guests can stay connected with free wifi. In addition, while staying at Gahama Terrace guests have access to baggage storage. You can also enjoy breakfast. Need a place to park? Free parking is available at Gahama Terrace. Best of all, Gahama Terrace makes it easy to experience many great Beppu attractions like Statue of Kumahachi Aburaya and Yayoi Tengu, which are some popular monuments and statues. The staff at Gahama Terrace looks forward to serving you during your upcoming visit.
We stayed one night as a family of 4 in a Seaside Maisonette. I didn’t realize this when booking, but it has 2 bedrooms, both with two double beds (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs) and 2 toilet rooms. We loved the outdoor bathroom and two hot spring onsens. The rooms were clean, updated, and nice toiletries were provided. They also provided kimonos and sandals to relax around the resort. Parking is free and valet parking is provided when you check in as well as luggage service. Staff speaks minimal English but it did not negatively impact our stay. My only two negative comments are the uncomfortable beds and flat pillows (bring your own) and it was very hot in our room. I wish the A/C worked a little better. We loved how kid friendly they were. Children’s kimonos, sandals and slippers were provided as well as a kid’s welcome kit. My kids loved the private onsen and looking for crabs on the resort grounds. There was one restaurant on site but it didn’t look like it was open. The sister resort on the other side of Nitori is where breakfast and dinner are served. It’s a short walk but they do have a shuttle. Breakfast was delicious! Buffet style with a western and Japanese side, once again, very kid friendly! The service was fantastic overall and in every aspect of our stay! I wish we could have stayed longer.

Kannawaen is a hybrid hotel/ryokan luxury property that's centrally located and close to just about everything worth visiting in Beppu. Beppu is a renowned Onsen area, but is somewhat lacking in true top-end luxury properties. Kannawaen fits the bill for the most part, although it does not distinguish itself among the numerous luxury ryokans in other parts of Japan. Although it's in the middle of town, Kannawaen provides a secluded environment by featuring gardens with ponds, a teahouse, several buildings and even a Noh stage where performances are periodically held (although, sadly, not during our stay... most likely due to COVID-19.) It's a relatively expansive property given its location - it only features 30 rooms, although it appears suitable as a mega resort if it tried to be one. As with any top property, Kannawaen provides private Onsen baths in each room, in addition to having communal indoor and outdoor Onsens. Our room had a very nice open-air outdoor bath as well as an indoor wooden bath. It even featured an Onsen steam sauna, which was a nice bonus. Unfortunately, Kannawaen fell flat in several areas. We received a call from the manager just 2 days before our scheduled arrival, and he informed us that the room we booked (the top room called "Sora") was being renovated, so it was not going to be available to us. This was a big bummer. Sora is on the top floor and offers panoramic views of Beppu city, the surrounding mountains as well as the Ocean. Additionally, it's the only room where in-room dining is possible; all other guests are required to have their meals in the main restaurant. We were to be moved to a villa-style room called "Ume," which, while nice, wasn't the same. It was a stand-alone structure that was separate from the main building, and was a very spacious room with a nice outdoor bath, but was lacking of any view whatsoever. Also, I had to be very firm in our insistence of being served meals in our room, to which they begrudgingly obliged. To me, it was strange that they didn't offer in-room dining in the first place - especially in a room the caliber of Ume, since it wasn't that far away from the kitchen. If other ryokans can do it, Kannawaen ought to offer it as an option to more of their room categories. Aside from Kaiseki fare, Teppanyaki is also an option, although we chose not to try it out due to our desire to have adequate social distancing. Our Ume room was decent. it was cavernous in size, and the bath was nice. But decor was a bit odd and outdated; it was a mixture of traditional Japanese and 80s Western in furnishings. And, while they claimed the room was last renovated in 2016, it appeared more worn out than that. It wasn't particularly ratty, but was not shiny and new, either. Other issues - It took several calls to the front desk to get WiFi properly working, and even then, speeds were barely suitable for streaming Netflix shows. And, hot water was sporadic in both the shower and sinks, and took several trips by maintenance staff to fix the problem. Given that we were only there for 2 nights, this type of hassle was not exactly convenient. On the plus side - the staff seemed to care, including Mr. Sato, the manager. They really try their best, and mean well. Mr. Iwamoto, our designated in-room dinner server, was very passionate and knowledgeable, and did a great job explaining every dish in great detail; we really enjoyed his company throughout our time there. Food was very good. It wasn't particularly memorable, but take what I say with a grain of salt. We've had the opportunity of staying at some of the very best ryokans Japan has to offer, and while it doesn't crack the top 10, I would still consider it as a highlight. Overall, all of the problems we experienced were first-world issues. That said, the room rates are very high at Kannawaen (especially their top rooms) - we expected a bit more than what we actually got. It didn't help that our stay at Kannawaen was preceded by an amazing experience at Takefue ryokan, which we consider to be the #1 luxury ryokan property in all of Japan.

I stayed here with my Japanese wife for 1 night. We booked 1 room with the onsen bath and even if the room was relatively small we were quite impressed. But the first problem popped up in less than 30 minutes. From the shower room a long and incredibly loud “flushed-water” noise transformed the atmosphere of the room in a big toilet. And it wasn’t even us! It was from the rooms next to ours, that how it was explained by the kind staff member, were all connected by the pipelines. We explained that we couldn’t stay there, as if it happened at night we wouldn’t be able to sleep. They agreed to change our room, so the problem was solved. Then we went to dinner, and here was the second problem. While eating some vegetables my wife risked to swallow a freaking piece of plastic, coming from the wrapping they used for the vegetables (see pic). Better not to think what would have happened if it was served to a child. After complaining, another staff member came to apologize. Upon check out, they agreed to waive the fees for the drinks (around 2000JPY), but for 22,000JPY per person, this service was unacceptable to say the least.

I personally loved it here and actually stayed one night longer than I intended. Service: so kind and homely. The staff are smiling and eager to help you with anything. The breakfast is very very nice and totally worth the 1000yen. I planned a hike one morning and so asked for a Bento breakfast which they made for me. It was also delicious. Building: is quite old, so yes, the floor creaks and makes noise. The walls are thin, so yes, noise carries. I think it adds to the charm of the place. I will admit that the toilets are a little awkwardly set up outside the rooms and probably not so sound insulated, but I was one of the only customers during my stay so that didn't really matter to me. Onsen: there are two- an open air onsen that you can reserve for private use during its open hours (which is most of the day) and an inside one which I think is open all the time. The towels have a lovely smell to them and I really really loved the outdoor bath. It must be incredible to be there as a couple or as a family Overall: I highly recommend it! If you want something with luxury or great privacy don't come here. If you want an authentic Japanese old style ryokan, then definitely check it out.

I have stayed many Onsen Ryokans in Japan. This is one of the best Onsen Ryokan. The panorama Ocean View was much more beautiful than I expected. This hotel is not so large that I could spend time quietly and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Both dinner and breakfast were good. Especially, Bungo beef dinner was fairy tasty. According to a staff, the owner run also a stock farm. The staff was kind and very attentive. I would like to stay here again.

5 minute drive from one of the hell onsens. My daughter loved the collection of yukatas from which guests can choose one they like. Room was spacious. Smells of tatami but understandable. TV has only five channels and they were all japanese but this goes the same for all the other hotels I stayed in fukuoka area. This hotel has a lounge on the first floor and it's more like a family place rather than being a bar. it has a variety of board games and guests staying here can freely use this games wearing yukatas. Japanese style breakfast was great. I use their onsen two times n spent such a relaxing time. Small but clean and nice. Has a little outdoor onsen which would fit about 4 people. Staff was kind and friendly. I especially asked for help to the one speaking english well and he went out of his way to give me the information i needed.
